The Industry Standard posted an interesting article recently discussing the possibility of Apple releasing a mobile gaming platform. According to the writer, the circumstantial evidence points to Apple trying its luck with gaming once again. And while I think the company may want to do just that, it should attempt to make its way into the Console market. Will Apple's Console be this ugly? Nah. (Credit: Wikipedia ) I'm sure some are wondering what my justification for such a move would be considering Apple failed miserably in the Console market back in the mid-1990s with the Pippin, but let's not forget that it wasn't really an Apple product. Apple's Pippin was licensed to Bandai, a company that was trying desperately to get into the gaming industry. In essence, Apple envisioned Pippin to be a product that it could market and go above and beyond just gaming. In essence, it wasn't really an Apple Console. Regardless, it failed. Miserably. Fast-forward to today and the gaming landscape has changed. Today, the industry is booming like never before and it's rife with opportunity for any company that's willing to provide an experience that can eclipse that which we're enjoying right now. And as long as Apple plays by the rules it has played by for the past 10 years, there's no reason to suggest it can't be a success. ... ...

Everyone likes to talk about the battle between Microsoft and Apple on the OS front, but that seems like old hat to me. Sure, there's certainly a battle being waged in that space, but is it really as hotly contested as some want to believe? Call me when Mac OS X hits 20 percent market share. The Xbox 360 is the Apple TV killer (Credit: Microsoft ) But there is one battle raging between Apple and Microsoft that many people don't even see. No, it's not in the MP3 player market where the iPod reigns supreme, it's in the home entertainment business. More specifically, the battle being waged pits the Apple TV against the Xbox 360. Now I know what you're thinking -- "isn't the Xbox 360 a video Game Console and the Apple TV is a media device"? Yes and no. The description of each device may be correct, but the Xbox 360 description doesn't say enough about the Console. Aside from its gaming capabilities, Microsoft's product performs many of the tasks already found on the Apple TV -- streaming entertainment, music, movies and TV show viewing and a hard drive that can store your favorite material. And with an installed base of over 18 million that easily eclipses the Apple TV's 1.7 million installed base, there's no reason to suggest Microsoft can't win the battle and finally deal the Apple TV its death blow. And here's how it should do it: ... ...

Microsoft will be happy to learn today that it is considered to be a more innovative company than either of its key Console rivals, Sony and Nintendo. At least according to the readers of BusinessWeek, which placed Microsoft in 5th spot, ahead of Nintendo in 7th and Sony in 9th. Microsoft’s ranking was based on its search engine and touch-screen research – not the Xbox 360, nor the bloated Windows Vista. Microsoft was 5th last year too. Topping the poll of the World's 50 Most Innovative Companies was Apple, followed by Google, Toyota and General Electric. Sony raised its Game by one spot this year while Nintendo, demonstrating the power of the Wii, shot into 7th from last year’s 39th. So, do you think Microsoft is more innovative?-Martin Lynch [ BusinessWeek ] microsoft wii nintendo sony ...

Here's some big news for the guys planning to develop games for the iPhone . Unity Technologies has recently sent word that they will now support Game development for the Apple iPhone. A most interesting bit of news, given that Unity had previously stayed in the realm of Console machines . As Unity CEO David Helgason states, this move is hoped to signal their support for the gaming industry's ever-growing mobile environment: With iPhone support, Unity is poised to become the single source for Game developers who want to create best-of-breed, 3D-quality games that can be easily and quickly ported to all platforms, including consoles, devices, PC/Mac, and now, the iPhone. The past few months have been very generous to the iPhone's homebrew, with Apple releasing an SDK for third-party developers just last March. With Unity's announcement, the iPhone just might be looking to get more gamer-loving this time around. Drop by again in case we run into any more updates. ...

Nintendo undoubtedly made unconventional controls fun with the introduction of the motion-sensing Wii. Rumor has it that competing platform holder Microsoft is readying its transition to join the bandwagon, but Nintendo president Satoru Iwata was able to shrug off the rumored Xbox 360 Wiimote -esque controller as a non-threat. From a recently published interview seemingly directed at investors, Iwata expressed his confidence in the Wii's well established pedestal. He acknowledged the rumors floating about, saying he's seen a fan-made image of a Wii Remote-like controller. Nintendo's head honcho wasn't fazed, however, as he clarified that the white hot Console's makers would be more worried if the competition offers innovations which can outshine the Wii. Iwata explained: ...what matters to us is whether or not we can continue to constantly create and offer new surprises one after another. If we can, then (other company s attempt to launch Wii Remote-like controller) should not be a big threat. The efforts in this field to try to appeal to a wide variety of customers are something in which we saw potential early on and that we have been working on the longest, so there appears to be no reason whatsoever why we need to be concerned. Furthermore, Iwata pointed out that the video Game territory is risky. "It is becoming increasingly more difficult for new entrants," he said.  Apple may be trying to join handh ...

Sometimes I lie awake at night, thinking of the things that were not meant to be. Things like unicorns, holodecks, a third series of Spaced , and, of course, a laptop based on the Apple II platform. But thanks to the genius of modder extraordinaire Ben Heckendorn, one of those has stepped out of myth and into solid fact. Ben Heck, as he’s known to the technical cognoscenti, is the genius behind numerous works of video Game Console hackery, like the portable Atari 2600, the NEStari, and, most recently, the the PlayStation 3 Portable . Now he’s turned his attention to the classic computer of yesteryear, the Apple IIgs, which he’s modded into a notebook form factor . Using an original IIgs motherboard and RAM, the IIgs laptop has stereo speakers, a 15” LCD display, and, most importantly, can play Arkanoid II. There are also ports for floppy drive, mouse, and joystick. One side effect that us modern laptops may envy is the fact that the IIgs runs cool—as Heck puts it, “this machine gets about as hot as your average pocket calculator.” That’s right: it’s literally too cool for school. Granted, this sucker probably weighs considerably more than your MacBook, let alone MacBook Air. But if I could go back in time with it, I’d totally be the envy of everybody in my third-grade class. Look for a full “Making Of” piece at Heck’s blog sometime soon. In the meantime, hit the link above for all the pretty pictures. ...

Apple is fond of filing patents on things that tend to get geeks all hot and bothered. Last time I saw an Apple patent it had something to do with a mobile Game Console. Today another patent application turned up for a Wii style remote for the AppleTV. I have an AppleTV and that would make for a cool addition to a product just now becoming useful with the first day the DVD is out movie rentals. The filing is from way back in November of 2006 so we could be seeing it relatively soon. ... ...

Soaring Wii sales boosted the net worth of Nintendo founder Hiroshi Yamauchi by $3 billion last year, according to a new Forbes list of the richest people in Japan. The 80-year-old gaming magnate rose to first place, up from third, on the list with an estimated fortune of $7.8 billion, according to this Reuters report . Yamauchi became a principal owner of the Mariners in 1992 but sold his stake in 2004 to Redmond-based Nintendo of America. He still owns 10 percent of Nintendo, the shares of which have tripled since the Wii's launch. (No wonder Steve Jobs is looking into a Wii-like remote that could make the Apple TV into a Game Console ....) ...

Filed under: Cell Phones , Computers , Video Games , iPod , iPhone Could the iPhone and the iPod Touch be part of the next great mobile gaming platform? Game developers and Apple fans are licking their chops, awaiting the opportunities to create and play games on the go with these devices. And as Apple has already changed the way people everywhere listen to and collect music, we're sure they're equally excited about making an impact on the mobile gaming marketplace. According to the Industry Standard "A trademark extension filed last February with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office extends Apple's trademark in regards to: 'Toys, games and playthings, namely, hand-held units for playing electronic games; hand-held units for playing video games; stand alone video Game machines; electronic games other than those adapted for use with television receivers only; LCD Game machines; electronic educational Game machines; toys, namely battery-powered computer games.'" That's a mouthful, for sure, but it also points to Apple's renewed interest in the gaming arena, which is certainly hot, although competitive as all get out. This isn't Apple's first effort in gaming, but the last time the company tried to find its way with a gaming device was in 1996, during the non-Steve Jobs era. The device Console, called the Pippin, was a failure. Now the iPhone and the iPod Touch are flying high. Could this be the time for Apple to ...

A few days ago a rumor started that Microsoft were making a motion-sensing controller, codenamed Newton, that looked very similar to the Wii remote. Now fortunately I managed to resist making some stupid Isaac Newton joke in the title like: ‘New 360 remote isn’t down to earth’ or ‘360 Motion control, a bad Apple waiting to fall’. Ok enough with the the Newton jokes, they barely even make sense. Lets get this over and done with. For those of you who don’t know, the Microsoft motion sensing controller promises to have a microphone, speaker, A, B, X and Y buttons, a trigger and an analogue stick. Sound vaguely familiar to you? Of course it does, you can’t say motion sensing these days without thinking of the Wii and obviously this controller has similarities to Nintendo’s Console. Now I think if Microsoft release this controller, they will be maing a big mistake. Here’s why. The Wii has been a storming success, with casual and hardcore gamers buying the Console. Nintendo are in the money once again and Microsoft want to cash in on it. After all, Sony released the SIX-AXIS so why shouldn’t Microsoft join the party? What Microsoft don’t seem to understand is that the Wii’s motion controls, while making it stand out, are not the Wii’s only selling feature. As much as I try, I cannot think of a Game that has impressed me so much with its motion sensing controls, that I couldn’t play the Game without it (except Wario Ware). Very few W ...

The road to modern videogames is littered with the corpses of noble Game consoles who flew too high to the sun. Here are the 10 best under-achievers of all-time: Commodore 64: Forget a PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, or Wii - the Commodore 64 was literally the first living-room computer. At one point, the TV-enabled desktop held 40% share of the PC market, more than IBM and Apple. But it also doubled as a nifty Game Console, so much in fact that its library and third-party support rivaled that of the NES at one time, this despite being released three years earlier. Good times! Must-play games: Boulderdash, Defender of the Crown, Impossible Mission, Hardball, Ghosts & Goblins, Commando, Spy Hunter, Mrs. Pacman, Donkey Kong Sega Saturn: Though the short-lived Saturn would mark the beginning of Sega's hardware downfall, it was the system of choice for arcade junkies hoping to play Sega's stellar first-party efforts at home. It was also the first fifth-generation Console to introduce gamers to true 32-bit graphics. While lacking the third-party support that both the PlayStation and N64 enjoyed, it was an imaginative system all the same. Must-play games: Daytona USA, Virtua Cop, Virtua Fighter, Sega Rally, Panzer Dragoon, Nights TurboGrafx-16: Sadly, the TurboGrafx-16 was a victim of poor localization. Despite boasting an eclectic, innovative, and well-received library of games, the system failed to appeal to Americans due to non-existen ...
