Ashland High students missed first period Friday and it stunk. Or more accurately, a stink bomb set off somewhere in the school stunk up the East Union Street school around 7:30 a.m., forcing its evacuation. It was a prank, but school officials did not find it funny, Principal Michael C. Tempesta said. "We take it very seriously," he said. "We're investigating. There could be school sanctions, or possibly police sanctioning." School officials noticed a strange smell near the front entrance and called the fire department. Firefighters arrived to discover the smell was even stronger on the second floor. "It met the protocol for an evacuation and we pulled the fire alarm," Ashland Fire Lt. David Iarussi said. Firefighters searched the building looking for the source of the smell, and also called an electrician to make sure it wasn't caused by a mechanical problem. The smell turned out to come from an aerosol can, Tempesta said. "Basically, it was a stink bomb. It was a really strong stink bomb," he said. It did not smell like a typical stink bomb, Tempesta said. Most smell like sulfur, or rotten eggs. This one, he said, almost smelled like a super-strong air freshener. "It was pungent," he said. The school was evacuated for an hour, and the town sent a Connect-CTY message home to parents to tell them what had happened. Tempesta complimented the police and fire departments for making sure the school was safe. "They were very thorough ...

In what may have been a prank that went too far, an Ashland teen has been arrested after setting off a stink bomb at Ashland High School Friday morning, police said. Vincent Picconi, 17, of 49 Summer St., was charged with disturbing a school assembly and assault late Friday after police interviewed several witness at the school, Lt. Richard Briggs said. According to Briggs, Picconi sprayed a can of Super Fart Spray in the school about 7:30 a.m. Friday. The stink caused the school to be evacuated for an hour as fire and police were called to the scene. Fourteen students were treated in the nurse's office for nausea and headaches. The assault charge stems from Picconi's spraying the can toward at least one other student. "Essentially it's horseplay but it tied up a lot of resources for the fire and police departments in response," Briggs said. Briggs said the spray is not illegal and was likely purchased at a joke shop. ...

At the Rotary Club of Ashland Meeting today, our speakers were Incumbent  C.W. Smith and Challenger Jim Olney running for Jackson County Commissioner. Both of the candidates were passionate about their positions, although a little less passion was exhibited than I heard they displayed at the meeting they attended yesterday. It seems a question was broached about accounting practices...is this something we Jackson County citizens need to look in to further? Commissioner Smith  emphasized his ideas for replacing diminishing timber funding, which represents the major revenue source to cover the expenses associated with our County libraries, roads, etc. and addressed a Rotarian's concern about cuts hitting the library services versus being spread out amongst other County services, a plan which Commissioner Smith explained failed when it was attempt during a previous recessionary period.  C.W. Smith has ideas for creating new family wage jobs with a new forest plan that will create health forests. Mr. Olney  emphasized the need for change and accountability, and passionately described his positions, including the distaste for the 26% pay increase the existing commission voted in for themselves during tough economic times. One of my favorite Oregon Realtors, Krista Bolf , held a "Meet the Candidates" gathering at her home today, giving us the opportunity to meet Incumbent State Representative Sal Esquivel who is running for re-election, and Doug McGeary who is running for Circuit Court Judge Position 6 in Jackson County Oregon.     These personable gentlemen were very patient with a forward-thinking Hedrick Middle School student looking for answers. This 7 th grader wanted to hear from Rep. Esquivel what his position is on the Oregon Promise Statewide Scholarship program , and learned that he is very much in favor of supporting higher education.                                              She asked Rep. Esquivel for his ideas on how the Jackson County Library system may get funding to help extend the hours, but Rep. Esquivel referred her to the County Commissioners for her answers. Unfortunately, she missed the opportunity to address Incumbent Jackson County Commissioner C.W. Smith and Challenger Jim Olney, who were the speakers at the Rotary Club of Ashland today, because she was busy working to maintain a 3.5+GPA at school.                                   Doug McGeary shared his thoughts on the importance of ruling on the "letter of the law" versus shading rulings with personal opinion, and his belief that "we have a pretty good group of judges" here in Jackson County, Oregon. I came away from this meeting with the impression that this is one strai ...
