By SUSAN SCHROCK Arlington — One key to reducing ozone pollution is to turn off heavy-duty diesel vehicles whenever possible, city officials said. The Arlington City Council approved an ordinance last week that restricts how long vehicles that weigh over 14,000 pounds, such as tractor-trailers and buses, can idle if they are not in traffic, keeping passengers comfortable or performing critical job functions. The city targeted heavy-duty diesel vehicles because they produce roughly 15 times more emissions than light-duty gasoline vehicles, chief transportation planner Alicia Winkelblech said. Why the ordinance City officials said the ordinance’s goal is to raise awareness about ways to reduce air pollution. Arlington’s ordinance, which still requires a second vote, would be in effect between April 1 and Oct. 31 each year, which is typically when ozone pollution levels are highest. A large percentage of North Texas’s ozone pollution comes from vehicle and construction equipment, and the region has not been able to meet federal ozone standards for decades, officials said. Participating in the region’s air-quality initiative will enhance the city’s eligibility for transportation-related grants, officials said. Who will be affected Heavy-duty diesel vehicles will not be allowed to idle longer than five minutes. These include school and passenger buses, garbage trucks, dump trucks, tractor-trailers, and fuel and beverage delivery trucks ... Source: www.star-telegram.com --- 12 hours ago

Normal 0 A long-time former Town Meeting member claims a story about a drunk driving arrest in Arlington is a “total misunderstanding” and contained false information about his affiliation with U.S. Senate candidate Ed O’Reilly. According to police reports and Sullivan, he was driving on Mass Ave in Arlington at the time of the accident. He said he reached over to turn the radio volume up, saw that a tractor-trailer truck had stopped in front of him, and slammed on the brakes. However, he didn’t hit the brakes soon enough to not rear-end the truck. “I bumped the truck,” he said. “It had no damage but my car had damage.” The police showed up shortly after the accident. Because Sullivan didn’t have all of his paperwork in order for his new car, which he had bought the week before, he believes the police became suspicious. “You have a seven-day grace period to get your registration and inspection,” he said. “I had the paperwork in my car but because of the holiday weekend, the registry was closed.” Sullivan denied he was drunk at the time of the accident and was joking around when he said “osifer” to the arresting officer. “I know a lot of police officers in town,” he said. “I, kidding around, say ‘osifer.’ I said it by accident. I misspoke and the officer thought I was drunk. I wasn’t. I have a cold and I had a couple of mentholated cough drops in my mouth, which smell like alcohol.” Sullivan also said he never told police he was O’Reilly ...
