Just over twelve months ago, BURMA's Buddhist monks took to the streets in what became known as the saffron rebellion, a protest against the ruling military junta. The crackdown that followed saw violent raids on monasteries, and hundreds imprisoned. Eight months later CYCLONE Nargis hit, killing an estimated 85,000 people and creating a humanitarian crisis which BURMA is still trying to come to terms with. ...

An international cast of writers celebrated the work of persecuted Burmese authors last night at Cooper Union. The audience included exiled monks, United Nations dignitaries, and scores of readers--raising $13,500 for Burmese charities. The "Reading BURMA: A Benefit for CYCLONE Relief and Freedom of Expression in BURMA/Myanmar" line-up included authors Kiran Desai, Siri Hustvedt, and Joseph Lelyveld. All the readers focused on BURMA's dark, strange contradictions: how governmental "scrutiny board" censored six out of nine articles in a national newspaper (axing articles about protests but keeping a fluffy profile of J. K. Rowling); or how an official dispatch urged starving citizens to eat frogs. In that first picture, New Yorker writer George Packer and the Venerable U Gawsita discussed the violently suppressed uprising in BURMA last year. Packer recently wrote a fascinating article about BURMA for the New Yorker . continued... New Career Opportunities Daily: The best jobs in media ...

Burmese poet U Win Tin , a frail 76-year-old man jailed by his own government for nearly 20 years for the criminal act of writing, was released from prison yesterday. An international cast of writers celebrated his release at the PEN American Center's Reading BURMA benefit last night. The event raised $13,500 in donations, all of which will be donated to CYCLONE relief and freedom of expression advocates in BURMA/Myanmar. (Photos to follow later today) A former United Nations envoy to Myanmar read one of Tin's poems out-loud, words that the poet had scratched into the dust in his 6-foot by 3-foot cell--the UN official read the words that Tin was forbidden to write: "As long as democracy and human rights are not written, read / I decline my release." We have launched Google Map Maker in Haiti and Cuba in order to help relief efforts in the wake of recent natural disasters, including Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. These maps and data are urgently needed by U.N. agencies such as the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) and many other responding organizations as they navigate the complicated logistics of delivering food and supplies to the region. For those who are familiar with Haiti or Cuba and want to lend a helping hand, we urge you to help map these countries. Our Google Map Maker engineering and operations teams are also contributing to this effort, and hope to make available quality maps of Haiti and Cuba to help in planning and delivering relief to the affected population. When CYCLONE Nargis hit the Irrawaddy delta in Myanmar (BURMA) earlier this year, we mobilized a similar effort with our teams to put together a Mapplet within a week. In addition, users can also help map the Caribbean Islands, several of which were affected by the recent disasters. A list of countries where Google Map Maker is launched is available here . For a quick tutorial on Google Map Maker, watch the video below or refer to our help pages for more information. Lalitesh Katragadda, Software Engineer and Jessica Pfund, GIS Specialist ...

By Prof. Kanbawza Win Are we (the ethno-democratic forces) in the doldrums, now that Mr.Gambari mission has utterly failed? If so what should be our strategy and to plot this we have to analyse it and tap on the plausible strategy. Many people were outraged at the Saffron Revolution and the slow response to CYCLONE Nargis and want to punish the Generals by bringing them to International Criminal Court, in The Hague; others want more sanctions and want BURMA to be expelled from ASEAN. Some group work for BURMA to be expelled from the UN. Others opted for UN and US intervention. But what is our target and how do we react? We have to think how to change the status quo. Will taking them to court compel the Generals to give up power? No, they will become more determine? Will more sanction make them yield or hurt the people of BURMA more? Two decades have proves otherwise. read more ...

Rohingya refugee camp It is not often you meet someone who tells you that he is from “a people at the brink of extermination.” But the testimonies from refugees in a remote corner of southern Bangladesh, on the border with BURMA, justify that assessment. For the Rohingya people, a Muslim minority in northern Arakan State, western BURMA, are a stateless people whose very identity is denied. All the people of BURMA are suffering at the hands of one of the world’s most brutal, and illegitimate, military regimes. From time to time BURMA’s crisis hits the headlines, as it did with protests led by Buddhist monks last September, and CYCLONE Nargis in May this year. In between such events, however, BURMA fades from the world’s attention. If BURMA as a whole is under-reported, the people on its western borders are almost unknown to the world. Journalists, activists and aid agencies who visit the region tend to head for the Thailand-BURMA border, where access to refugees, displaced people and democracy groups is greatest.
