Filed under: Competitive strategy , Apple Inc (AAPL) , Nokia Corp. (NOK) , Palm Inc (PALM) Palm (NASDAQ: PALM ) is dead. That has been written before, but now the company needs an official funeral mass. According to The New York Times , "Palm's chief Executive, will announce the debut of a new smartphone primarily for business customers - the Treo Pro." The company also has several other handsets in development. Palm is now up against smartphone products from much larger companies like Samsung and Nokia (NYSE: NOK ). Not to mention the Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) iPhone. In the last year, Palm had an operating loss of $105 million on a shrinking revenue base that fell to $1.32 billion. The company has $398 million in current and long-term debt. Palm is not going to make it as an operating company, but it might be a good licensing entity. That would involve cutting almost all of the company's staff and licensing its brand and product designs to another company, perhaps Samsung or LG. The Palm name still carries some modest weight in the U.S. Palm's revenue might drop to $100 million, but its costs would be negligible. It would, at least, make a profit, which is something that is out of the question with the company in its current form. Douglas A. The Beach City council marathon meeting, Monday, lasted almost 3 1⁄2 hours with two Executive sessions, for police and village personnel. When the regular session convened, council hired Jim Wood, of Massillon, as a part-time police officer. He will begin duties as soon as possible. Council members Marsha Lambert, Darold Willis, Don Tucker, Myron Allen and Dan Kloha voted yes for Wood to be hired. Francis Bailey cast the lone vote but refused to give a reason. “I don’t have to tell you,” Bailey said. Council asked full-time police officer Richard Schworm to patrol, beginning at 6 a.m., when school opened on Tuesday. Schworm said he was not aware school was opening and could not be at the bus pick-ups. Schworm works a full-time job in the Newcomerstown area. Village Administrator Terry Madden assured council he would be at the bus stops to make sure the children are safe. Madden said for years a police officer has been on duty during school hours. Council hired Jason Woodruff of Apple Creek as a full-time police officer at the Aug. 4 meeting. Woodruff has passed his physical and will begin his duties within the next two weeks. Police Chief Vern Book is still on medical leave. Village Council members will not be receiving an increase in wages after all. Council rescinded the passage of ... A recent article in Businessweek discusses how Dell plans to make a second play into the MP3 space based on its recently acquired Zing software and the ex Apple iPod Executive, Tim Bucher, that came with it. The strategy that they are taking looks to drive the MP3 player market right into Dell's sweet spot, but the question is going to be whether they can produce an attractive player, and if they cannot what other ways could they take advantage of the market. Dell has a history of taking a trial run in a market, leaving and coming back stronger running back to when they first entered the laptop market. The failure of the first attempt caused them to post their first ever loss. They studied the lessons they learnt from this and re-entered the laptop market bigger and better. Since then they have had trial runs in the server, storage, workstation, printer, peripheral and leasing markets before re-launching to greater success after having learned the lessons needed. Typically the trial run has been with third party re-badging with the second slice being with their own designed equipment. That Dell has previously played in the MP3 market and is now re-entering suggests that they have a very good idea on how to make money. The crux of what has been made public to date is to create an open distribution system that multiple vendors can use. It sounds like they might be setting up a system where they build a wholesale media warehouse and ... Find more results for Apple Executive on RSSMicro.com |
