Ok, so who has done this?? We live in a 2 bedroom apartment so we don't have too much to do but now that Libby is crawling everywhere and getting into everything, since she loves to pull up to standing on anything (coffee table, chairs, ottomans, sofa, exersaucer, magazine basket, etc. you get the idea) oh and she "cruises" a little bit too!!!!!!!i have got to start babyproofing. I already put those protective things on the outlets but i'm concerned about our end tables. they are lightweight and both have a lamp on them. i worry she could tip them over and the lamp would fall. not sure how to prevent that one from happening. i also have to get those child locks for our lower cabinets and drawers... and we have these cushions/pads on our dining room chairs and she has proceeded to untie the bows. do i have to completely remove them??? tha twould be annoying, but obviously i don't want them to be a strangulation hazard. apparently you can hire someone in our town to tell you want you need to do to babyproof but i'm sure i can figure it out on my own w/o paying someone. something tells me she will be walking soon. i guess i'll follow megan's progress b/c she seems to do things a few weeks after she does. i'm so not ready for this!!!gaah.gif ...

When we moved here the boys were 2 and almost 4 so I didn't do too much Baby Proofing. But this week, I will be. I cannot keep little miss on the rug or her blanket anymore. Yesterday I layed ger on a big blanket on the rug in the living room While I was just around the corner in the bathroom drying my hair. I turned off the dryer to peak at her and she had rolled clear across the room and under the dining room table. There is no stopping her anymore. ...

I removed the wastebasket, the toilet paper holder, and the plunger. I placed a blanket with toys on the floor, and I ensured there was nothing she could get into. Well, she showed me. Mid-shower I peered from around the curtain to see that she had the cap to the toilet bolt [...] ...

So, we are getting really brave this weekend. Or at least I feel like I am. We’re planning to spend the weekend on our boat, Buster, with our boy Willie. I’m having heartburn over this already. Some might remember that we actually stayed on a houseboat for an entire week with Willie this past winter. But our boat is different. It’s the sleeping set up that’s really getting me worried. On the houseboat, we had space for his portable Pack n’Play in a separate "room" down below on the boat. I usually ended up getting him to sleep next to me while reading books on the bed and then moved him to the Pack n’Play. Well, since then, he refuses to sleep in that thing. And he is two, a big boy now. I’m planning to keep him in his crib at home as long as I can, which translates to, until he manages to crawl out of the crib. read more ...

When will my Baby start walking? That was a question that I had a few months ago. Seeing him cruise along the furniture and the walls was pretty impressive. Then seeing him let go and trying to balance was awesome. But then when he took his first step - our jaws just fell to the [...] ...

Watching your kid fall has to be the worst thing for a parent. That was me this week, as my 9-month-old tumbled off the couch head first. All I saw were his feet as he went overboard. Rowan was fine, but the image of those feet keeps playing in my mind. So it got me thinking about falls. My father still has nightmares about the time my sister fell down the stairs. I have a friend who talks about the time she jerked backwards in her high chair and landed flat on her head. (The only thing it hurt, she jokes, was her math skills.) And I can’t even count the times I fell as a kid. What do you do to avoid falls? We don’t, I’ll be honest, do much Baby- or toddler-Proofing of the house. My philosophy has been that they should learn to function safely in the space we have. Maybe that’s misguided. We cover the electrical outlets but we don’t block off rooms to the kids (ages 2 and 9 months). What has worked for you? ...

Before your child begins to walk is the time to start Baby Proofing your home. Babies and toddlers learn by touching and by putting things in their little mouths, so making sure that their environment is safe from hazards is important. Here are some basic guidelines for Baby Proofing your ... ...

I was trying to channel one of the greatest humor columnists on the planet, Dave Barry. When my 9-year-old twins were mere tots, I wrote a column mocking pediatric safety mania that had managed to cloud the minds of well-meaning parents. The propaganda was making them fearful that around every corner of their home, danger lurked for small children if the adults didn't implement every single safety recommendation to ward against any possible mishap, no matter how remote. This safety insanity - arguing that TVs, shelves and unbolted dressers would crush children, toilets would drown, family beds would suffocate - was making me think that perhaps we'd lost our grip on common sense and couldn't figure out how to make our homes safe. So I opted to poke fun at the big, scary articles urging us to bubble-wrap our children when they're in their very own homes by suggesting it would be a mark of unconscionable selfishness if parents didn't shell out major buckaroos to hire what I dubbed a "pediatric body guard/child-Proofing safety service." Woo-hoo! What a kick it was for me to concoct a nonsensical company. Then I read Pamela Paul's new book, "Parenting, Inc." and learned that, nearly a decade later, my satirical example is no longer a joke. There are now Baby Proofing consultants for hire. When I read that, I realized that modern parenthood has now officially veered into a place I call Stupidville, where smart people think that some random p ...

Wow! This sounds great...if I only had more discretionary money to spend... There are some companies cropping up that claim to be "full service Baby planning for moms-to be", and they do everything from researching to Baby-Proofing to helping decorate the nursery: anything that a pregnant woman might need a hand with to prepare for her Baby. They even help with gift registries, etiquette for Baby showers, and can help with doctor referrals. The Baby planners are compared to wedding planners, which have become more popular. What do you think about this idea? Would you use this service, or recommend it to a friend? (I have to share this: one company's motto that is funny/clever: "Enjoy your pregnancy...let us do the labor".) ...

If you've recently been through the process of Baby-Proofing your house and placing all sharp implements out of your toddler's reach, you may boggle slightly at the concept of Corvus - real tools for children. Tools that include saws, pincers and drills. Obviously, these are for the slightly older child, and presumably to be used under strict adult supervision. I guess the premise is that with real tools, you can teach your children techniques that will be genuinely useful throughout their lives. Suddenly I'm looking at all those plastic, impractical toy tool-sets with a very jaundiced eye. ...

At six months pregnant, I was introduced to the strange and often conflicted world of child-Proofing. Walking into the toddler-inhabited home of a dear friend, we were accosted by no fewer than six Baby gates, barring approach to the TV, the DVD racks, the staircases, the kitchen hall and the end tables. The toddler’s mommy [...] ...
