Want to relieve anxiety? Chew gum. Want to be more alert? Chew gum. Want to reduce stress? Chew gum. Such, in a nutshell, are the findings of Australian behavioral and brain-science professor Andrew Scholey. He studied 40 people, average age 22, to see how chewing gum affected their score on what's known in the biz as the Defined Intensity Stressor Simulation (DISS). The findings were quite positive. A couple of more specific tidbits: Levels of salivary cortisol ( a physiological stress marker) were lower in gum-chewers than in non -- 16 percent during mild stress; 12 percent in moderate. Multi-tasking gum chewers improved their baseline DISS scores by 67 percent during moderate stress and by 109 percent during mild stress. So keep chewing. Again, we ask you to do it with your mouth closed. We thank you for that part. The folks at Wrigley Science, which work with Researchers to determine the health benefits of gum-chewing, thank you for chewing at all. So, gum chewers, do tell: Does it lower your anxiety level, reduce your stress, hone your multi-tasking abilities? --Leslie Garcia ...
