The Babcock and Brown empire has an almost infinite capacity to shoot itself in the foot, repeatedly.There the group was with two of its satellites, Babcock and Brown Wind (BBW) and Babcock and Brown Infrastructure (BBI) with good news for investors about distributions and encouraging talk about the future.Both groups released their statements around 9.40 am, around 20 minutes after Transurban released its shock news of a big cut in its distribution and a change in the basis for paying its shareholders.At 3.58 pm the weaker of the satellites, Babcock and Brown Power (BBP) released its statement on distributions and the news was all bad.No payout for the June half and the 2009 payout slashed by almost 50%. Ouch and a big ouch to be made public with two minutes before trading finished.Even though the company says the WA gas crisis won't be 'material' as it did last week, the lowered expectations for 2009 give the impression that it will. In fact 2009 pre tax earnings look like falling into the low end of existing analysts forecasts.Therefore there is every opportunity that the 2009 earnings will end up around & #36;440 million, or lower.BBP securities slumped 18C in that time (and into the after 4 pm 'settlement') to 72C, a fall above 20%. Ouch, indeed. Citi has been a forceful, lonely bull for months on Blockbuster (BBI). For reasons that are mysterious to us, the bank continues to anticipate 200%+ returns on the stock. Now that the Circuit City (CC) deal is dead , Citi reiterates their thesis and sees the company benefiting from: cost reductions improvements in Total Access [movies by mail] profitability a strong title-line up share gains from in-store competitors "Rock the Block" facelifts that are starting to generate incremental sales. One odd tidbit though: Citi never incorporated the Circuit City bid or the probability of the merger into their estimates and price for BBI. And here's another: We have heard no argument that persuades us that Blockbuster will do anything but gradually go out of business over the next few years. Except for a short-term trade or liquidation sale, we can't imagine going long the stock. If Citi or Blockbuster can explain why consumers will still trek to a video store to rent DVDs in five years (or how BBI will convert itself into an iPod retailer in the meantime), we'll be glad to listen. Blockbuster (BBI) has finally come to the same realization most of the world had in April : There's no good reason for it to buy Circuit City (CC), another foundering retailer. So it's ditching those efforts, "spooked by souring market conditions" and whatever it found in Circuit City's books, the WSJ reports ($). The video-rental chain's move to withdraw its bid leaves Circuit City scrambling to ensure its future. Circuit City had reluctantly agreed to allow Blockbuster and others access to its books after big stockholders pushed for the move. The company could now continue to seek a buyer, or raise new financing to permit it to go it alone. ... Circuit City played down Blockbuster's move by saying its board continues to evaluate all options, including a sale. In a statement, it said the review "is an active and an ongoing process." ... Circuit City's hiring of Goldman Sachs Group to guide a review "was not dependent on Blockbuster's participation," Circuit City Chief Executive Officer Phillip J. Schoonover said in a statement Tuesday. While the deal was popular with Carl Icahn , Blockbuster's biggest shareholder, it never caught on with Circuit City shareholders; CC traded below the offer price of $6-8 per share the whole time.
