This is the 69th year of The Minneapolis Aquatennial which is held the third full week of July. The dates for 2008 are July 12-27. This postcard was published in 1950. The long canoe race has not been held since 1960. There is an interesting article " Aquatennial Canoe Derby Was Test Of Stamina " about the race and Gene Jensen who was a race winner four times in 1948, 1949 1950 and 1960. The description on the back of this postcard is as follows: The Mando-Aquatennial Canoe Derby, co-sponsored by the Minnesota and Ontario Paper Co., is held in conjunction with The Minneapolis Aquatennial, the nation's greatest summer festival. It is now the world's greatest canoe racing event and attracts top-flight canoeists from all parts of the United States and Canada. Starting at Bemidji, Minnesota the course extends 450 miles down the challenging, unpredictable and ever-changing Mississippi River to end at Minneapolis. Aquatennial History ...

Every July, Minneapolis goes a little bit water crazy. Since 1940, the city has celebrated the "ten best days of summer" with a tribute to its lakes and rivers known as the Aquatennial , and this year's festival - to be held July 12-27 - promises to be one of the wildest ever. The festival kicks off in a sporting fashion with the Plaza Tennis Tournament and the Life Time Fitness Triathlon, which will draw some of the most talented athletes in the world. Things get progressively zanier from there, with the Land O' Lakes sandcastle-building competition, the Summer Sounds Gala, and a beach bash with music, food, and games. The most highly anticipated event of the festival, however, is the milk carton race in the waters off Thomas Beach in Lake Calhoun, in which contestants build boats out of milk cartons in the shape of dragons, pirate ships, and the like. The first ship to cross the finish line without sinking wins the hearts and minds of a beautiful city. As with most things in life, style counts for a lot, even if you have to abandon ship mid-voyage. Starwood has several Minneapolis properties, including the stylish W Minneapolis - the Foshay . ...

I don't have any pictures unfortunately but the fireworks were great! I've lived here for 4 years now and have never seen this fireworks show. At first I didn't know what it was and that it existed and then since I found out I either didn't figure out when it was happening or was out of town. Well this year Kevin and I made sure that we knew when it was and that we were going to be around. So we went to the 13th floor of the Mayo building which happens to be our normal 4th of July fireworks watching spot (has a great bug and crowd free view of the Stone Arch Bridge) and watched the show. It didn't disappoint. It was huge and the grand finale was we imagined it would look like if an entire fireworks factory blew up. Don't miss it next year! ...

I collect all sorts of pins, buttons, pinbacks, etc, mostly from Minnesota celebrations including Defeat of Jesse James Days, Bullhead Days, the St Paul Winter Carnival and the Minneapolis Aquatennial .  The Aquatennial started in 1940 and has had solid annual celebrations accept the 1945 and 1946 during the war.  As I write this, there are 66 pin years available and I have 60 of them.  These are very interesting to view.  I especially love the re-occurring skipper wheel theme.   ...
