The Golden Years of Atari, 1978 - 1981 [Atari]

Source: slashdot.org --- 16 days ago
simoniker writes "Over at Gamasutra, Steve Fulton has published a massive 23,000-word history of Atari from 1978 to 1981, encompassing '... some of the most exciting developments the company ever saw in its history: the rise of the 2600, the development of some of the company's most enduringly popular games (Centipede, Asteroids) and the development and release of its first home computing platforms.' Best quote in there for Slashdot readers, perhaps: 'Atari had contracted with a young programmer named Bill Gates to modify a BASIC compiler that he had for another system to be used on the 800. After that project stalled for over a year Al was called upon to replace him with another developer. So ... Al is the only person I know ever to have fired Bill Gates.'" It seems I’m stuck with the word suck till I actually play a good classic video game. Trouble is, I can’t find my Starcraft and Total Annihilation installers. Speaking of stuck, I’m also stuck watching videos of old games instead of playing them. Talk about a streak of bad luck. Anyway, here I am searching for [...] ...

When Alone in the Dark was released for the Xbox 360, players complained about a variety of the game's systems, and developer Eden Games has said it will try to address some of those problems through an upcoming patch. The fixes and updates are based on the upcoming PlayStation 3 version of the game, currently being shown at Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany. Some of the changes to the game include a streamlined inventory system, an improved camera system (controllable with the right analog stick), and changes to the way the character moves around, as well as an easing up of the difficulty in the driving sections. No word yet on when the patch will come out, or whether all of the changes made to the PS3 version will be added to the 360 update. Image: Atari Eden to fix Alone in the Dark 360 [Eurogamer] ...

Game historian Steve Fulton's previous Gamasutra feature about Atari explored the company's genesis from 1971-1977, spanning the early dreams of a young Nolan Bushnell, the conception of the iconic Fuji and more. Now Fulton returns to continue his fascinating look back on one of the industry's first giants, recalling in detail the company's 'golden years,' from 1978-1981. During this period, Atari birthed its Video Computer System -- or 2600 -- and the Atari 400/800 lineup. ... ...

GamaSutra has a 20 page article on Atari from 1978 until 1981 - the golden age of the console. Those were heady days, friends. Imagination was king and because the graphics were so bad you could make a game do anything - you weren’t held down by expectations of realistic boob effects or blood splatters [...] ...

I know, I know. Video game crash or no video game crash, Atari was the best in the biz back in the heyday, and the commercials they put out for their consoles and games were just that, great. Here’s another blast from the past from Atari: What makes this commercial doubly great is the fact that it [...] ...

Here I go again looking for video game commercials (or commercials that have something to do with video games and their consoles). By Luke Anderson How often have you been sitting at a bus stop or stuck in line at the DMV wishing you could play some Pac-Man? Sure, if you’ve got an iPhone you could just use that to play. However, if you’re not too bad with a soldering iron, then you could just make your own [...] ...
