4th place: Atlanta Braves (72-90) The Big Three, as they said in those parts Used to give the Braves one hundred starts Fourteen years of champagne But now all that remain Are one Dodger, two medical charts This one's hard to believe, but did you know that the last time the Braves got fewer appearances out of their Big Three than they did this year was back in 1987. One of the three, Greg Maddux, wasn't in a Braves uniform this year, but that's happened a few times with assorted members of the three-man crew since 1988. In fact, there have been years where the Big Three in Atlanta was down to Big One. But this year, the two who did play for the Braves were just shut down early with issues in the left elbow (Tom Glavine) and right shoulder (John Smoltz). But don't let the sad 2008 chapter ruin your enjoyment of this chart and what an absolutely incredible run the three have had in Atlanta. GS in the table means games started. GR means games as a reliever. This series is predicated on educated guesses, past history of the team/general manager, rumors that have been out there for a while, and actions that I feel could be taken. This exercise is me playing GM to inspire conversation and a new way of approaching things. Moves that I complete as previous GMs of teams [...] ...

The Atlanta Braves this afternoon received the results of yesterday’s MRI test on Chipper Jones’ right shoulder. The results confirmed that Jones has acute tendinitis in the shoulder and that the overall structure of the shoulder looked normal for a player of Jones’ experience. Braves Lead Orthopedist Dr. Xavier Duralde has prescribed therapy for the shoulder, followed by a strength program. From an Atlanta Braves Press Release ...

It has been apparent to most people that the Braves wouldn't make the playoffs since the All-Star break. Some realized it after the first week of the season when the Braves picked up playing the way they had the second half of last season: not executing in crucial situations. That explains th... All right, raise your hand if you thought it was even possible for the Nationals to score 18 runs over two consecutive games, because I sure didn’t think so. The Mets’ pitching certainly kept things more exciting than a face-off between first- and last-place teams has any right to be. Still, for all the pitching [...] ...

Filed under: Braves , NL East , MLB Injuries , MLB Rumors When they first came together in the 1990s, John Smoltz , Greg Maddux , and Tom Glavine gave the Atlanta Braves a starting rotation that was a huge factor in the team winning 14 straight division titles. Of course, as time passed, both Maddux and Glavine moved on to pitch in other places. Smoltz, on the other hand, was the constant of the Atlanta Braves pitching staff. The only thing that ever changed for Smoltz was his role with the team, as he spent the three seasons from 2002-2004 as the team's closer. That all could change next season, though, as Smoltz admits he may not be an Atlanta Brave when he returns from shoulder surgery next summer. "I say this for the first time, without reservation, if I'm going to bust my butt and if I feel like I'm good enough and it doesn't work out here, I will be pitching somewhere else ... My dream scenario would be to pitch in the playoffs again, and that's coming from a guy who's been in 13 of them. (Smoltz missed the 2000 playoffs with Tommy John surgery.) To me, that's what I'm about. So if the door gets closed here, it'll have to be explored somewhere else. "Make no mistake," he said a few minutes later. "I am absolutely, 100 percent committed to playing the rest of my career for the Atlanta Braves. But this can't be my only option ... I may not be in the [Braves'] plans. It's no given right, where I've spent 21 years here and [so] ...

This year I thought I would combine positional reviews of the major leaguers with the top prospects at each position. The last few years it hasn’t been too much fun to review each major league position on the Braves and how they did (because for the most part they haven’t done too well). I also wanted to divide up the annual post-season prospect reviewing by position. I stumbled upon the idea of combining the two and taking a look at each position by seeing where we are at the major league level and then who might be the future in the minor leagues. I’ll also throw out the top-5 prospects for most positions (some positions might have more, some less). It will be a pretty exhaustive hashing out of all or our prospects, and in many instances the players included are not “really” prospects, so I will focus more on their ability to help at the major league level. For a team like the Braves, who may have to go into rebuilding mode next year, this approach should give us a good starting point of what our off-season needs are and what positions we should commit long term contracts to. Here is the schedule for this week: Tuesday – First Base Wednesday – Second Base Thursday – Third Base Friday – Shortstop And here’s the tentative schedule for the following week: Monday – Catcher Tuesday – Left Field Wednesday – Center Field Thursday – Right Field And then we’ll get into the pitchers. This should take us through the baseball post-season (when t ...
