With a testosterone-soaked evening of capoeira, hip-hop and percussion, Brazil's Balé de Rua is the obvious breakout act from this year's Fringe – the dance group most likely to be coming soon to a theatre near you. The show starts innocently enough. The 15 men and sole woman appear in crisp white suits and sharp-brimmed hats, rolling their heads and hips while beating out a samba rhythm. ... Dee Brown and Luther Head, a pair of All-Americans, were announced Thursday as two former Illinois basketball players who will have their jerseys hung above the Assembly Hall floor this fall. The athletic department said Monday that it planned to honor 20 men's players and one women's player by hanging the jerseys in the Hall. Names will be released sporadically, and players to be honored must have achieved one of the following criteria: national player of the year; enshrinement in the National Basketball Hall of Fame; U.S. Olympian; Big Ten Player of the Year; consensus first or second-team All-American. Brown and Head joined former teammate Deron Williams as players honored from the 2005 team that finished as the NCAA tournament runner-up. Head was a second-team All-America in 2005 by The Associated Press and Brown was a second-team pick in 2006. Brown was also named the Big Ten player of the year in 2005. "Deron, Luther and Dee all deserve to be considered among the great players in Illinois history,'' coach Bruce Weber said. "As close as those three are as friends, it's very appropriate that their jerseys will hang together at the Assembly Hall.'' Their jerseys will be honored on Sept. 13 on the A Night of Legends reunion game at Assembly Hall. The jerseys will hang in the Hall but the numbers won't be retired. ... About to head east to study music at Harvard, Einziger says the risk was necessary for him creatively. As the guitarist for hard-edged pop-rock band Incubus, Mike Einziger has headlined arenas and festivals around the world. SEATTLE — Boeing Co. aircraft Assembly workers voted overwhelmingly to strike for the second time in three years but union leaders agreed to hold off on the walkout for 48 hours at the request of Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire and a federal mediator. The vote late Wednesday was 87 percent in favor of a strike that was to have begun at 12:01 a.m. PDT Thursday, after the expiration of the old contract covering more than 27,000 workers. With the extension, Boeing spokesman Tim Healy said the two sides would meet with a federal mediator Thursday. In separate balloting, union members also voted 80 percent to reject Boeing's third three-year contract offer, which included pay raises averaging 11 percent. The offer, which Boeing described as its "best and final," included bonuses totaling at least $5,000, raises averaging 11 percent, pension increases and a 3 percent cost-of-living adjustment _ $34,000 in average pay and benefit gains per employee, according to the company. Announcement of the 48-hour extension at the machinists union Hall drew booing and shouting from about 100 angry shop stewards and other activists that frequently made it impossible for Mark Blondin, the union's chief negotiator, and Tom Wroblewski, president of Machinists District Lodge 751, to be heard. "We have told you all along that our job as negotiators is to negotiate a contract that is acceptable to you, not to negotiate a strike," Blondin said. When the shout ... A last-minute move to avert a potentially bruising strike that could cost more than 27,000 workers weeks of pay would usually be met with unalloyed relief. Not with the Machinists union faithful Wednesday night after Boeing Co. aircraft Assembly workers voted overwhelmingly to strike for an unprecedented second time in three years, then learned both sides had agreed to a 48-hour contract extension at the request of Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire and federal mediators. Chief negotiator Mark Blondin and Tom Wroblewski, president of Machinists District Lodge 751, were repeatedly shouted down at the union Hall with catcalls of "Sellout!" and "What was the strike vote for?" For Boeing, the rejected offer took "the best contact in the industry and we made it better," Vice President of Human Resources Doug Kight said in a news conference. He repeatedly turned aside questions of whether Boeing was relieved to get another chance to avert a strike by offering a sweeter deal. "Responding to a request from the federal mediators is appropriate for both sides," Kight said. "My job at this point is to listen to the union." Jim Proulx, a Boeing spokesman, said company and union negotiators would meet together with a federal mediator at an undisclosed time and location Thursday. Boeing's "best and final offer," presented last Thursday after talks that began May 8, included bonuses totaling at least $5,000 and averaging $6,400, raises averaging 11 p ...
