Few would argue with the environmental and economic benefits of hybrid vehicles, but despite an avalanche of concept cars that utilize either hybrid or fully-electric drivetrains in recent times, the cost of actually buying one of the few models that have thus far made it to market remains prohibitively high. This situation is set to change rapidly over the next five years and Honda has fired one of the first shots in the expected hybrid price war with the unveiling of its new gasoline-electric Insight at the Paris Motor Show. The 'affordable family hybrid concept' is expected to be very close to the production version slated to hit the U.S. market next year at a price of under $20K, nudging out the Toyota Prius (around USD$23K) as the cheapest hybrid on the market... September 5, 2008 We’d been looking at pictures and static displays of Subaru’s horizontally-opposed diesel engine for several years before seeing it in the Legacy and Outback earlier this year. The engine is exceptionally compact, very light and has a low centre-of-gravity which benefits handling agility and makes best use of the all-wheel drive system. Throw in gobs of torque (the 2.0 litre version produces 258 lb ft at 1,800 rpm), class-leading fuel economy and emissions and the refinement, smoothness and sharp throttle-response it has already displayed and it makes the coming Forester Boxer Diesel which goes on sale in later this month and the Impreza Boxer Diesel (January 2009) very enticing indeed. The Forester will be unveiled in Paris next week... Worlds of Fun will up the adrenaline ante next summer with a new wooden roller coaster thrill ride — the Prowler. The 85-foot first drop will include a spiraling turn before the ride’s 24-passenger train builds speeds up to 51 mph along a terrain-hugging, 3,074-foot track that will whoosh riders through a rugged wooded area adjoining the park’s Africa section. “You’re under tree cover the entire time,” park spokesman Brandon Stanley told an estimated 200 employees and season-pass holders Monday. They were invited to the formal announcement of the 35-year old amusement park’s new $8 million ride that included a virtual “ride” on the thing. Jeff Mast, a park employee and publisher of Theme Parks Magazine, said Prowler manufacturer Great Coasters International Inc., Sunbury, Pa., is regarded as the “BMW of coaster builders.” Mast said the Prowler is expected to be state of art in providing a smooth ride that offers plenty of fast and sharp turns, but not so jarring. “It’s more like a bob sled,” he said. ...

Just as we recently wrote about the new BMW 7-Series, the midlife fifth-generation 3-Series also makes its first impressions with its exterior and passenger cabin. What’s different in the case of the E90 3-Series four-door is that the all-new version introduced in 2005 has been an enthusiast favorite, whereas the 7-Series has received little else but sharp ridicule for its exterior design and the horrid earlier versions of the iDrive system, since going on sale in 2000. All we can think of to criticize the E90, in fact, is the mainstream pinched look of the tail end, because so far as driving dynamics go, the 3-Series never displeases with class-best handling and ride characteristics. Close to half of all BMW production is made up of 3-Series models, and the Audi A4 and Mercedes C-Class (not to mention any Japanese competitor) have spent their entire lives trying to keep up. Just as the newest C-Class seemed to catch the 3-Series, however, now we get this new 3 to keep the premium Bimmer on top of the pile. At the start of 2009 after January’s North American International Auto Show in Detroit, BMW introduces its diesel initiative to the North American market with the 335d. At the time of its announcement several months back this move was a little surprising, since we only expected the X5 to come with the 35d motor. Well, times in the U.S. market have changed drastically for the worse and now the 335d almost doesn’t seem to be stro ...

Hot on the heels of the Ottawa International Animation Festival, the Cinematheque quebecoise is offering a festival highlight in Montreal. Jonas Odell's retrospective, Revolver Bang! Bang! will be shown on September 24th, and it repeats on September 26. I've provided a loose translation of Marco de Blois's description on the CQ website. In 1981 in Stockholm, three students who loved illustration and animation formed a studio they named Filmtecknarna . Initially, Jonas Odell, Lars Ohlson and Stig Bergqvist dedicated their activities to production and direction of short auteur films. But a few years later, a new opportunity presented itself for the directors. Private television stations in Sweden had a demand for content that the studio worked to satisfy. Therefore, the founders threw themselves into the direction of television animation, commercials and music videos, as well as returning periodically to short films. Imprinting an incomparable stylistic cohesiveness to their productions, Filmtecknarna attained International reknown. When one has clients, for example, like Ikea, BMW, U2 and Franz Ferdinand, one can meaningfully consider one's notoriety. Another key moment in Filmtecknarna's history occurred in 1993 when festivals the world over attacked by an unidentified object, Revolver , which brought together the three founders and Martti Ekstrand. Even today it exerts a fascination the holds the spectator: this strange black and ...

More than half the cars sold in Europe are high-mpg diesels. So given the opportunity to sample four models directly from the Continent, we hoped to find out if modern European diesels are good enough to entice American drivers. Small-displacement engines with big torque and fuel economy numbers have long been considered forbidden fruit to the U.S. market. With the revised, ultra-low-sulfur fuel recently adopted in the States, we are seeing a slow influx of European diesel models reach our shores. Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen have lead this wave of new diesels, and several other automakers have announced plans to bring more here. So, what do we have to look forward to? We got a taste last week by attending the annual International Motor Press Association (IMPA) track days at Pocono Raceway, where we piloted several imported diesel models provided by Bosch. We sampled four European-market diesel models: 2009 Audi A4 3.0 TDI Quattro, 2007 BMW 123d hatchback, 2007 Chrysler 300D, and 2008 Mini Cooper D. (Bosch supplies some of the fuel injection and emissions control equipment for these cars that allow them to meet stringent air quality standards in Europe. They say the cars could also be made 50-state compliant in the U.S.) In our review of the Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec diesel last year, we raved that its modern diesel engine was not only clean, but also felt as smooth and powerful as a gasoline engine. (Watch our video road test.) ...

Since the dawn of the stoplight, drivers have been challenging one another for automotive bragging rights. Just as the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang have been pitted against one another since the mid-1960s, the last decade has given rise to more International rivalries, due in some part to the advent of PlayStation and the Gran Turismo video game franchise. These games are heavily credited for inspiring Mitsubishi and Subaru to bring over their World Rally Championship-focused Lancer Evolution and WRX turbocharged, all-wheel-drive cars to the United States. The wild-winged, previous-generation cars took the video game competition to the street bragging rights, creating a legion of loyal enthusiasts. When the redesigned models were introduced, we had to stage our own showdown. In the October issue, we rounded up several sporty cars, ranging from the affordable Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec V to the premium BMW 135i. In the mix were the Evolution and WRX STi. We have treated them all to traditional standalone road tests (available to online subscribers) and videos, though we couldn’t resist pitting the rally twins against each other in this bonus video. Resident hot-shoe and expert race driver, Senior Auto Engineer Jake Fisher puts the pair to the ultimate shoot-out around our test track, offering running commentary. The lap times and even the footage compare their speed around the track. Watch our video to see which car wins, or cli ...
