From a journalistic standpoint, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan may become known as the time and place where documentary film making excelled as a way to tell of the service and sacrifice of U.S. military personnel and their families. If so, special praise will be bestowed on filmmakers Jon Alpert and Matthew O'Neill for bringing the wars not just into the living rooms of Americans but into their hearts as well. First came their "Baghdad ER" which showed the frantic efforts of medical personnel to save wounded Americans. Then, teamed with James Gandolfini (star of "The Sopranos") their "Alive Day Memories: Home from Iraq" presented U.S. personnel who talked of their injuries, their survival and their determination to regard each day as a gift. And now the latest effort by Alpert and O'Neill brings us the grieving and heroism of family members of military personnel. Set for broadcast Monday by HBO, "Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery" is an emotionally powerful look at the families who visit that part of the famed Cemetery where those killed in Iraq and Afghanistan are laid to rest. The war in Iraq must have by now touched everyone. Every town. Every family. The death of a Marine from my town certainly hit close to home. He graduated from the same high school the same year as my stepson. He lived only a few blocks away. More than all of that though, his mother cared for my youngest daughter in her preschool days. It was a shock when it happened. And it was a shock too when Leesa Phillipon showed up in HBO's thoroughly arresting "Section 60: Arlington National Cemetery" tonight. She seems a kind of oracle when she appears near another mother and tells of how they'll grow closer to their fallen sons as the years go by. Those things happen in Arlington, she told me. "It's a place that embraces the people who come there," she said. "These are America's sons and daughters. Just a whole generation." She said she happened to be in Arlington visiting the grave of her son Lance Cpl. Lawrence Phillipon when Matt O'Neill walked up with his camera. The woman with whom she spoke had a son who died the same time and same day as her own son, but in Afghanistan. The families got to know eachother so that they spent Christmas together. At the top my list of places to visit when we were in Washington DC was, believe it or not, the Arlington National Cemetery. I was not expecting a lot of visitors here in this sprawling military Cemetery, not expecting many people would care enough anymore these days about people who died in wars long past. Justice Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons No. 285 is holding a bus trip to Arlington Cemetery for a wreath laying on the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier . The trip will also visit the Korean War Memorial and the Viet Nam War Memorial.  The trip is Saturday, Sept. 20 .
