Over at another blog I've been managing recently on the topic of time management, we've had a host of guest bloggers contribute great suggestions on being more productive, staying more organized, and better managing our time and attention. Julie Morgenstern, a widely followed author, reminded us never to check email in the morning. Linda Stone, a former executive at Apple and Microsoft who speaks often on managing our attention so we don't get too distracted, suggested taking more time for reflection. And David Allen, who has his own cult following of productivity Junkies, reminded us not to get too attached to technology. Those are just some of the many helpful hints they've offered up. If you haven't been following the blog, it's worth checking out. Now that the experts have spoken, it's our turn. I spoke with someone the other day that gave me a tip I'm going to try to implement myself: Create a stop-doing list, along with a to-do list. Make a list of the things you're going to try to stop doing, and check that as often as the list of things you have to do. It's just as important to not getting overloaded with tasks that are unimportant, that others could be doing, or that just shouldn't be taking up your time. Now, I'm asking you: What are the time management secrets you put to use every day? How do you manage the email deluge? What are the ideas you implement to get from your coffee-fueled commute and back home again to the peopl ...

People used to wait in line at consumer electronics stores because they truly, deeply, fervently wanted to be first to score a hot new gadget. Now? The early birds in line several days early outside Apple Stores for the most part aren't Apple Junkies. They're media-seekers who desperately want attention , not an iPhone. Would-be media disruptors are happy to provide. Check out this post from New Zealand: "Sorry for the video quality but I wanted to get this online before the mainstream media does." How very subversive of you. This is all great for Apple — you don't see any Greg Packer types pretending to be in line for an LG Dare . ...

Filed under: Retail , Cult of Mac Apple Junkies who live in Colorado Springs, CO used to have to drive about 75 miles north to Denver to visit either the Park Meadows or Aspen Grove Apple Stores. Now they finally have an Apple Store of their own at the Promenade Shops at Briargate , which opened on Saturday, September 20th. Reader Denny noted "Firefighter Memorial Ride happened to be the same day and organized from the parking lot. At first, I thought Apple had a new market in Firefighters and Harley riders." Denny moved to Colorado Springs just three weeks ago from Orlando, FL, where he had his pick of three Apple Stores. Denny's Flickr slide show can be viewed here . TUAW reader Marc mentioned that "Colorado Springs being a smaller market, the turnout wasn't as great as for some other openings -- there were about 40 people in line when I arrived about 8:30 am and another 40 or so filled out the line by the 9:00 am opening time." They may have T-shirts available for a while at that store... Marc's Flickr slide show is here. Thanks to Denny, Marc, and Randy for their coverage of the event. Filed under: Enterprise , Software , Universal Binary Great news for any virtualization Junkies out there (I know I'm not the only one). VMWare Fusion 2.0 has just been will be released Tuesday! Fusion 2.0 is a free upgrade for all existing 1.x customers, and it adds more than 100 new features and enhancements. [ Note: VMware's product manager told us an official announcement time of 12:01am Tuesday morning, EDT; however the final version of Fusion 2.0 has not appeared on VMware's website yet as of 12:45am, as pointed out by Jonathan 'Wolf' Rentzsch. -Ed. Update: as of 1 am EDT, the Fusion page has been revised to include the 2.0 upgrade information. -Ed. ] I've been using Fusion 2.0 since it first entered beta during the summer and have been very impressed with its performance and feature set. In addition to TUAW, I also write for Download Squad , where we've been a little bit Chrome-Crazy for the last couple of weeks. Although I have access to a few Windows machines, because all my tools for writing and screenshots and graphics are on my Mac, I've been using the beta and release candidate versions of VMWare Fusion 2.0 for all of my testing. Fusion 2.0 features lots of improvements and new features, but the most significant feature, from a technology-pushing perspective, is probably the ability to run Leopard Server as a virtual machine. When Apple made the decision to allow for server virtualization right after Leopard's release ...

As technology aficionados lined up around the world today to buy Apple's iPhone 3G , Portfolio.com decided to find out how simple gadgets invented centuries ago stack up to the tricked-out electronic toys of the 21st century. We asked readers, which one is best? Bells and whistles were by no means a predictor of success. Though 22 percent of the 214 voters selected the iPhone , the lowly pencil came in a close second with 19 percent of the vote. Sharing the third-place berth were two gadgets with very little in common: the always-beeping BlackBerry and the strong but silent Swiss Army knife. The top four gadgets left the others in the dust: G.P.S. attracted only 8 percent of voters and the Taser (coming to a New York police station near you) won a mere 7 percent. Perhaps as an indication that the iPhone's older cousin, the iPod, is here to stay, the Walkman came in last, taking just 6 percent of the vote. It was tied with--wait for it--the abacus. But as the pencil's success indicates, some gadgets never go out of style. The Results: iPhone.................. 22% Pencil................... 19% BlackBerry............ 16% Swiss Army Knife..16% G.P.S........................8% Taser......................  7% Walkman................. 6% Abacus.................... 6% - Caitlin Roman Related Links What's Good for Apple is Better for Everyone Else Survey Confirms iPhone Users are Hard-Core Internet Junkies A New Frontier for Mobile Phones ...

The Sonata, aimed squarely at audio Junkies, consists of a 2.1-channel DAB receiver (£299; $547), which offers 40-watts of amplification per channel and your choice of an upscaling 1080p DVD player or a Wolfson-DAC-loaded CD unit for another £179 ($327). The all-in-one Fusion (£300; $549) includes 30-watts per channel, an integrated CD player, DAB / FM tuner, USB port, an SD slot and a customized iPod dock (which is also bundled with the aforementioned Sonata). Both units are slated to hit the UK in silver and black, though the November-bound Fusion will get a jump on the Sonata, which hits in February 2009. Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 The measure of a successful technology product is oftentimes the number of applications developed for it. This is not a tried-and-true method, but it's a good eyeball test. Computer that have lots of software applications, game consoles that have lots of games and mobile phones that have lots of neat tools are oftentimes the ones that give you the most value. It's why we buy them. Apple has a different approach. Mac-aholics will buy the latest gadget or gizmo regardless of applications because that's what Junkies do. They need more. The iPhone, though, is getting some tracking from the mobile developer market -- maybe more traction than other phones. There are currently 1,001 software applications available for the iPhone. This is a really big deal for two reason: people love their Macs (see above) and they love to build applications , something they don't normally get to do with Apple products. Not all applications are created equal; however, Apple's brand is build upon personal communication and that means many of the best applications are being developed around that, which should make most folks happy (since only a few of us really want to have spreadsheets and document editing on their phones). ...

Blaise Zerega says long live the party line. Consumers who have downloaded some 60 million iPhone programs from Apple's App Store may soon be in for a treat. GIPS announced today that it's voice-over-internet-protocol technology is now available for developers to integrate into iPhone applications. Most of the coverage of VOIP in the mobile space tends to focus on placing voice calls over a smartphone's WiFi and thus avoiding hefty charges from carriers -- for good reason. But the opportunities presented to iPhone developers with VOIP technology from GIPS and others, means more mobile apps offering multi-person chat and videogames with in-game chat. While I haven't yet ventured into Kingdom Game , let me know if you think high-quality VOIP would help attract more peasants and make me a Ruler of the known world.   Related Links What's Good for Apple is Better for Everyone Else Survey Confirms iPhone Users are Hard-Core Internet Junkies Apple Makes iPhone What it Should Have Been All Along ...

This is big news for both music lovers and Apple Junkies. This was a huge demonstration of both one company’s clout overall and the sea [...] ...

Just as Google was an upstart 10 years ago and now is the dominant player in the search-engine world, Apple has reinvented the cellular phone market with it's all-in-one-gadget-you-can-call-mom-on. And now it appears that ten million people have joined the revolution of iPhone Junkies . Just as the Crackberry changed us into carpal-tunnel maniacs with our thumbs flying across keys smaller than we could have imagined they would hit, the iPhone has us fumbling across a bad keyboard and sending our messages with spelling only a third grader could love. But that hasn't stopped us. Ten Million. Think about that. In a mere 15 months they have not only dominated a market but changed how people communicate. While Google talked about a phone, Apple jumped up and applied their legendary industrial-design skills to give us a communication device. What they did on a business level is amazing. With one device, they entered and took over four markets...the PDA, MP3 Players, Smartphones and Wi-Fi Devices. They also introduced the mass market to cloud computing with the Mobile Me package. They have created a mini-economy by presenting application developers both a platform, market and storefront in the iTunes stores. Essentially, they have done in little over one year what every business aspires to do: become synonymous with the item they sell. And they did it in a crappy economy. If I sound like a zealot, I really am not. I am just an admirer o ...

For the past week, I’ve been talking your ear off (well, writing your eyes off) about my recent trip to New York Fashion Week …tales of interviewing Bobbi Brown , watching Oscar Blandi work his magic, hanging with hipster muse, Cory Kennedy , and generally living the glamorous life.
