Apple has patented the OS X Dock, nearly a decade after the operating system made its public debut with a new slant on the taskbar. The late arrival isn’t due to a lack of initiative, however. Apple applied for the patent December 20, 1999, and it was approved by the US Patent Office only yesterday.read more [...] ...

While not a particular fan of Dell's, I have nothing against them. I am on my 1 year old HP dv9500t, a 17" Core2Duo 2.2Ghz, with dual 120GB HD's (a nice feature of the modern 17" laptops is the dual HD's), 2 GB of memory and 32 bit Vista Home Premium. I also have a 4 year old HP zv5330us 17" with a P4 and XP Home. It is outdated, but just won't die. I have never had a problem with Vista, and have it not only on my laptop, but two desktops, and have yet to have a crash on any of them. Neither have I ever had a dreaded blue-screen. I did have a "black screen" on one desktop as the result of not paying attention and loading an XP video driver on my first Vista machine, still early in it's release (June, 2007). I marked that one down as a dunce operator error. It required a recovery from the clone drive. I clone all of my drives, and never store data on the same drive as the OS. Data is actually on a Network drive, and if I travel, on an external drive. Having run XP for 5 years, I have found it stable, and having run Vista for a year and half, found it stable as well. Dell and HP are both notorious for loading up their machines with "bloat ware" which they refer to as "trial" or "promotional" software. At least you can order your Dell without the nortorious malware "suites" by Norton and McAfee which are known to slow down a PC significantly. You asked about AVG, and I used to run AVG Free extensively, but have switched to Avast!, also ...

Nearly nine years after filing for a patent on the Dock in OS X, it's finally been awarded to Apple. Steve Jobs is listed as one of its three inventors. Besides the general idea of a userbar with "a plurality of item representations" that consolidates features like "launching and managing running applications," the patent focuses particularly on the Dock's magnification feature that makes icons bigger as you sweep by them with a cursor. What this means for other dock programs, like Stardock, is unclear. Though Apple can be quite aggressive with its patents, it's uncertain whether Apple would even bother going after generic dock programs. Either way, Apple is no doubt happy to have this one in their pocket after a long, long wait. [ USPTO via Slashdot ] ...

Filed under: Utilities , Windows , Macintosh , Linux , Apple Apple has received a patent for the dock utility for launching applications in OS X. Yes, the dock has been around for the better part of a decade, but Apple applied for the patent back in 1999 and didn't receive it until this week. The patent describes an interface for consolidating frequently used items in a "userbar." It also covers the way that items are magnified when you scroll your cursor over them. In other words, it looks like Apple may be able to go after the makers of ObjectDock , RocketDock , sTabLauncher , Avant Window Navigator , Cairo Dock and others. Sure, those applications may not steal any code from Apple, but they're based on the same concept. Now, I'm not saying Apple shouldn't have been able to patent the dock concept. I'm not going to take a position on that, one way or the other. But this is the sort of thing that can happen when it takes the US patent system 9 years to rule on a patent application. Since the release of Mac OS X 10.0 in 2001, the Dock has been one of the most prominent features of operating system's user interface, serving as a centralized launch pad for applications and document files. Now, nearly a decade after filing for a patent on the OS X Dock, it has finally been awarded to Apple under the title user interface for providing consolidation and access. ...

Filed under: Analysis / Opinion , OS , iPhone Steve Ballmer is imitating his CEO predecessor by suggesting that Apple separate its iPhone hardware from OS X, according to Ars Technica . Nokia leads the smartphone market today with about a 30 percent share, he said. "If you want to reach more than that, you have to separate the hardware and software in the platform," he said in an discussion forum with the Churchill Club, a Silicon Valley business and technology group. In 1985 , Bill Gates approached Apple (and its then-CEO, John Sculley) with prospects in hand to convince it to license Mac OS to third-party vendors. As we all know, that didn't happen (at least not with Microsoft as a partner ), keeping the bond tight between Apple hardware and software. Microsoft wound up doing it themselves with Windows. The idea that Ballmer thinks other companies should be more like Microsoft isn't shocking at all; in fact, what else was the man supposed to say? Like Jobs with Apple, Ballmer's talks and interviews wield a great deal of influence on Microsoft's stock price. If he said anything other than what he did, MSFT would have taken a hit. As CEO, that's unconscionable. Continue reading Ballmer channels 1985, suggests Apple split iPhone hardware and OS Read  |  Permalink  |  Email this  |  Comments ...

Netbooks running Apple’s OS X have been done before, so this software install hack takes it one stage further by putting Leopard on a touchscreen Gigabyte M912X . Since Leopard has inking facilities built-in - including an on-screen keyboard and handwriting recognition courtesy of InkWell - it looks to be a very successful transplant. Check out the video demo of the Gigabyte touchscreen MacBook after the cut The work of Apple fancier Stuart Lowe, based in the UK, I’m having trouble finding specific details of how he achieved it all. However any of the generic guides to getting OS X running on non-Apple hardware should work, such as this one . Stuart now has a compact convertible MacBook with an 8.9-inch touchscreen, 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor and 160GB hard-drive. There’s also plenty of scope for an integrated HSDPA module. It once again raises the question: why aren’t Apple making something like this themselves? Click here to view the embedded video.
