Hi guys, this isn't really going to be liveblogging, as such, but it will be an almost-liveblogging experience, insofar as I will sometimes write in this entry while I am working and listening to my favorite BBC program, Words and Music . One of my favorite things is when you love something, some tiny part of the world, and you don't know why but you know immediately that you love it. Those things are special, and so basic in their importance. I came to love Words and Music in a serendipitous way: I had just moved into this house up north, with its darkness and silent nights, and I was having to sleep in a strange house alone. I am not very fond of just talk-talk-talking on Radio 4, so I turned the dial, and happened upon a whispering female voice reciting T.S. Eliot with tinkling music in the background, as if from another universe, where they loved Prufrock as well. (Right now, Ewan MacColl is singing about his father, "My Old Man": "My old man wasn't really old, it was just that I was young" and "He felt he'd given all he could give, so he did what thousands others did, abandoned hope and the will to live, they killed him, my old man.") After T.S. Eliot, the show lapsed into random classical music, with bits of words strung together, and I swear I have never heard anything so magical or perfect for a Sunday night. I began hearing it more often, and once it occurred to me to check online for what this enchanting show was--finding ou ...

Afternoon Play: Blinded by Science 03-10-2008 Blinded by Science A scientific comedy by Paul Viragh. Professor Michael Hart is a leading figure in genetic and biological research, and in the running for a plum government job. But he has an "unethical" rival, an ailing marriage, a lack of selfesteem and an ungrammatical self-help CD. From The Radio Times Very smart: Paul Viragh's comedy puts science in the title but adds politics to the story to make the laughs arresting. Two rival scientists are competing to become the government's new adviser on genetics-the ethics minefield that divides voters and so scares politicians. Perhaps science can't resolve the issues but it should be the one asking the questions and waiting for the answers before taking decisions. Pure scientc method is what we need but it isn't going to be what we get. Not when one of the rivals is old-school and the other is very new-school. Blinded by Science is about how far this pair are willing to go to get the job: as they try to beat each other to the post, what price the real questions about embryo research? James Fleet and Stuart McQuarrie star. Big Bang Day - The Great Big Particle Adventure - BBC Radio Documentary Series - cheops The huge LHC accelerator at CERN is designed to ask the most fundamental questions in science - what is the stuff of the Universe, where did it come from, how does it work, and would existence be possible if it were any different? In this series, comedian and physicist Ben Miller asks the CERN scientists what they hope to find. Three episodes of approximately thirty minutes each. Episode 1: Atom The notion of atoms dates back to Greek philosophers who sought a natural mechanical explanation of the Universe, as opposed to a divine one. The existence what we call chemical atoms, the constituents of all we see around us, wasn't proved until a hundred years ago, but almost simultaneously it was realised these weren't the indivisible constituents the Greeks envisaged. Much of the story of physics since then has been the ever-deeper probing of matter until, at the end of the 20th century, a complete list of fundamental ingredients had been identified, apart from one, the much discussed Higgs particle. In this programme, Ben finds out why this last particle is so pivotal, not just to atomic theory, but to our very existence - and how hopeful the scientists are of proving its existence. Episode 2: Who Ordered That? The atoms that make up our material world are important to us, but it turns out they aren't so significant on the cosmic stage. In fact early in ...

Four programmes in BBC Radio 4's popular natural science series, The Material World, will feature the work of different scientists from The Open University. The scientists are Dr David Robinson, Senior Lecturer in Biological Science, Dr John Murray, Senior Research Fellow in Earth and Environmental Sciences (on Nov 20), John Zarnecki, Professor of Space Science (on Nov 27), and Dr Vincent Gauci, Lecturer in Earth Systems and Ecosystem Science (on Dec 4). In the first programme, Quentin Cooper joins Dr David Robinson as he hunts for speckled bush crickets at Wittenham Clumps, near Didcot in Oxfordshire. David's work is concentrating on recording the ultrasonic calls between male and female crickets and the technologies used to measure and record them. Quentin also visits the Natural History Museum to see living and dead examples of bush crickets and interviews cricket expert Judith Marshall. Each programme follows a scientist as he works on a specific project, giving the listener insights into the particulars of scientific research. As well as The Open University researchers, each programme also features work by scientists from other organisations, to show how science is a collaborative endeavour. Further information about each episode, the series and the scientific issues being discussed can be found at www.open2.net/materialworld from Thursday October 9. Editor's Notes The four programmes mentioned of the Material World are BBC and O ...

As you should by now have read on The Stage ’s news pages, BBC Radio is to host a major science fiction season with programmes running across Radio 3, Radio 4 and BBC7 early in 2009. Judging by the response so far from the blogosphere , the season is one that fans of the genre are looking forward to, even if they’re not too keen on the months they’ll have to wait. Unfortunately, when Stage broadcasting correspondent Matthew Hemley spoke to drama commissioner Jeremy Howe, there just wasn’t enough space in the news story for everything he told us… ...
