From NBC/NJ's Athena Jones ABINGTON, Pa. -- Barack Obama applauded his running mate’s performance in last night’s debate, saying that the "Scranton boy done good" and contrasting his rival's positions in the debate with the latest job numbers. In a speech before some 6,000 people gathered at a windy high school football stadium in a Philadelphia suburb, Obama mentioned a “noteworthy” moment from the St. Louis match up between Biden and Sarah Palin : when the Governor said the Democrats’ economic policy would kill jobs. “I wonder if she turned on the news this morning, because it was just reported that America has experienced its ninth straight month of job loss,” he said. America has lost more than three quarters of a million jobs since January, and Obama is hoping to convince concerned voters that a vote for his ticket is a vote for more jobs. He said his economic policies would create millions of new jobs, including five million in clean energy technology and two million in infrastructure. He repeated a common attack line that he and Biden use to cast McCain as out of touch, saying that only two weeks ago the Arizona senator was still saying the fundamentals of the economy were strong. ”When Sen. McCain and his running mate talk about job killing, that’s something they know a thing or two about, because the policies they’ve supported and are supporting are killing jobs in America every single day, " he said. ...( read more ) ... Janet Napolitano was elected as Arizona Governor in 2002, and reelected in 2006. In November 2005, Time magazine named her one of the top five U.S. governors. A little know fact about her: In 1991, Janet Napolitano served as the attorney for law professor Anita Hill when Hill testified against U.S. Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas... ... Unlike the two most recent presidential elections, when there were stark differences between the candidates' views on climate science and policy, this year three of the four candidates for president and vice president agree with the scientific consensus on climate change. The lone skeptic on human-caused warming of the four major party candidates is Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, who happens to be on the ticket with one of the most tenacious advocates for climate science and policy measures in the U.S. Senate - John McCain of Arizona. Keep reading for a full assessment of the candidates' take on climate change science, and whether it is natural or man-made. The week before his convention in St. Paul, Republican presidential nominee Sen. John McCain was staring at the prospect of Mayhem on the Mississippi. Conservatives, not overly enamored with the senator from Arizona in the first place, were threatening to revolt. They shot down the trial balloon of Sen. Joe Lieberman with all the efficiency of a surface-to-air missile. But then McCain did something unexpected, shocking even. He chose Sarah Palin to be his running mate. The wildly popular Alaska Governor has only been in office since December 2006. She was largely unknown to the Axis of Evil (aka the Washington elite, the media elite, you get the picture). But not to the conservative wing of the Republican Party. Palin's selection ignited an enthusiasm among delegates that exploded during her triumphant acceptance speech at the Xcel Center. Originally, McCain and Palin were expected to campaign separately, as is the ... Source: www.salon.com --- 4 days ago
Because we support female candidates for office just because they are women, no matter how stone-cold bat shit faux-folksy or parsel-tongued, whose politics and very presence embody the promise of equal opportunity, civil rights, diversity, and compassion , it's tempting -- if not encouraging -- to look ahead to 2012 (assuming that we are not, by then, swimming with the polar bears). One blogger (handle: "betterdonkeys") at MyDD has done just that, offering this speculative list of nine possible (remotely and otherwise) female candidates for president, four years hence. (This is not about replacing -- kinehora, ptui ptui ptui -- Obama, by the way. Just a pretty glimpse of what the field could look like.) On MyDD's roster's top tier: -- Kathleen Sebelius, whose term as Kansas Governor is up in 2010, at which time she could have a shot at Sam Brownback's Senate seat -- and at being Kansas' first Democratic senator since the publication of "The Grapes of Wrath" (1939). -- Janet Napolitano , whose term as Governor of Arizona ends in 2010. Did somebody say Arizona? You betcha. MyDD favors a "clash of the titans challenge to McCain for his Senate seat; if she could defeat him, her star would certainly rise to the top of 2016 contenders." -- Hillary Rodham Clinton, ladies and gentlemen. Also: Claire McCaskill , Amy Klobuchar , plus a handful of other fun-to-think-about long shots (including Darcy Burner ). Not that all of these women wo ... Maybe Sedona does have mystically restorative powers. After a difficult couple of weeks, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin looked relaxed and comfortable this morning when she left Sedona and flew with her family and advisors to St. Louis for her hotly anticipated debate tonight with Sen. Joe Biden. Palin, along with her husband, Todd, daughters Willow and Piper and baby son Trig, had spent 2 1/2 days at the peaceful Sedona compound of John McCain and Cindy McCain, set in the scrubby hills and red rocks of Arizona’s famously spiritual destination. During that time, Palin kept a low profile. She gave a confidence-boosting interview to talk show host Hugh Hewitt, whose sympathetic queries may have helped her gain equilibrium after damaging interviews with network anchors Charles Gibson and Katie Couric. (How could she have gone wrong with Hewitt, who lobbed softballs such as “Do you think the mainstream media and the left understands your religious faith, Governor Palin?”) She spent much of her time in Sedona rehearsing for tonight’s big moment onstage. Her sparring partner was McCain senior foreign policy advisor Randy Scheunemann. The campaign released a photograph that showed Scheunemann and Palin, in a baseball cap, behind wooden lecterns, set up on what appeared to be the banks of a stream on the property under some leafy trees. On Wednesday, reported a campaign spokeswoman, Palin began her debate prep in the morning, and at 7:30 p.m. t ... Source: www.salon.com --- 11 days ago
John McCain has long been notorious for his temper. In the past, he gained national attention for dropping the "F" bomb on a colleague, and in a 1999 editorial, his home-state newspaper, the Arizona Republic, declared : If McCain is truly a serious contender for the presidency, it is time the rest of the nation learned about the John McCain we know in Arizona. There is also reason to seriously question whether he has the temperament, and the political approach and skills, we want in the next president of the United States. There was even media speculation during the lead-up to the first presidential debate Sept. 26 that Barack Obama would try to goad McCain into losing his temper. Tuesday, during a question-and-answer session with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register in Iowa, that infamous McCain temperament seemed to surface. The entire interview is fascinating, with McCain appearing far less restrained and carefully managed than he has for much of the campaign. McCain became testy when asked about whether Sarah Palin had enough experience to assume the role of president if necessary, answering, "So, with due respect, I strongly disagree with your premise that she doesn't have experience and knowledge and background." McCain added that Palin has "been a member of the PTA, been a Governor, been a mayor." Then, seeming to realize that he'd lost his cool somewhat, McCain said, "I'll stop there." He went on anyway, however ... Source: www.huffingtonpost.com --- 7 days ago
John McCain is the Eddie Haskell of politics. So observes Bob Neuman, aide to the late great Arizona Congressman Mo Udall, in Amy Silverman's devastating article on John McCain. Silverman, a fifteen year veteran of Arizona newspapers and long time McCain observer, arrays stunning evidence in support of the claim. Again and again, the article documents in stunning detail what a self-aggrandizing two-faced liar McCain is. A particularly salient incident is his ambush of Rose Mofford, who in 1988 became the first female Governor of Arizona when then Governor Evan Mecham was impeached. Mofford had served as secretary of state, and far from being a hyper-partisan Katharine Harris, was a modest, conservative Democrat who would not look out of place at any church bake sale across America. As Silverman points out, Mofford lacked any ambition to run for re-election and was hardly a partisan warrior. That didn't stop McCain from savagely ambushing her when she came to Washington on a meet and greet just days into her administration. To cut a long story short, McCain gleefully fed questions on esoteric topics to a Republican on the committee that Mofford appeared before. The idea was to embarrass her. He was being a "gotcha Senator." McCain happened to have lunch that day with Pat Murphy, publisher of the Arizona Republic and, until he witnessed McCain's duplicity first hand, a friend and admirer of the Senator's. "During lunch, McCain said ... Source: www.nydailynews.com --- 10 days ago

A day after Gov. Janet Napolitano said her office was down nine positions, for a savings of $800,000, she announced a new hire . The Governor was making the point that her office is sharing in the belt tightening that she has imposed on state government . The state is contemplating a budget deficit that she says could climb as high as $800,000. (Lawmakers say it's more like $1 billion.) Ray Borane , the Governor's new border and immigration policy adviser, has come on board at a $40,000 annual salary. But it won't come out of the Governor's Office budget, said spokeswoman Jeanine L'Ecuyer . Half will come from the Arizona-Mexico Commission and the other half from a fund dedicated to border items at the state Department of Emergency and Military Affairs. So that means the $800,000 in savings stands. As for those nine vacant positions: The Governor's staff says it's now more like eight and a half, since former border-policy adviser Marco Lopez still has a hand in Ninth Floor operations, even though he has now moved over to run the Department of Commerce. Lopez will advise on non-border-related international issues. ... Oct 18, 2008: Women For Obama Day of Action! at Obama For America CD 7 Office/People for Grijalva HQ
