Richard Waller, Chicago Dear Richard, You probably don't realize how much carbon dioxide (CO2) you're putting into the atmosphere when you operate your automobile. If your car gets 26 miles per gallon (and that is much better than the national average of 21 mpg), one pound of CO2 comes out of your tailpipe every mile. CO2 exists naturally as a trace component of the atmosphere (amounting to 385 parts per million (ppm) of dry air). Despite its low concentration, it is a powerful "greenhouse gas" in that it contributes to the atmosphere's ability to retain heat (the so-called greenhouse effect). Right now, CO2 concentration is increasing at a rate of just under 2 ppm per year, and Automobiles are a big contributor. ...
