NEW YORK--In an announcement sure to raise eyebrows among the companies gathered at the Web 2.0 Expo here, IBM said Wednesday it is opening the IBM Center for Social Software. So is IBM intent on becoming another social media company? Hardly. Most likely Big Blue intends the new center to be a focal point for developing software tailored to help companies build social networking tools onto the sites. More importantly, the center could help IBM tailor consulting packages from IBM Global Services. With that in mind, IBM's decision to open the center in Cambridge, Mass., (where the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University are based) rather than in Silicon Valley (where most social media companies are based ) makes more sense. In a press release, IBM describes the facility as an incubation center where it can collaborate with both customers and people in academia. So why's this interesting? Many companies here on the exhibit floor at the Jacob Javits Center aren't social media companies. Instead, they're trying to sell software, hosting, and consulting services to social media companies and to traditional technology buyers like Auto makers that are trying to add communities and other "social" tools to their Web sites. Tata Nano specifications and details rumors Market sources are now hinting at the specifications of the Tata Nano model which is expected to be launched next month. Tata continues to face problems at their West Bengal plant though they are still planning to launch it as per the original schedule. Sources say that Tata Nano would be made available in three variants at launch. These would be: standard, deluxe and luxury. The top end luxury model would feature HVAC, power window, central locking, tinted glasses, extended reflector, front and rear fog lamps and instrument cluster with trip meter. This would be in addition to other features like body color bumper and door handles, door lock on the co-driver side, slider with recliner, three-spoke steering wheel and double stalk combi-switch. The deluxe version would feature just the HVAC and tinted windows. The base edition would feature none of these enhancements. Tata Motors spoke about the launch schedule: “Tata Motors has said that the plan is to launch the car in the October-December quarter of the year. The company is yet to declare the exact launch date. When unveiling the car at the Delhi Auto Expo on January 10, Tata Motors had said that the car will be available, when launched, in standard and higher-end versions. The GAU-17 (GAU-2 for the SOCOM version) Gatling gun is slaved to a sensor that rolls down out of the Osprey belly when the gun deploys -- housing a CCD camera, IR camera and laser range finder. The gun can track 360 degress, but there is a software-driven safety zone that makes sure rounds don't blow the rotors off. If the Osprey has to maneuver away from the target and the crew chief can't hold the gun on the bad guys manually, the system slaves the gun to the point of the last shot, slewing it as the plane moves. The fire control computer compensates for range and angle as well. There is no capability for the pilot to control the gun, but there's an Auto feature than swings the gun to the barrel forward position, 10 degrees down so the pilot can steer the Osprey onto target. Citroen C3 Picasso launched in France French carmaker Citroen has announced the launch of their latest car model. This new model is the C3 Picasso which is essentially a raised model of their C3 sedan. This new model is being manufactured at their Trnava plant in Slovakia. It would compete with several existing models in the market including Opel Meriva, Nissan Note, Ford Fusion and Renault Grand Modus. Citroen said that they are going to market this car to couples with young children. The launch comes at a time when the Auto market is struggling with slowing down sales. The company believes that the model is exciting enough to attract new customers. The downside: the U.S. trade deficit increased 5.7% in July to $62.2 billion, the U.S. Commerce Department announced Thursday . Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News had expected a $58.0 billion trade deficit for July. The upside: the non-petroleum trade deficit in goods declined 9.8% to $29.6 billion -- its lowest level in six years, the Commerce Department said. Almost all of July's trade deficit increase was due to oil. So, does the July trade statistic constitute a modest victory, or something less? "It means the nation's trade deficit picture is improving, just as long as we don't use any oil," economist Peter Dawson said. "Kidding aside, the non-oil component of the trade deficit continues to improve, and I'm emphasizing that dimension. The oil import component should decrease provided oil prices continue to moderate and Americans continue to cutback gasoline use, so the trend line at least through Q4 is a good one for the trade deficit." Overall in July, imports rose 3.9% to $230.3 billion, and exports increased 3.3% to $168.1 billion.
