The New Orleans Museum of Art is sharing 89 of its finest works of European and American Art - works that survived the devastation of Hurricane Katrina and the flooding that ensued. The exhibition, Spared from the Storm: Masterworks from the New Orleans Museum of Art, will open at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts on Saturday, November 8, and continue through Sunday, February 8, 2009. Spared from the Storm features works from the 17th through the mid-20th century. Among them are paintings and sculptures by some of history's most influential and well-known artists. We have three presentation on tap for this one: Michael Fulk is a an interactive developer at Wall to Wall and also does freelance work as Future Designs. He'll be presenting "Bending the Pipes" - which will give us a crash course on making mashups, feeds and recombining web content with Yahoo Pipes and Dapper. Next, Olivia Blonde is a web designer at the University of Pittsburgh and previous worked at the Carnegie Libraries where she was reponsible for the redesign of the Carnegie Library website. She'll present "Design Process in a Nutshell". Each designer — or design group — develops a method for solving problems, then evolves that method over time. While no one person or group may view a problem from the same perspective, general similarities often appear in their approach. Olivia's presentation will take us from requirements to concepts to design and to handoff. Finally, Isaac Gierard, a new media developer at Elliance with be showing off a recent project of his, a "CSS Combiner". Isaac will give a brief introduction to a recently developed open source CSS preprocessor for combining multiple CSS files into on and it's benefits for website performance. After last night's torrential rains it was difficult to trust the sunshine and blue skies on our first full day in Chicago. As usual, D rose before anyone else, so the two of us set out to explore the city and scare up some breakfast. I have never been a morning person, but over the past (almost) two years, I've come to enjoy my morning reconnaissance missions with little D. In the morning hours, even a bustling city like Chicago is relatively quiet and just waking up. A peaceful walk through the streets of a new city in search of breakfast and with only one kid to manage, is a nice way to ease into the day, and D is usually content to sit quietly in in the stroller and take it all in... a welcome reprieve from the constant juggling I will have to do once I have two small kids to manage. We wandered down Michigan Avenue, past the American Girl Place , and towards the local Whole Foods Market . Lately, Whole Foods has become our version of Mc Donalds when we travel. I can always find healthy snacks that my kids will enjoy, and I get to try local cheeses, baked goods and produce too. There is always a dining area where we can sit down for a quick bite to eat, and a microwave where we can heat up hot dogs or other prepared foods. Whole Foods certainly isn't cheap, but compared to dining in a restaurant with a picky eater who might reject everything you order, it's a bargain. It's also fast. Puzzling over sculptural installations made by Tara Donovan from pins, drinking straws and buttons is like looking for the image of the Virgin Mary that's been seen on the window of a Springfield hospital. Viewers will either feel they've glimpsed the wondrous transformation of ordinary stuff into something sublime or wonder what the fuss is about. To find out if you're a believer, skeptic or a bit of both, check out the just-opened "Tara Donovan" exhibit at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Regardless of what you decide, the New York-based artist will make you question how to distinguish the everyday from the magical and whether you should even try. The show will be on view through Jan. 4 before traveling to Cincinnati and then San Diego. Visitors will walk under, around and through 16 sculptures constructed from commonplace materials found at a Staples or Home Depot and wonder whether they look like crystal stalagmites growing in a cave or blobs of glued mylar, spooky mist drifting across the gallery floor or a crazy confection of Scotch tape. In the first museum survey of her work, Donovan is showing installations built from 1996 until now made almost entirely by shaping thousands, sometimes millions, of ordinary objects into sculptures that sort of resemble clouds, coral or honeycombs.
