You know, after 10 years of writing articles for newspapers, magazines and online newsletters, I'm finding it rather tricky to navigate this new writing world I find myself in now. Now it's all about crafting text that will hopefully score big with search engine optimization (SEO) by targeting keywords and placing those keywords strategically within the text and in specific Web page design elements. It really is a whole different writing discipline requiring a whole new way of thinking. The narrative approach of traditional journalism outlets that I've grown accustomed to is being retooled by this SEO content targeting model. I'm having my own difficulties learning this new writing style, but I'm adaptable, and for the most part the SEO format and rules pretty much make sense. Also, if the people around me are to be believed, the ability to write successful SEO content is a seriously valuable job skill, so there's that, which is nice if it's true. But if SEO is the wave of the long term future, traditional online news outlets have a LOOOOOONGGGGGGG ways to go to even think about catching up.... ... Ok, here's the riddle... Option A: Used 2008 Specialized Tarmac SL2. $2500. Upside: It's an $8000 BIKE for cheap. Downside: No warranty for the 2nd owner (and Specialized bikes seem to break a lot). Random: The current owner sprinted on it to a national championship recently. Option B: New 2009 Specialized Tarmac SL through my racing team's deal: $2700. Upside: It's a $5000 BIKE for cheap. Full warranty. Downside: It's not quite the BIKE that the SL2 is. Assume equal/equivalent parts and wheelz and whatnot. Actully, the used BIKE might have somewhat better wheelz. Students from seven Utica schools cheered on about 60 BIKE riders Friday as they rode through the city to encourage healthy living. The riders — including teachers, parents and community leaders — rode 11.2 miles from Thomas Jefferson Elementary School to Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School. The path also took them by other schools. Children had signs encouraging the riders, and King students even performed a rap song. This was the fifth year for the ride. “We just wanted to take a morning for the district to recognize being healthy and physically active and being in a good state of mind,” event coordinator and King physical education teacher Kristen Lutz said. Students had a shorter route to ride, joining the group for the last mile between Watson Williams Elementary School and King. “It was fun, but short,” Hugh R. Jones Elementary School fifth-grader Dominic Facciolo said. King third-grader Courtney Andrews said the ride was easy, especially compared to last year’s. “Last year, it was horrible,” Andrews said. “It rained the whole time. This year was a lot more fun.” Martin Nemecek, district director of physical education and athletics, said he enjoyed the ride. “All but that hill up Hughes,” he joked. “Next year, let’s go down it.” New Hartford resident Bruce Iffert also joined the ride, wanting to encourage children to ride their bikes. “I think it’s great fun and hope more kids can do it,” Iffert said. ...
