WTF?! Law & Order 's Richard Belzer got himself into trouble on Wednesday when he allegedly grabbed an employee at an NYC Apple store by the shoulders, shook her, choked her and screamed that he needed help. The victim Milan Agnew called 911 and even filed a harassment complaint with the LAPD, which resulted in a minor violation. Belzer was not charged with a crime and told officers that he was "just joking." Agnew is upset that the actor was not charged with the assault. Her grandmother, Anita McKnight, stated: "She told me, 'Nana, he didn't just touch me, he choked me and really scared me.' My granddaughter is petite, just 5-feet-2 and she's a dancer so she doesn't have much body to her. Where does this man come off putting his hands on her?" According to a witness, Belzer walked in and out of the store three times and began pacing up and down the block. "If it was one of us, we'd be locked up right now," said onlooker Jonathan Fox. After the incident, Belzer was seen waving to people and shaking hands. Weird. [ Image via WENN .] ...

The New York Times on iPad: Twice the fun Many tout the upcoming Apple iPad as the end of the netbook. That’s hard to believe for one simple reason: typing on the thing is going to be difficult. Unless there is some real input “magic” on the device that has yet to be revealed, I see it more as the savior to the newspaper and magazine industry then I do a netbook killer. And that’s not a bad thing. However, when Steve Jobs digs in his heals, he can be the most stubborn of oxes. Build a netbook? Apple? No way. Too pedestrian, for bottom feeders. Not for a grand design, game changing company like Apple. Thus Apple iPad, slotted between the iPhone and MacBook. A bona fide mobile devices company is born. Well, at least the marketing speak is. I don’t think the booming netbook industry is facing doom anytime soon. Evolution perhaps, as manufacturers figure ways to build hybrid devices (such as the Lenovo S10-3t tablet netbook) that capture the best of both the traditional netbook keyboard along with the ease-of-use of touch screens. So, here are my top reasons why the Apple iPad won’t kill the netbook and 3 reasons why it will save newspapers. Apple iPad won’t kill the netbook because… 1. It has no answer to the speed of a physical keyboard Yes, it does offer a virtual keyboard. But how do you type quickly on that? It will require 2 hands which means the iPad must be sitting on a horizontal surface, and would require someone using it to b ...

Yesterday, Apple launched the latest version of the iPhone OS 3.2 SDK (beta 4) . As it was just a beta update from 3 to 4 it wasn’t expected that there will be many difference, and so far this holds true. However, a couple of things noticed in the gesture support show that a couple of new commands are included allowing for longer presses on the screen. The actual list comprises of 3Tap, LongPress, Pan-Mix, Pinch-In, Pinch-Mix, Pinch-Out, Rotate-Anticlockwise, Rotate-Clockwise, Rotate-Mix and Swipe-Left in which the 3Tap and LongPress are new. It is unknown – currently untested – on what these two new gesture functions can do, but it seems like another set of handy features allowing quick access to sub menus maybe. Perhaps we will see the two new gestures being used on the Apple [AAPL] iPhone 4G and/or the Apple iPad when it launches in a few weeks time. Note that the Apple iPhone 4G hasn’t been made official yet but following tradition it is expected a new iPhone will be launched in a few months time. Apple is reorganizing the App Store with new eBook categories and application flags in anticipation of the iPad launch. According to Forbes, Busted Loop uncovered the information as part of its new AppSlice project, which aims to help customers locate the best applications. Apple has reportedly designated about 20 "top-level" categories for books, including "Fiction & Literature", "Reference," "Romance," "Cookbooks" and "Comics & Graphic Novels." Below those categories lie more than 150 sub-categories, including some very specific genres, such as "Manga" under "Comics & Graphic Novels," "Special Ingredients" under "Cookbooks," and "Etiquette" under "Reference." Some sub-categories, such as "Fantasy" and "Science Fiction & Literature," even have sub-sub-categories ("Historical" and "Paranormal," for example.) There are also two sections for "Erotica" books; one under "Fiction & Literature" and one under "Romance." AppSlice data indicates that only 16,700 iPhone apps have been certified as iPad-compatible so far. Applications appear to be given iPad approval if they perform an optional iPad compatibility test during the app upgrade process. It's not clear if Apple will "bump up" the remaining apps before the iPad launches. According to Busted Loop cofounder Josh Kastelein, Apple has created software "flags" including a general "iPad Wi-Fi" flag and a more specific "iPad 3G" to distinguish apps that will work on the different kinds of ...

Consumer Reports has announced the results of its annual survey to rank computer manufacturers on their after sales care. Manufacturer scores are based on an annual survey from the Consumer Reports National Research Center this past January of over 7,000 desktop- and laptop-owning subscribers to Consumer Reports. Respondents weighed in on the ability of manufacturer's tech support to solve their problems, the communication and knowledge of phone support staff, how long they were placed on hold, and the quality of the company's online support. The results show Apple with a huge lead in both Laptop and Desktop categories. The company received a reader score of 86 in the laptop category followed by Lenovo with 63. Acer/Gateway/eMachines performed the worst with a reader score of 39. Apple received an even higher score of 87 for Desktop care followed by Dell at 55. Acer/Gateway/eMachines again performed the worst with a reader score of 39. Read More [ via Slashgear ] ...

What’s the world coming to? In a move that would seem fit for April’s Fools, Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer recently complimented Apple on the way “they allow people to monetize and commercialize their intellectual property”. Is this a sign of the presumed partnership between Microsoft and Apple, in order to defeat Google? Ballmer is known for his criticism against Apple and for laughing at the iPhone, but Microsoft must have felt the breath of Android in its back and closing in. The new approach goes perfectly with the rumours claiming the iPhone will give up Google as its default search engine, replacing it with Bing. The Seattle Times questioned Ballmer regarding his praise towards Apple, but the CEO refused to comment on that. As the tension between Google and Apple increases, an alliance of the latter with Microsoft seems plausible, but in what way, we wonder… [via Phonedog ] Permalink | Comments | Author ) Tags: Apple Microsoft partnership , Microsoft CEO , Steve Ballmer , Steve Ballmer praises Apple ...

Barnes & Noble has officially announced that the company intends to compete with Apple’s own iBookstore app by releasing an iPad-optimized version of B&N eReader , an app that gives iPhone and iPod touch users access to all of the content available in the company’s eBookstore. We’ve been getting lots of questions from customers, so we wanted to confirm that we will soon be adding a new B&N eReader for iPad – continuing to fulfill our promise of providing consumers any book, any time, any where. Designed specifically for the iPad, our new B&N eReader will give our customers access to more than one million eBooks, magazines and newspapers in the Barnes & Noble eBookstore, as well as the existing content in their Barnes & Noble digital library. (That includes eBooks and content customers have downloaded to their nook™ eBook reader.) As many of you already know, Amazon also already offers an iPhone eReader similar to Barnes & Nobles’, and you can be sure that they too are considering or have already started developing an iPad version. It will be interesting to see if Apple allows B&N eReader for the iPad, or any other third-party iPad eReader for that matter, into the App Store, especially since Apple’s iBookstore is being offered as a downloadable app and won’t actually be shipping with the iPad. It would probably be in Apple’s best interest to allow third-party iPad eReader apps into the App Store, not only to save face, but also to p ...

The very first TV ad for the Apple iPad went live during the Academy Awards 2010 on Sunday, but what’s more interesting is that Steve Jobs was also present at the Oscars. He might have been on the red carpet to promote the new product, but maybe he’s a movie freak as most of us are. In case you didn’t dig the first Apple iPad ad, there’s always the parody made by the folks of neo-fight.tv. The clip is available below and it’s quite a funny piece of work. Also, in case you’re wondering, the original Apple iPad ad uses the song “There Goes My Love”, sang by The Blue Van, as its background. Apple announced the iPad as a magical and revolutionary new product, their most advanced technology ever, and their attempt to grow the widely popular iPhone OS into the troubled tablet marketplace. It becomes available for pre-order this Friday, March 12 and goes on sale on Saturday, April 3 (in the US, international launch in late April). But should you buy one, and if you should, when? Let’s take a look after the break! Should You Pre-Order iPad Wi-Fi on March 12? If, for you, the iPad is the “next big thing”, the ultimate couch and coffee computing appliance, the best way to read everything from email to ebooks, browse the web and your photos, enjoy music and movies, use apps and play games — both current iPhone apps and a glorious new class of iPad apps to come, then yes. Yes, you should order on March 12 and make sure your shiny new iPad is bought and bound and arrives at your door on April 3, or is waiting for you to pick-up at your local Apple Store day and date. What else can we tell you, you decided to buy the moment Steve Jobs put sneaker to stage at the iPad event in February. And you don’t even care to wait a month for the 3G version, do you? Sigh. Yes, you should pre-order on March 12. If this isn’t you, however. If you won’t buy without touching it first. If you won’t take the iPad on faith alone and want a chance to handle it first, to try it out, then don’t pre-order. Wait. If you’re really super-eager, Apple has an ...
