This is a guest post written by Frank Warren of the award winning blog PostSecret and PostSecret book series. PostSecret is a community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on homemade postcards. Warren continues to receive hundreds of postcards from around the world daily at www.PostSecret.com . For more information on Frank Warren and his newest book, ‘A Lifetime of Secrets,’ be sure to visit our Authors@Mashable page . This is the first of 3 posts followed by a one-on-one Q&A via Yahoo! Live. Here is the first secret I will share with you. Even though I think of PostSecret as an art project, I have no artistic background or training. So as I have grown PostSecret into the largest advertisement-free blog in the world, I have seen with clear eyes how social media is making the impossible possible. The second secret I want to share with you is that this growth in audience is due to two factors; killer content from the community and leveraging social networks. Closed virtual communities allow PostSecret to grow geometrically, but leveraging those communities creates the potential for exponential growth. In my next few posts I would like to talk about how understanding the important differences between social networks, and further, learning how to use the unique viral mechanisms in each one, can bring about explosive growth. Let’s look at facebook, YouTube and MySpace. Here is a link to an event page on faceboo ...

Dark fantasy writer Michael Cisco broke radio silence on his blog last month to complain about his experiences with Prime Books , an independent publisher of science fiction, fantasy, and horror fiction, starting with the fact that he hasn't gotten any royalties from his last novel, The Traitor . "Eagle-eyed vigilance in following the [ Amazon.com sales rank," he writes, "especially following selection by [Jeff] VanderMeer for the top 10 fantasy books [of 2007], and a glowing review from Nick Mamatas , gives me reason to believe at least 500 books have been sold just at that venue." "I am very sorry that we have, in Michael Cisco's eyes, failed him," Prime executive editor Sean Wallace emailed when I contacted him about Cisco's allegations. "And he makes one point that I will concede: We want to improve our ongoing communications with our Authors. I hope Michael will allow us to do so in his case. What I must dispute is that Michael has been cheated. He has not. Our royalty statements are accurate and truthful and easily verified. He has now seen his statement and knows that his royalty payment is accurate. It would be unprofessional for us to share these figures in public and I am sure Michael would agree." (Rudimentary numbers are, of course, readily available through Nielsen Bookscan ; I will merely note that Cisco's estimation of his sales was grossly inflated.) But what about Cisco's other allegations about a lack of transpar ...

Painter Elena Climent has created a 10-foot tall, 30-foot wide mural for New York University’s Languages and Literature building displaying famous New York Authors' writing spaces. Washington Irving, Edith Wharton, Zora Neale Hurston and Frank O'Hara are the famous (dead) Authors included. All of them have worked in New York at some point in their careers and Ms. Climent tried to depict their desks and libraries. (We hope she'll never try to recreate our horrific work space here in the bullpen). Ms. Climent told the New York Times that the university selected three of the Authors and asked her to choose three, but stipulated that none could be living. The Times has a slideshow of the panels here , or you can see it in person at NYU's building at 19 University Place. ...

What a wonderful subject Ophelia Field has found, and how adroitly she has handled it. In the Kit-Cat Club, the coterie of Whig writers and politicians that began in the last years of the 17th century and lasted into George I's reign, she finds both a mirror and a source of great movements of taste and power. The club's founder was the cultivated publisher Jacob Tonson, who gathered and fed his Authors at the Cat and Fiddle in Gray's Inn Lane ('kat' being slang for a small fiddle). Swelling numbers impelled a move to more spacious quarters, and eventually to ...
