If you get Bradford Cox talking about music long enough, the conversation almost inevitably will turn to Stereolab . The Deerhunter frontman and maker of all that Atlas Sound is a longtime fan, and a passionate one at that. Which makes him a fine fine choice to warm up a handful of dates on Stereolab's forthcoming North American tour . Atlas Sound will handle the opening slot on the first leg of the jaunt, which kicks off September 20 in Costa Mesa, California. Stereolab, of course, are gearing up for the release of their new one, Chemical Chords , due August 18 worldwide and August 19 in the U.S. via Duophonic UHF Disks/ 4AD . Atlas Sound's debut LP will make its way to vinyl via Kranky July 28. And Deerhunter's Microcastle is due October 28 via Kranky in North America and 4AD elsewhere. Tour dates for all parties are available down below. read more ...

GPS Business News interviewed last week with Peter Friedland, equity analyst at Soleil Group. Peter has been in the equity research field for the last twelve years with a focus on GPS and wireless since the year 2000. In the most recent years he has been covering Garmin, TomTom, Tele Atlas, Navteq, Trimble and Harman. He recently added Intermap and GeoEye to its coverage. Willing to understand the steep decline of the TomTom share in the last weeks – the share tumbled this week below its 2005 IPO price – we asked him a few questions. GPS Business News: How shall we understand the low price of the TomTom stock? How would you compare that to Garmin? Peter Friedland: TOM2 and GRMN shares have both been under significant pressure so far this year due to: concern regarding the soft consumer spending environment and how that will impact the PND market; and weaker than expected Q1 results (both unit volumes and ASPs), which were partly attributable to excess channel inventory coming out of Q4. Specific to TOM2, we believe the stock has also been impacted by: significant deceleration in revenue growth, as the company now expects 2008 revenue growth of just 5-10%, down from 27% in 2007; and the use of €1.8 billion of debt to pay for the Tele Atlas acquisition, which has stretched the company's balance sheet. TOM2 and GRMN shares are currently trading at similar 2009 EV-to-EBITDA multiples of roughly 8x and 7x, respectively (based on our es ...

Atlas Sound, a young singer from the suburbs of Georgia, is a self-described "true queer art punk" who writes intimate, intelligent lyrics that were probably hastily scribbled on an old Hilroy in his bedroom. Personal and altruistic, this singer aims to be therapeutic in his lyrics. Similarly, El Guincho (aka Pablo Díaz-Reixa) is an ebullient Spanish pastiche musical artiste. Maybe they're not so similar after all. –D.C. (with S.T.) Tickets are $15 @ Blue Skies Turn Black La Sala Rossa, 4848 Boulevard St-Laurent, Montreal, QC ...

When Atlas Sound released Let the Blind Lead Those Who Can See but Cannot Feel back in February, North Americans got a bit of a raw deal compared to their European counterparts. Over across the pond, the Bradford Cox solo debut came sporting a whole bonus disc of extra tracks when released via 4AD, while we were left holding a single 14-track disc. (More after the jump.) It’s nice to see an unhealthy touring commitment and overwhelming demand both on Atlas Sound and Deerhunter’s part hasn’t stopped Bradford Cox from maintaining his blog and keeping devotees amused and elated with random road recordings. Described as a “virtual seven-inch,” Amsterdam Midi is fronted by the dreamy “Balcony,” which we have no reason to believe wasn’t recorded on the balcony of his accommodations. (More after the jump.) Reader, you're going to have to forgive me if this one runs longer than the usual paragraph most other featured songs receive. Today's article is half review, half inspired editorial. Stick with me. A few weeks ago we featured The Chap's "They Have A Name" as our song of the day. Today, we feature a song masquerading as a remix of that track. It comes courtesy of Atlas Sound, and yes, he is literally masquerading – the music world is one large soiree, and Atlas Sound has just arrived in full costume, head to toe. His mask doesn't come close to resembling the person he's imitating, but it isn't really supposed to. After all, it's a costume party – guests are encouraged to run wild with their imaginations. His mask is adorned with feathers and excess superglue and haphazard sequins. There are crude ridges in the mold and a few cuts near the chin. It's kind of ugly but also elegant, in an asymmetric way, and you (gracious party attendee) most definitely like it because it fits the theme of the night. If it's the kind of thing where the host hands out awards, maybe later he'll win one in the category of "Best Interpretation on a Theme." Just as that mask shares only the most basic recognizable elements of human form – eyes, a nose, a mouth, ears – this remix uses a skeletal copy of the original drumline as a launching pad for something tangential, exotic, and overwhelmingly unexpected. At some point a second or two of the vocals jut their ...

Yes folks, another dream pop / post rock / shoegaze outfit with a ridiculously long title for an album; Atlas Sound is the moniker for Deerhunter’s Bradford James Cox, and is a container for what you would presume would be his more self-indulgent side project stuff that isn’t as good as the material he produces [...] ...

Deerhunter have finally announced the release details for the long in the works Microcastle , their follow-up to last year's Cryptograms (boys sure love their compound words, don't they?). The record comes out October 28 via Kranky in North America and 4AD in the rest of the world. The Atlanta foursome (Bradford Cox, Moses Archuleta, Lockett Pundt, and Joshua Fauver) recruited new guitarist Whitney Petty before their recent European tour, but Petty is not featured on the record. Nor is former guitarist Colin Mee. However, "Saved by Old Times" features a vocal collage by Black Lips' Cole Alexander, and guitarist Pundt takes over for Cox on lead vocal duties on two songs: "Agoraphobia" and "Neither of Us, Uncertainly". Microcastle 's first single will be a limited 7" of "Nothing Ever Happened" with B-side "Little Kids (Demo)". Deerhunter are opening for Nine Inch Nails this summer and are planning more shows for the fall. But before the band begins its summer tour, Cox will play a few more shows with his other band/side project Atlas Sound, including a stop at our own Pitchfork Music Festival very soon. Though tourmate El Guincho will be absent , Cox will still play the shows. read more ...

Photo by Daniel Cantó Aw, shucks. We sincerely regret to inform you that Spanish sampledelic dance sensation Pablo " El Guincho " Díaz-Reixa has been forced to cancel a good portion of his world tour due to personal issues. Yes, that includes his appearance at next weekend's Pitchfork Music Festival as well as his string of dates with Atlas Sound . (Atlas Sound will still be playing those shows.) A post to the Discoteca Océano blog filed on his behalf notes that El Guincho is exhausted from the whirlwind 2008 he's been enjoying and he needs to take some time off. It also says that he hopes to work on new songs and is thinking of incorporating more people into his shows. El Guincho's amended itinerary is available below. Despite that little bummer, things are still looking awfully good for the festival and all the assorted goings-on around it. Note that individual day tickets are available via TicketWeb for all three days of the fest, though that's not gonna last long now. Here's the updated fest lineup, plus a brief recap of all the other nifty stuff coming at you: read more ...
