A clinical trial looking at combination of two popular lung cancer drugs Tarceva and Avastin showed that the drugs given together for lung cancer treatment do not increase survival rates. Tarceva is marketed by Genentech and Avastin by Roche. Both drugs are already widely available in US and Europe as lung cancer treatment. Both drugs belong to a series of drugs under targeted therapies – innovative drugs that are also called ‘smart bombs’ because they are able to differ cancerous cells from healthy ones and kill those affected by the disease. read more ... OSI Pharmaceuticals Inc. (NASDAQ: OSIP) is getting hit hard in early trading this morning. The biotech has released data showing that a Phase III trial of Genentech's (NYSE: DNA) Avastin combined with Tarceva in certain patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer did not meet the primary endpoint of increasing overall survival compared with Tarceva plus placebo. The study assessed cancer patients who had progressed after going through platinum based chemotherapy treatments. One note that the company made was that it did show evidence of clinical activity and it saw improvements in secondary endpoints of progression-free survival and response rate when Avastin was added to Tarceva compared to Tarceva alone. OSI Pharma is getting slammed in the early morning trading on an already tough morning for stocks. Shares are down 13% at $39.77 on about 6,500 shares. Its 52-week trading range is $32.10 to $53.71.
