Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) researchers Kevin Ward, MD, Robert Diegelmann, PhD, and Gary Bowlin, PhD, this week received the Award for Excellence in recognition of their outstanding contributions to combat Casualty care from the US Army Medical Research and Materiel Command, Combat Casualty Care Research Program. The three invented WoundStat™, a ground-breaking hemostatic agent for control of bleeding in high-pressure arterial wounds, which are a common combat injury. The award was given to the group “in recognition of their hemorrhage control research, and the resultant development of WoundStat, a product that will significantly increase survival of the combat wounded.” (PRWeb Aug 13, 2008) Read the full story at http://www.prweb.com/releases/woundstat/research/prweb1208484.htm ...

It's a long way from Baghdad to Jellico. But Army Sgt. David K. Cooper's death brings the Iraq war home to those who live at the foot of Jellico Mountain, across the Tennessee line from where he grew up in Williamsburg. Cooper will be buried with full honors Sunday at Jellico's Bowlin Cemetery. He is his hometown's first Iraq war Casualty. "It was always on the TV, and now it's here, up close and personal. It's a sad day," said Williamsburg Mayor Roddy Harrison, who taught and coached Cooper in high school. The Times Tribune of Corbin reports that Junior ROTC members from Whitley County and Corbin high schools carried his flag-draped coffin at the airport homecoming. ...

This Onion article does as good a job demonstrating the absurdity of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, as anything I've read: Gay War Hero Awarded Posthumous Dishonorable Discharge At White House Ceremony WASHINGTON—In a solemn ceremony held in the White House Rose Garden Monday, recently outed Iraq War Casualty Sgt. Maj. Michael Delacroix—a highly decorated career serviceman with an impeccable 22-year record—was posthumously stripped of his military honors and dishonorably discharged from the U.S. Army. "For giving his life in the line of duty and selflessly serving his nation while being gay, Mr. Delacroix will be exhumed from Arlington National Cemetery and relieved of his rank and all attendant benefits," U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert Gates said during the ceremony. "We also ask that his mother return the American flag that was given to her at his funeral." A Pentagon spokesman said that Delacroix's cause of death—sniper fire while attempting to save an injured Iraqi boy—will be changed to AIDS in the official record. On the other hand, if they'd left him in the ground, then all the other skeletons might have seen their marriages dissolve and their heterosexuality weaken, too. ...

WASHINGTON - The Army is mailing out thousands of letters to survivors of soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan, asking what it can do to better help them, even years after the deaths of their loved ones. The Army recognizes it’s made mistakes in some of its dealings with the families of fallen soldiers, Col. Carl M. Johnson, director of the Army’s Casualty and Mortuary Affairs Operation Center, said in an interview. And the letter, a copy of which was obtained by The , encourages families to be candid in their comments and suggestions. ...

Army sergeant from Cecil dies in Afghanistan By Brent Jones August 25, 2008 An Army staff sergeant from Rising Sun died last week of undetermined causes while on patrol in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said yesterday, a loss the eight-year soldier's wife says will leave his squad without one of its finest mentors. Staff Sgt. David L. Paquet, 26, a 2000 graduate of Rising Sun High School in Cecil County, died Wednesday at Combat Outpost Vegas. His wife said that he collapsed and that she was awaiting autopsy results. "He always gave advice, told them what to do," Katie Paquet said of her husband and his soldiers. "He had a big heart and was there for people when they needed him. And then, on the other side, he was a completely funny guy." Sergeant Paquet was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 26th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas. He joined the Army after graduating from high school. A year after he joined the service, Sergeant Paquet and his future wife were set up on a date by a friend. Katie Paquet said she was drawn to her future husband's blue eyes and that they enjoyed watching sports and traveling. The couple married in 2002. "As for his personality, all that I can say is he's one in a million," she said. "There'll never be another Dave." Sergeant Paquet's death has not been ruled a Casualty, and the Department of Defense said the incident is under investigation. "He d ...
