"Loops and Introspection" would be a more descriptive alias for Italian-born, London-based Alessio Natalizia, who records as Banjo or Freakout , but I guess it wouldn't have quite the same ring. Banjo or Freakout's dreamy rendition of Burial 's Untrue standout " Archangel " is only the latest in an impressive, enigmatic series of covers posted in the past year or so on Natalizia's blog , including songs by Pavement, Battles, Feist, Kate Nash, and the Queers. For "Archangel", Natalizia moves from dubstep to the kind of percussive art-folk wilderness otherwise inhabited by Grizzly Bear, singing the "loving you... holding you..." lyrical snippets with his own whispery harmonies. It's lovely and atmospheric, music for the home rather than the club. MP3:> Banjo or Freakout: "Archangel" (Burial cover) Not that Banjo or Freakout's output has been limited to covers. Natalizia has also been posting originals to his blog at a Bradford Cox-like pace, ranging from drifting ambient pieces to fuzzy guitar pop. Pained vocals and rough-hewn acoustic guitar bring to mind Shocking Pinks' " Emily " or any number of Elliott Smith records, while if you only heard the watery sound effects and electronic loops you might think the song was in ethereal post-Cocteau Twins territory.
