Philippines auction site Auction.ph is planning to make the Apple iPhone 3G available on the Web site, but issues such as product sourcing and potential carrier partnerships remain hazy. In a press briefing Friday, Auction.ph --one of the country's pioneering auction sites--unveiled a special program to put the new iPhone for sale at an online auction. (Credit: Auction.ph) "It is a promo for our loyal users and online merchandisers," said Angelo Hernandez, public relations chief at Auction.ph. The Executive said Auction.ph will initially auction off one iPhone 3G unit, with a starting price of "only" 1 peso (2 cents), at bidding increments of 0.5 peso. Hernandez said the company expects a "lucky" bidder to snare the iPhone 3G --which goes on sale in the Philippines on Friday, August 22--at a cost far less than the announced price tag of the mobile device. The appeal of purchasing the phone on the site, he said, is that Auction.ph already has a "fixed" price range for the iPhone 3G, from 1 peso to 5,000 pesos ($110). The price range is considerably cheaper than the 30,000 (US$663) price tag of the iPhone currently offered in the local market, he added. Hernandez, however, remained mum on whether the Apple phone will be a regular item on the auction site. Although it has a substantial user base, he said, Auction.ph has yet to initiate talks on how it will source for iPhone units and on possible partnership with local distributors a ...

It's no secret that the MobileMe launch didn't happen as smoothly as Apple, or subscribers, would have liked. The service has been plagued by downtime, lost emails, and under-delivering on promised features. When you're faced with such a mess, what do you do? Free iPods for everyone? Rides for all on Uncle Steve's corporate jet? Sadly, no. But still, a free 60-day extension to most MobileMe users is nothing to sneeze at. According to an email MobileMe subscribers just received, Apple will be giving out activation keys good for 60 days of service to eligible customers. To find out if you're among the lucky ones to snag those sweet 60 free days, check out this Apple knowledge base article . If you're the type that likes Executive summaries, here are the salient points (though I question why you're using MobileMe if you're a high-powered Executive ): All active MobileMe members as of August 19th, 2008 at midnight Pacific Daylight time are eligible. If you are in a free trial period on that date, your free trial will be extended by 60 days (sweet!). If your account is set to expire soon, worry not, because you're getting the 60 days too (I feel like Oprah! "You're getting 60 days free! And you're getting 60 days free!"). The 60 days also applies to any upgrades you might have on your MobileMe account (like extra storage). This 60 days stacks with any other extension you might have on your MobileMe account (such as the thirty day bump ...

Shaun Nichols in San Francisco, vnunet.com , Monday 18 August 2008 at 22:44:00 Last of back-dating cases wrapped up The final case in Apple's back dating scandal has been settled. Former Apple general counsel Nancy Heinen agreed to pay the US Securities and Exchange Commission $2.2m and submit to professional sanctions. The settlement wraps up the remaining case in Apple's stock options back-dating scandal. The case surrounded a set of options granted to Apple executives, including chief Executive Steve Jobs, in 2001 that were later found to be back-dated in order to yield a better price. Apple conducted an internal investigation which indicated that, while Jobs was aware of the practice, he did not believe that it was illegal. Charges were never brought against Apple as a company, but the SEC filed charges against Heinen and former chief financial officer Fred Anderson in April 2007. By the time the charges were announced, Anderson had settled with the SEC leaving Heinen's as the lone case in the matter. In addition to the monetary penalties, Heinen will be barred from serving as an officer or director of any public company for the next five years and will be forbidden from appearing before the SEC as an attorney for three years. ...

Laura Holson of The New York Times has posted a very interesting article about Jon Rubinstein and how he's been working towards resuscitating Palm. Jon Rubinstein's presence at Palm is a great asset. If you'll recall from this TreoCentral article : Before Rubinstein joined Apple in 1997 as senior vice president of hardware engineering and a member of its Executive staff, Apple had just lost $816 million, and their profits were waning along with their reputation as an innovator. At Apple, Rubinstein was responsible for hardware development, industrial design and low-level software development. He contributed heavily to Apple's technology roadmap and product strategy. Finally, Rubinstein embarked on an extensive cost-cutting plan that axed both research projects and engineers. Expenses were cut in half. Holson mentions in the article how Palm has lost its way and how it has tried to innovate beyond the five-year-old Treo with little effect. From the article: Mr. Rubinstein, the Executive chairman, said he is convinced he can bring Palm back. ...

Filed under: Competitive strategy , Apple Inc (AAPL) , Nokia Corp. (NOK) , Palm Inc (PALM) Palm (NASDAQ: PALM ) is dead. That has been written before, but now the company needs an official funeral mass. According to The New York Times , "Palm's chief Executive, will announce the debut of a new smartphone primarily for business customers - the Treo Pro." The company also has several other handsets in development. Palm is now up against smartphone products from much larger companies like Samsung and Nokia (NYSE: NOK ). Not to mention the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) iPhone. In the last year, Palm had an operating loss of $105 million on a shrinking revenue base that fell to $1.32 billion. The company has $398 million in current and long-term debt. Palm is not going to make it as an operating company, but it might be a good licensing entity. That would involve cutting almost all of the company's staff and licensing its brand and product designs to another company, perhaps Samsung or LG. The Palm name still carries some modest weight in the U.S. Palm's revenue might drop to $100 million, but its costs would be negligible. It would, at least, make a profit, which is something that is out of the question with the company in its current form. Douglas A. The Beach City council marathon meeting, Monday, lasted almost 3 1⁄2 hours with two Executive sessions, for police and village personnel. When the regular session convened, council hired Jim Wood, of Massillon, as a part-time police officer. He will begin duties as soon as possible. Council members Marsha Lambert, Darold Willis, Don Tucker, Myron Allen and Dan Kloha voted yes for Wood to be hired. Francis Bailey cast the lone vote but refused to give a reason. “I don’t have to tell you,” Bailey said. Council asked full-time police officer Richard Schworm to patrol, beginning at 6 a.m., when school opened on Tuesday. Schworm said he was not aware school was opening and could not be at the bus pick-ups. Schworm works a full-time job in the Newcomerstown area. Village Administrator Terry Madden assured council he would be at the bus stops to make sure the children are safe. Madden said for years a police officer has been on duty during school hours. Council hired Jason Woodruff of Apple Creek as a full-time police officer at the Aug. 4 meeting. Woodruff has passed his physical and will begin his duties within the next two weeks. Police Chief Vern Book is still on medical leave.                                                                                                                                                           Village Council members will not be receiving an increase in wages after all. Council rescinded the passage of ...

A recent article in Businessweek discusses how Dell plans to make a second play into the MP3 space based on its recently acquired Zing software and the ex Apple iPod Executive, Tim Bucher, that came with it. The strategy that they are taking looks to drive the MP3 player market right into Dell's sweet spot, but the question is going to be whether they can produce an attractive player, and if they cannot what other ways could they take advantage of the market. Dell has a history of taking a trial run in a market, leaving and coming back stronger running back to when they first entered the laptop market. The failure of the first attempt caused them to post their first ever loss. They studied the lessons they learnt from this and re-entered the laptop market bigger and better. Since then they have had trial runs in the server, storage, workstation, printer, peripheral and leasing markets before re-launching to greater success after having learned the lessons needed. Typically the trial run has been with third party re-badging with the second slice being with their own designed equipment. That Dell has previously played in the MP3 market and is now re-entering suggests that they have a very good idea on how to make money. The crux of what has been made public to date is to create an open distribution system that multiple vendors can use. It sounds like they might be setting up a system where they build a wholesale media warehouse and ...
