clipped by: A53GG4 Clip Source: gas2.org Are Automakers To Blame For Consumer Car-Buying Trends? Auto Alliance Weighs In Written by Clayton B. Cornell For years it’s been assumed that, using their superior marketing skills, automakers have the ability to trick consumers into buying SUVs and pickup trucks…when, in reality, the consumers really only wanted to buy compact cars . While that’s probably quite flattering to the marketing departments, it doesn’t have the important benefit of actually being correct. Current events are now allowing people to see more clearly the greater force at work driving consumer demand: Gas prices. Gas just pushed past $4 a gallon – a record high. With no drop on the horizon, customers are adjusting not only their driving habits but their purchasing patterns, as well. That time has arrived. By the end of next year more than 50 new models of hybrids are expected to be available, and the sales of clean diesel vehicles are expected to grow from less than 1% of sales today to 10-15% by 2015. GM, Ford and Chrysler all had their credit ratings lowered a step further into junk status today by Standard & Poor’s (which, like BusinessWeek), is owned by McGraw-Hill). The chief concern of the rating agency is the cash burn of all three companies due to the worsening economy, high fuel prices and consumers leaving pickups and SUVs. In fact, the ratings agency’s bombshell was that while U.S. light vehicles should run at an annualized rate of 14 million for the next 18 months, oil prices rising to $200 a barrel could drive Auto sales as low as 11.7 million units next year. S&P pegged the chances of that at 20%. Less than 12 million in sales next year would be a very difficult sales level for the Big Three to sustain, and would make it almost a certainty that one of the companies would have to seek a white-knight buyer or Alliance partner. The three U.S. automakers are each rated B- now, six levels below investment grade, S&P said. GM's partly owned finance unit, GMAC LLC, was also lowered to the same rating. ``Liquidity for all three automakers is adequate for now, but will be significantly reduced in the second half of this year and during 2009 by continued heavy losses and cash outflows,'' wrote S&P analyst Robert Schulz. All three companies have been slashing white and blue collar salaries, reducing production and accelerating plans to replace SUVs with smaller cars. At present, all three companies have a problem of not having enou ...

By Guest author This is a guest post from Charles Territo, Director of Communications for the Auto Alliance (BMW, Chrysler, Ford, GM, Mazda, Mercedez Benz, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Toyota, and Volkswagen). It originally ran on the Wonk Room . For most of this year rising gas prices have been on everyone's mind. Believe me, the Auto industry understands very well just how much of an impact $4/gallon gas has had on American consumers. As you may have seen, it's having an impact on us, as well. Last week, the Auto Alliance and the National Auto Dealers Association sponsored tire pressure checks for members of Congress and their staff who park in the Rayburn Office Building. Surprisingly, we found that most drivers had tires between 5 and 7 pounds under inflated -- some had tires under-inflated by as much as 20 pounds. This significantly reduced their vehicle's fuel economy. We all share a goal of increasing fuel economy, as well as enhancing energy security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and the fuel economy increases passed last year by Congress (and supported by the Auto Alliance) will help. But consumers want ways to fight back against high gas prices right now. By properly inflating tires, we can have an immediate impact on the more than 245 million vehicles currently on our nation's roads and highways. Earlier this year, we cosponsored the Alliance to Save Energy's Drive Smarter Challenge . As part of this campaign we advoca ...
