Up 'til now iPhone games have all fit the stereotypical "casual gaming" mold, but with the upcoming Astro Ranch , Tag Games developer Paul Farley hopes to change that. The game, inspired by deep, addictive life simulations like Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon , blends a cutesy, 1950's sci-fi movie motif with typical farming and relationship management components -- both of which can be "played in 10 minute sessions while on a bus or train," or for long stretches of time. Developer Paul Farley revealed that the company hopes to make the game completely "device agnostic" also, meaning that the Nintendo DS release and the iPhone release can trade items back and forth using both systems' internet connectivity. True online multiplayer doesn't seem to be in the plans that Farley revealed to iPwnGames in his recent interview, but online trades and other minor interactions typical of Nintendo DS titles are planned. I'm a bit wary that Farley's plans are a bit too grand, but I would love to have something as deep as Animal Crossing on my iPhone. Super Monkey Ball is fun, but otherwise the system truly lacks engrossing games. Barring any major delays, Astro Ranch should hit the iPhone, Nintendo DS and N-Gage platforms next year. Pocket Gamer has the scoop on an upcoming iPhone game called Astro Ranch that's half Harvest Moon , Half Animal Crossing —both games that require you to manage different resources on a day-to-day basis. We're not sure what other iPhone tech this would involve other than the panning for gold by shaking the camera like a prospector (and controlling the camera with your finger), but it will have multiplayer abilities insofar as you can exchange items and send presents to your buddies. This might just be the best iPhone game yet when it comes out in March 2009, but at the very least it'll be the best iPhone game that involves simulating a '49er. [ Pocket Gamer ] ...

A new song . A tale of love and addiction. It's been a long time since I have been to London. 30 years, to be precise. I lived in Bath, England, for a year when I was 10, and my mother took me and my brothers on occasional weekend trips into London, where we stayed at bed and breakfasts and took in the sites. I have very strong memories of those weekends, and of England in general; I suspect because that year was so unusual for me, it has stayed with me in a way that much of the rest of my childhood in Minnesota hasn't. I found our old house in Swainswick on Google maps recently. It was strange to look down on it from above and recognize it anyway. There was the little church down the street that we occasionally visited. There was the school I went to, across the street from where I lived, and the house the school's headmistress lived in, right next to mine. There was the grave in the back with a stone lid carved with the figure of a supine knight, still clutching his sword. I've been thinking about this, on and off, for a long time, because I would like to go back and visit, but haven't been able to afford to. I started writing this song inspired by that sense of longing for a place I knew when I was a boy. Then it turned into something else, the way songs do, especially when I write them. It sort of turned into a Neil Jordan film. And that's fine with me, as I like Neil Jordan's films. "YOU CAN'T GO BACK TO LONDON" LYRICS: He went do ...

A country blues song about love and loss on the road to Los Angeles. A new song. It's not autobiographical. None of my songs are, not literally. But they all borrow from my experiences, and my experience of moving to Los Angeles was a troubled one. The first time I went to Los Angeles, at age 21, I flew out there. With me was my 16-year-old brother, who had dropped out of school and was running away from home. We financed our trip, in part, with money from insurance -- my brother had been in a very minor car accident, and had gotten a check for $600 to fix a din on the vehicle. Instead, we bought airplane tickets. We also went in for hair cuts. I got mine dyed a vivid fire-engine red, while my brother had his shaved into a finlike blue mohawk. I had never done anything like this, and was terrified. On the airplane, both my brother and I order cocktail after cocktail. I expressed surprise to the flight attendant that she had not checked our IDs. "Well," she said, "I figured, what are you going to do at 30,000 feet?" We sat in a row with an old woman, who stared at my brother's hair. Finally. she asked him about it. "A fraternity prank," he told her. I like to tell people that I was so drunk when I got off the flight that I thought there was two of everything in Los Angeles. I also like to claim that I was so drunk I thought there was an earthquake, but it wasn't the ground that was turning and rolling, it was me. Neither of those stori ...

A new song . An uncommonly bleak and maudlin crime tale. I am aware that when you find yourself writing a song called "They Never Found her Head," you should probably stop what you're doing and reconsider. And not simply reconsider the lyrics, or the song itself. I mean you should reconsider what you're doing with your life. You should drag yourself away from the ukulele and over to a nearby mirror and look at yourself, shaken and ashen, wondering how things went so wrong. You should; I don't. I suppose I've always like the grimness of some old country songs, which don't shy away from grotesque details. Some early country is taken straight from news stories of local tragedies, and, back in the middle part of the century, newspapers had no problem publishing lurid photographs coupled with pathetic text, telling tales of small lives and early, violent ends. I have quite a few books of photographs from the era, and they are startling both in their immediacy and their intimacy. We often see the dead photographed shortly after their death, at the place they fell, unflattering and invasive as such an image might be. I guess this is the lyrical version of such a story, and, in keeping with country's longstanding tradition of telling sad tales, I have tried to make it as sad as possible. "THEY NEVER FOUND HER HEAD" LYRICS: They never found her head They never found her head There was only a ring to identify her In the place where she lay dead ...

Filed under: Gaming , Multimedia , Software , iPhone , App Store Like many not-yet-released videogames, I'm a little worried that Astro Ranch won't be as good as the game in my head right now. Anytime a developer says they were influenced by great games like Animal Crossing and Harvest Moon , as the Tag Games guys do in this interview with the cleverly-named iPwn Games , I get overly excited. A deep simulation game with a casual skin? It sounds just too good to be true. But who knows -- maybe the upcoming Astro Ranch will be worth the excitement. Paul Farley certainly makes it sound good: they say they've been pushing the 3D system to new heights, and that they're aiming to provide a deep enough game to appeal to players with a lot of time on their hands, as well as a fun game that casual players can pick up and then put down after about 10 minutes. They're aiming for connectivity as well -- the game is based on a '50s-style space ranch, and players will supposedly be able to visit each others' ranches, send messages back and forth and even compete and trade with each other. They even claim to be able to connect iPhone players to farmers playing on the DS, but we'll believe that one when we see it. Unfortunately, the screenshots don't impress all that much, but just like the iPhone itself, it seems this game's got a lot of potential. Sounds like they're aiming for a release on the iPhone, DS, and the N-Gage (people are still makin ...

On the shelf ■ The Tigers placed reliever Todd Jones on the 15-day disabled list with a sore right shoulder Sunday, two days after he came off the DL and gave up five unearned runs. Jones is 4-1 with a 4.97 ERA and 18 saves in 21 chances. On the move ■ The Mets found help for their struggling bullpen, acquiring durable right-hander Luis Ayala from the Nationals on Sunday for a player to be named. A reliable reliever for the first four years of his career, Ayala has dipped to 1-8 with a 5.77 ERA this season. He's appeared in 62 games, which ranks among the major-league leaders. Ayala was the longest-tenured Nationals player, having joined the club in 2003 when it was located in Montreal. ...

Brett Lovelady, founder of Astro Studios in San Francisco, has just launched a new, separate company to produce professional gaming products. With Astro's 14 years of hardcore video gaming experience (having designed hit products such as Microsoft's Xbox 360, Hewlett-Packard's Blackbird Gaming PC, and the premium line of Alienware Gaming PCs and laptops), Astro is deep into the space, and noticed that there wasn't a brand focused on high performance products for pro gamers...and their gaming lifestyle. In this video for Core77, Brett talks about the new company, Astro Gaming , and tours us through their first products--the A40 Audio System--comprised of a design-forward headset & Mixamp. The two products have reset gamers expectations (pardon the pun), and are helping to to take pro gaming to the next level. ... ...
