Weird day, weird schedule ... as a result, here are your Olybullets and your regular bullets all jumbled together . 7-2 Hamed Ehadadi -- he has had some of the biggest numbers of any player in these Olympics -- is the kind of big man project an NBA team would be willing to take on, but the State Department isn't so hot on the idea, because Ehadadi is from the "Axis of Evil" nation of Iran. Some thoughts about the impact of that ruling , and an update on efforts to clear away the red tape so that the big man can come to the U.S. Gilbert Arenas claims his life is not interesting enough for a reality show , but is anybody buying that? Dan Steinberg of the Beijing Sports Smog from Team USA's win: "... the U.S. fans are already starting a 'Car-los Boo-zer, Car-los Boo-zer' chant, calling for the closest thing this team has to a walk-on. ... Dwyane Wade makes a three-pointer and points at the bench. Carmelo and Kobe and LeBron stand and point back at him and laugh. Carlos Boozer unties and reties his shoes. The Journalist sitting next to me just went to get a beer. I guess we're all trying to stay interested. Like, did you know that when the PA people announce each basket, it happens in both English and Chinese? And that the Chinese version of 'Tayshaun Prince' sounds nothing like 'Tayshaun Prince?'" Of all the resignation press conferences I have attended, Michael Vaughan's was easily the most emotional . Visibly moved throughout, he choked when thanking his family for the support he has received from them during his five years as England's captain. Towards the end, we were all willing him through it. Not one Journalist in the room had expected to be there today. The managing director of England Cricket, Hugh Morris , spoke of his surprise at Vaughan's decision although Vaughan revealed that he had been considering it since England's victory in Napier in March . In order to see this content you need to have both Javascript enabled and Flash installed. Visit BBC Webwise for full instructions var emp = new BBC.Emp(); emp.setWidth("400"); emp.setHeight("260"); emp.setDomId("TMS_03_08_08"); emp.setPlaylist("http://news.BBC.co.uk/media/emp/7530000/7539700/7539764.xml"); emp.write(); It is a time-consuming and pressurised job, but it was the lack of runs that did for Vaughan in the end. Fiercely proud and professional, he simply could not stand the constant debate over the value of his place in the team any longer. It might also have started to affect the dressing-room - players will support and comfort their out-of-form captain for a while, but then respect starts dangerously to erode. Vaughan decided to quit before that happened. Also, there was an element of having little choice. Had England wanted to name five bowlers for the f ...

Sha Tin, Hong Kong As a Journalist, and a BBC one at that, I'm not really supposed to get emotionally attached to the event I'm covering but I'm afraid at these Olympics I've found it really difficult to detach myself. I feel so proud when a Brit does well and can't help getting a bit upset and sad when things go wrong. During this past two days of the Olympic eventing competition here in Hong Kong I have been on the verge of tears at least three times. Firstly when Tina Cook rode the performance of her life to re-light Team GB's chances of a medal.. Then again when I spontaneously commiserated American rider Karen O'Connor on the recent death of her fabulous little pony Teddy.. And then again today when I saw Mary King leaving the dressage arena after her magnificent test . But that's the great thing about this sport. There's always plenty of emotion and drama. Always someone who thought they were the going to do well who doesn't. It's a great leveller and riders know they can never get big headed. We're now a third of the way through the eventing competition here. I'm really excited about tomorrow's cross country phase. This is shaping up to be one of the best Olympic eventing competitions ever. I know the Aussies are looking faves but with a tight cross country time of eight minutes and 0.4 penalties for every second a rider goes over the time, there is plenty of scope for movement up and down the table. Presently Britain are i ...

Humanaut presents: Dave Dresden (Gabriel & Dresden) Sunday, August 31st (Labor Day Weekend!) @ Zen Multiplicity can be a curse or a godsend. In the case of Dave Dresden, the constant jump between DJ and Producer, Journalist and A&R man became a blessing. At a very young age, Dresden developed his passion for music growing up in Connecticut. He frequented local dance clubs and became friendly with a DJ named Moby, a local hero at the time, who would later also serve as his mentor. His popularity grew quickly and demand for Dresden’s sets led to multiple performances weekly. But Dresden knew he wanted more than to be behind the decks. When opportunity knocked in 1996, Dresden changed his focus to radio. He began his highly rated show "Electro Circus", which aired on Hartford, Connecticut's modern rock station, WMRQ until 2000. His radio career continued as music director and on-air personality for Groove Radio, an internet radio station, and music supervision for Pete Tong's highly influential Essential Selection show on the BBC Radio 1. Always seeking new endeavors, Dresden became a dance music Journalist and began writing reviews and features for national magazines such as DMA, DJ Times, and Mixer. Dresden was named a reporter to the highly regarded Billboard Club Play chart. Dresden profiled Paul Oakenfold, Moby, Masters at Work, Puff Daddy, Sasha & Digweed, BT, The Crystal Method, The Chemical Brothers, and Deep Dish, to name a few. ...

While some of my media comrades are busy addressing the supposedly ineffable (Whose the mommy?), and awaiting the predictable (tonight's speeches), I'll take this moment to catch up on the goings-on in Putin's Russia. We'll start with opposition Journalist Magomed Yevloyev, who ran afoul of local leaders in Ingushetia and was "accidently" shot in the head by the Russian police. As The Economist noted , "even by Russia's recent bloody standards, it was a brazen killing." The BBC has details : According to a lawyer close to the website, Mr Yevloyev was detained by police after landing at Nazran airport late on Sunday. They took him away in a car, Reuters reports. "As they drove he was shot in the temple... They threw him out of the car near the hospital," Kaloi Akhilgov said. Then there is the case of itinerant English teacher Michael White, who stands accused of fomenting war between Russia and Georgia. According to Kremlin officials, White's passport was captured on the battlefield by Russian forces. Nonsense, White says. From the WSJ : The passport the Russians showed off last week does appear to have been Mr. White's. He says it looks to be the one he accidentally left in the seat pocket of a Moscow-New York flight in October 2005. "It seems probable that some Russian person on the flight picked it up," says Mr. White. The U.S. State Department confirms Mr. White reported the passport missing in 2005 and that it was canceled. Mr ...

Are all TV news presenters, women at least, required to be 30-somethings or younger? Some news execs appear to think so, according to papers filed with a London employment tribunal this week, at least (see two articles  here and here ). At one time, TV news presentation in Britain was dominated by 50-something white men. Almost all were grey-haired and buttoned up in jacket and tie (in the very early days it was dinner jacket required). No longer. Since the 1980s, the number of women and ethnic minority newsreaders in British newsrooms has grown. The average age of presenters has fallen. Last month, veteran BBC interviewer Jeremy Paxman caused a storm in media circles after grumping, in an industry forum, that 'middle-class white males' have no future in television. See an article on the row here . The broadcaster said women were being picked evermore frequently for top presenting jobs, and listed five top female television executives. "Do I think it's a man's world in television? That is the most ridiculous question I have been asked all week," he said. Not so, according to 57-year-old Journalist and broadcaster Selina Scott. Scott, who joined ITV's News at Ten in 1980, is suing Britain's Channel Five on grounds of alleged age discrimination. She claims channel went back on an agreement to use her as a stand-in for 35-year-old newsreader Natasha Kaplinsky (pictured ), who is on maternity leave, and said her age was the reason. (A Chann ...

One of the questions I was asked in an interview with the BBC the day before the Olympics opening ceremony threw me a little: "What do you expect from the games?" After thinking for a moment I replied: "I hope to see the very best of sporting competition." Li Datong is a Chinese Journalist and a former editor of Bingdian Freezing Point ), a weekly supplement of the China Youth Daily newspaper. Among Li Datong's recent articles in openDemocracy : " Xiamen: the triumph of public will " (16 January 2008) " China's soft-power failure " (16 May 2008) " China and the earthquake " (2 June 2008) " China: after the quake, the debate " (16 June 2008) " China's leaders, the media, and the internet " (4 July 2008) " China's digital nationalism: Kung Fu Panda under fire " (16 July 2008) " The Weng'an model: China's fix-it governance " (30 July 2008) It may not have been the answer the reporter wanted, but it was an honest one. The Beijing Olympics of 8-24 August 2008 are no doubt the most political such event for decades. The Chinese hosts have a political motivation - to showcase China's arrival as a world power by organising the most spectacular and impressive games in history (see Kerry Brown, " China changes itself: an Olympics report ", 20 August 2008). International media reports on the Beijing Olympics have also been highly politicised. Both are responsible for bringing politics into the Olympics. This bickering - born of differences in ...

BBC News has coverage this morning about the media's reaction to Israel 's decision to clear the soldiers involved in the death of Reuters cameraman Fadel Shana . The " Editors' Blog " on British site Journalism talks about Reuters' "dissatisfaction" at the verdict and the Middle East Online Web site has a report that cites our alert on the ruling, and quotes the concerns of   CPJ's Middle East Senior Program Coordinator Joel Campagna: "These findings mean that a Journalist with a camera is at risk of coming under fire and there's not that much that can be done. That's unacceptable." Australia 's Sydney Morning Herald also covers the IDF's ruling and quotes our statistic of eight Journalist deaths in the West Bank and Gaza since 1992. The Lebanese Web site Menassat has republished our alert from yesterday as well. The arrest of ITN reporter John Ray yesterday in Beijing has stirred up fresh concerns about press freedom during the Games and China 's overall human rights record. From England, both The Telegraph and The Guardian have stories today about the IOC's unwillingness to admit China's failures, particularly in regard to freedom of the press. The International Herald Tribune is also covering the story , as is the Web site Monsters and Critics . ...
