Just how 'Ultimate' can a netbook be? ...
Taiwan-based computer hardware maker Asus has released a new Wii-like controller called the Eee Stick (pictured left), which promises to bring motion controls to PC gaming. Going by information reported by Register Hardware , the controller includes an "Activation stick" with seven buttons, paired with a "Navigation stick" equipped with an analog stick. Both components appear to incorporate additional buttons on the front ends of the units, much like the Z and C buttons on the Wii Nunchuck controller. Another day, another new ultra-portable laptop from Asus, and another one of the 23 secret Eee models revealed. Today's is one of the most high-end - the S101 which has been described as an "Ultimate" Eee PC. It's pretty high-end stuff for an Asus so there's suggestions that it won't actually carry the Eee PC branding as obviously 'Eee' makes one think of cheap netbooks and, er, monitors and not high-end luxury... ...
It might look like one of Asus’ regular ultraportables cosying up to an Eee PC, but if Crave Taiwan are to be believed this is actually the first shot of the company’s Eee PC S101, a 10-inch netbook with a 64GB SSD. Asus have already confirmed their intention to launch large-capacity SSD models, some of which would be considered “ high end ” compared to the models we’re used to, it seems that this S101 is the first of the new Eee breed. Preliminary specs include an LED-backlit display, Intel Atom processor (no word on whether it’s single or dual-core), and choice of 32GB or 64GB SSD storage. All that in a package just 2.2cm thick and around 1kg in weight; the shiny casing will be available in coffee brown and white. Where the difference between the original Eee’s and the S101 really shows is in the price. CNET Taiwan are saying $699 for the 32GB model and $899 for the 64GB. Hardware and electronic company Asus have announced a new PC controller, bearing striking resemblance to the nunchuk attachment for the Wii remote. It appears to be two wireless nunchuks; one with the analogue stick and the other with buttons in place. Asus even went to the trouble of creating wrist straps and an overall shape identical to that of Nintendo's nunchuck. More inside ...
The shiny brown machine in the photo there is apparently the top-of-the-range Eee PC S101 that was shown in Asus' leaked presentation last month. It looks just a little bigger than the white 901 model next to it, and it will be about 0.87-inches deep, have a 10.1-inch LED-lit LCD, and have an Intel Atom purring away inside. What makes it "ultimate" is presumably in part its SSD: it'll come with either a 32GB or 64GB solid-state drive, and that's why the two models will cost around $699 and $899 when available in October.
