Clip Source: www.pbs.org Veteran journalist William Greider on the current financial crisis and what he calls "the great deflation of Wall Street." Clip Source: www.pbs.org BILL MOYERS: With me now is one of America's leading chroniclers of money, power, and politics, who says what's happening is the disgrace of Wall Street, its excesses paid for by people like those in Cleveland and millions like them around the country. WILLIAM GREIDER: Usury, to be clear about it, is rich people taking advantage of poor people by lending them money on terms that are sure to make them fail. All three of the great religions, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, had a moral prohibition against usury because they recognized that society can't function like that. People of great wealth and their institutions like banks naturally have the power to overwhelm people of lesser means. And you can't allow that in a decent society. It won't survive. PBS - Aug. 16 (Special Report) - I think there's a tendency on the part of policy makers and probably a tendency on the part of many Americans to think that the problems we face are problems that are out there somewhere, beyond our borders. And that if we can fix those problems, then we'll be able to continue the American way of life as it has long existed. I think it's fundamentally wrong. Our major problems are at home. Back in February, the Charlotte Observer published a shocking six-part series on the human suffering involved in producing cheap chicken. “The Cruelest Cuts” package looked at typical working conditions at a poultry plant, the makeup of the workforce, the sorry state of government oversight, and how the companies stay below regulatory radar. A BILL MOYERS Essay on the eventual influence of oil on American foreign policy. Tracing back several years before the war, he argues that without Iraq’s abundant oil supply, there would have been very less enthusiasm for the invasion. I’m not usually a big fan of conservatives and conservatism but a recent episode of the BILL MOYERS JOURNAL that featured two guests speaking about the state of the American conservative movement in 2008 really got my attention and I found to be educational and fascinating. Guests Mickey Edwards and Russ Douthat provide frank, penetrating [...] ... Source: dylanhorrocks.vox.com --- 19 hours ago

We modern Americans are marvels of indolence. We'll slap magnetic "Support our troops" ribbons on our minivans and surrender our freedoms to telephone companies if that's what it takes to keep from having to protect our freedoms, but let anyone even suggest keeping our tires properly inflated and suddenly that sacred line between abstract consent and literal effort has been crossed and we are downright indignant. You would think we would be doomed with an attitude like this, and you would be right. On Friday, the same day I had been thinking that I wanted more and better TV on my computer, I ran across a posting at Lifehacker about Miro , an iTunesy kind of video player that also downloads fresh video content for you as it becomes available. The first thing I downloaded with it was Friday's installment of BILL MOYERS JOURNAL , a favorite PBS interview show. ... Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- 1 day ago
If I wasn't certain it would be like pounding sand down a rat hole, I would be taking out full page ads to tell the world I saw the man who should be the the Vice Presidential running mate for either Barack Obama or John McCain. For John McCain because he calls himself a conservative. For Barack Obama because he said that in '06, despite his conservative credentials, he voted for Democrats who promised to end a war he had long seen as futile. For Barack Obama and John McCain because in this one-hour interview on BILL MOYERS JOURNAL (Friday, August 15 on your PBS station), Andrew J. Bacevich , graduate of West Point, 23-year Army veteran and retired Colonel, now an author and professor of history at Boston University, stood up with more strength, more historic context, and more clarity than any Democrat or Republican in the house or senate on all the front-burner issues. The hour is up here somewhere, perhaps everywhere. If it isn't, please you who know more about getting around in cyberspace, see to it. I know you will want to. ... Sometimes there is an interview, an interviewee, and an interviewer that brings it all so tightly into focus. This is one of those moments. BILL MOYERS -- who I've celebrated on this site before -- caught up with Boston University Professor of International Relations Andrew J. Bacevich, on a recent broadcast of BILL MOYERS JOURNAL . I won't spend too much time dissecting Bacevich's eloquent and brilliant critique of American foreign policy, all of which is found in his book The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism . I just implore you to at least do what I did and watch the two-part interview . Before any right or left knee-jerking ensues, note that Bacevich takes both political camps to task (questioning whether either Obama or McCain, for example, will bring substantive change to America's geopolitical center of gravity. The short answer: No). And he has a stinging indictment of the self-serving Democratic leadership of Pelosi and Reid. He asks all Americans to take a look at themselves, from support of the troops (beyond flag pins) to energy conservation. He draws clear lines of accountability from the general public directly to the halls of power. Bacevich never let's you easily and conveniently point the finger at rogue political leaders, showing them as part of the continuum that includes the American citizen. And, offered up almost reluctantly, you learn of Bacevich's real life tragedy: the loss of his son, a ... Find more results for BILL MOYERS JOURNAL on RSSMicro.com |
