From an alleged leaked shot of iPhone firmware 2.2 , we see that Apple has tweaked the browser ever so slightly (old version left, new version right). The Google search magnifying glass icon is gone in favor of a separate Google search bar (similar to Safari desktop). Technically it won't save any button presses over the old version, but luddites will be less likely to type "Google.com" into the address bar with every search. The price for this fancy design? The refresh button bites it. [ iPhone Atlas via Wired ] ...

Google continued its offline access march Sept. 15 by launching Google Gears for Apple's Safari browser on the Mac OS X operating system. The upgrade means you can now access sites that support Gears, including Google Docs, Picasa Web Albums, Google Reader, Zoho office apps, WordPress and the YouTube uploader via Safari. Google Gears, which lets users store data locally in a database, is an important part of Google's strategy to help users access their Docs, Zoho documents and other data when there is spotty Web access or even no Internet connection at all. Offline access is pretty much table stakes at this point in the business world, particularly with all of the business travelers flying to and from conventions and conferences. Now Gears' features -- including the ability to create desktop shortcuts for Web sites, as well as geolocation and "Blobs," which are useful for uploads of large files -- all work in Safari. According to Net Applications, Safari's browser market share increased from 5.09 to 6.37 percent from October 2007 to August 2008. That makes Gears support for Safari important in my book. What's next from Google regarding Gears? Well, I know lots of Googlers use Macs and many of them flat-out love all things Apple, so I'm willing to wager we'll be seeing Gears support extended to Apple's iPhone next. Anyone agree or disagree? ...

Newly-published patent applications may point to enhancements in Safari 4 or other versions of Apple's web browser. Originally submitted earlier this year, the filings depict two different browser-based technologies, beginning with the concept of a visual history. Apple notes that most browsers display history as a straight list of pages, something which may be "confusing." The company also com... ...

Apple are planning a Safari update to take on Google’s new Chrome browser, with a non-linear history that would make tracking website visits more intuitive. That’s the suggestion from a new Apple patent application , which discusses a non-linear, timeline threaded display of a user’s browsing history that uses context and a timeline rather than simple forward and back. In a way, Apple make it sound like Visual Voicemail for your history. “A problem with this linear history is that users can visit a large number of web pages, which are confusing to view in a linear history, and the forward and back buttons are inefficient and cumbersome way to navigate through multiple web pages. Further, the problems of a linear history are not confined to pages accessed via a web browser, but also apply when a succession of data of other types is accessed over a period of time.” Apple patent 20080235632 In fact, Apple don’t limit the non-linear system to just webpages. In their explanation of the system they suggest it could be applied for managing “a succession of data of other types … accessed over a period of time”. As a paradigm shift it’s analogous to the switch from traditional voicemail (dial in, listen to messages in the order they were left) to Visual Voicemail on the iPhone: users can pick and choose their entry point into their history, and see the movement in a threaded, contextually-linked layout. As with any patent, there’s no telli ...
