The Western genre continues its resurgence with this drama from actor-director Ed Harris. Based on Robert B. Parker\'s novel, Appaloosa follows a pair of lawmen (played by Harris and Viggo Mortensen) who must unite over their town\'s crisis as they\'re divided over their mutual love of a woman (Renée Zellweger). ...

I recently posted 10 Movies to see this Fall. One of those 10 movies was Appaloosa starring Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris. Why am I sucker for Westerns? Is it because I grew up in an age where young boys watched Westerns and re-runs of Bonanza? Is it my fascination of an era in our nation that we know very little about? Not sure why, but I knew I would enjoy any movie starring Viggo, Ed Harris, and Jeremy Irons. ...

They're marketing the Western "Appaloosa" as being in the tradition of "Unforgiven," which is almost completely wrong. The movie isn't a downer, and it isn't revisionist. In fact, it's made expressly for the lover of the movie-Western tradition, somebody who can recognize and enjoy its riffs on well-known genre titles. ...

Essentially a buddy movie in which the cops tote shotguns and travel on four legs instead of four wheels, Appaloosa takes the traditional notion of a lone lawman fighting injustice and turns it successfully on its head. Based on a spritely western by detective novelist Robert B. Parker, creator of the Spenser series, the film follows the exploits of Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen), gunslinging partners in a ''peacekeeping'' business who are hired by town officials to keep... ...

Editor's Note: As with many of our Ten and Five articles, this article does contain spoilers. You've been warned, partner. While Westerns may be a rare thing in theaters these days, luckily we've had a few in the recent years that were good. Joining that list is the Ed Harris ... ...

I had been intrigued about the movie 'Appaloosa' since I read about it in the run up to the Toronto Film Festival. The western, starring Viggo Mortensen and Ed Harris, was getting a fair amount of positive feedback from many critics from around the country. Being a fan of the western genre, there was little doubt that I wanted to see what all the fuss was about. The movie is based on the 2005 novel by Robert Parker by the same name. Virgil Cole (Ed Harris) and his sidekick Everett Hitch (Viggo Mortensen) come to the city of Appaloosa to rid the it of Randall Bragg (Jeremy Irons) who has made the city lawless with the help of his following gang of thugs. In the subplot, Allie French (Renée Zellweger) catches the eye of Everett and briefly the movie looks to have the makings of a love triangle. The movie is very picturesque with ample scenery and works as a period piece. The film is somewhat derivative using scenes you will probably remember from other western films you know and love. What fails in the movie is the poor third act. The movie seems to build up to a plateau but fails to deliver a knockout blow in the end. 'Appaloosa' is worth seeing but only would recommend it at bargain matinee prices or for rental on DVD. Final Grade: C+ read more ...

See Trailers Below (Best Syndication News) The new film “Beverly Hills Chihuahua” was the winner at the box-office this weekend, beating out last week’s winner “Eagle Eye” (see the movie trailers below). A lot of new movies opened on Friday including “Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist”, “Appaloosa”, “An American Carol” and “Religulous” (see below). The lost dog must rely on her new found dog-friends to help her get home. While fighting off dog-nappers who want to take her for ransom, Chloe meets up with Papi (voiced by George Lopez), a male Chihuahua who falls in love with her. read more ...

Film Rating: C I never thought a film with at least two guns present in every frame could be so...quaint. I would use a stronger word in place of quaint, like boring, dull, drab, lackluster, or lifeless, but I'll admit that despite its 'quaintness,' Appaloosa isn't an entirely wasted effo... ...
