The briefing, chaired by Rep. Frank Wolf, will be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, October 15, in 2168 Rayburn. It is open to the public. This past June, BAHRAIN successfully completed its Universal Periodic Review for election to the United Nations Human Rights Council. Despite approval by the Council, concern still looms regarding BAHRAIN's commitment to human rights and religious freedom. Despite reforms decreed by King Shaikh Hamad bin 'Isa Al Khalifa in 2001-02, Human Rights Watch criticized new laws containing provisions that undermine human rights and the reform measures. Journalists also have questioned the government's sincerity as intra-religious political and social tensions continue to rise. While BAHRAIN has been referred to as a model of democracy and reform in the Arab region, the majority Shiite population feel increasingly marginalized by the ruling Sunni minority. According to the U.S. State Department's International Religious Freedom Report for 2008, government discrimination against Shiites has been found in certain areas, including the allocation of land for places of worship. Football Federation Australia has announced the locations for Australia's upcoming AFC Round 4 2010 World Cup qualifiers. The top two place getters from each Group are guaranteed a place in the 2010 FIFA World Cup Finals in South Africa with the third place getter playing off against the third placed team in Group B. The winner of the playoff series will then play the winner of the Oceania Football Confederation qualifying series for another spot in South Africa. The Socceroos next match will be against Qatar this Wednesday night in Brisbane. Qatar currently sit on top of Group A with 4 points having played one more game than Australia and Japan who sit one point behind in second and third respectively. The following two home games will be played in Sydney with the final blockbuster between the two Group A favourites, Japan and Australia, being played in Melbourne.
