The original S.T.A.L.K.E.R. was a game which had us unashamedly quaking in out booties. Shadowy basements full of lurking monstrosities, storm-lashed heaths and intense, full-scale military confrontation. Clear Sky looks like all that and more. (Duration: 0' 0) ...

clipped by: JohnWaterman Clip Source: www.planetary.org As MESSENGER flew past the night side of Mercury in January , its Fast Imaging Plasma Spectrometer (FIPS) scooped up ions from an Atmosphere so tenuous that it's usually called an "exosphere." FIPS measured the expected amounts of ions like sodium, potassium, and calcium that had previously been detected in Mercury's exosphere, but to the science team's great surprise there was also water present, and in large amounts. "Nobody expected that. I don't know a single person that did. We were astonished, just astonished," said MESSENGER science team member Thomas Zurbuchen. Click to enlarge > How could there be water on Mercury? Firstly, it has long been theorized that there may be reservoirs of water ice in small areas of Mercury's poles where local topography creates permanently shadowed spots Second, the water could come from comets. Third, the process of chemical sputtering could create water where none existed before from the ingredients of solar wind and Mercury rock Tags: messenger , science , mercury , planets , solar system , astronomy ...

I've just posted a news story on the latest results of the MESSENGER mission, announced in a telephone news conference held today. The timing may seem strange, as it's the day before a major holiday in the U.S., exactly the right time to hold a press conference if your goal is for people to ignore or overlook the news. However, the mission had no choice; the timing was dictated by the editors of Science magazine, who selected Independence Day .... ...

Galesburg’s tomorrow is dependent on change. Everyone is aware that Galesburg needs employment opportunities for our citizens. To do this Galesburg must take the steps necessary to appeal to potential corporations by creating a positive social Atmosphere, using the resources we have and thinking outside the box. When looking to locate to a community, businesses take into account the social Atmosphere: how is the school system, are neighborhoods maintained, and safety. As a community we need to be adamant that the youth in Galesburg are provided the best educational opportunities. This could be established by creating parenting classes for those who need direction in fostering good learning skills, helping parents take the reins on their child’s education and in turn lead to lower drop out rates among our youth. Right in our backyard we have access to a superb example of higher learning with Knox College and even have a community college available to us in Carl Sandburg College. These two institutions are assets and need to be shown as such to potential corporations. The Neighborhood Improvement Department, recently created by the city, is a step in the right direction. It should ensure all neighborhoods will be maintained in an appropriate manner, giving Galesburg the “curb appeal” that would be desirable to future businesses. Galesburg is home to safety and emergency facilities that do a great job as with OSF St. Mary Medical Cen ...

Every Fourth of July for “many, many years,” Barbara Peckham has spent her day with thousands of others at the Fourth of July Jamboree, put on by the East Woodstock Congregational Church. This year was no different, as Friday found Peckham, of Woodstock, among the crowd enjoying scores of food, music, a tag sale, book sale and parade on the church green. A member of the church, Peckham said she attends year after year to enjoy the day with friends and family and to support her church. This year, she took particular pleasure in attending with her great-grandchildren. “This is my seventh time coming,” said Caleb Peckham, 7. In its 52nd year, the Jamboree is the church’s largest fundraiser, and is a staple event in the town. “We come every year,” said Woodstock resident Cindy Preston. “The kids have fun.” Preston’s son, Eric, 7, won the frog-jumping contest for the second year in a row, with an 117-inch jump from his frog, Tiger, caught from a pond behind the Prestons’ house. Jamboree co-chairmen Jim Graley and Drew Dearborn said the cloudy weather and threat of rain brought a slow start to the day, but the crowds grew as the day progressed. Graley and Dearborn said the goal was to raise around $6,000, which is donated to the church and the Woodstock Fire Department. “There’s a bazillion things going on,” Graley said. “A lot of things don’t really make money, they’re more for the people.” Some of the myriad offerings at the Jamboree ...
