Security vendors Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, Secure Computing and Sophos have acquired many companies in 2008, consolidating the security market amid an economic downturn. Symantec acquired MessageLabs, SwapDrive, AppStream and Vontu; McAfee acquired Reconnex and Secure Computing; Secure Computing acquired Securify; Sophos acquired Utimaco; CA acquired IDFocus; and Trend Micro acquired Identum and Provilla. Here's a rundown of these significant security acquisitions. - The downturn in the financial markets, a pending recession and tight credit have done little to impede the appetite of security vendors to acquire companies and consolidate the market. Security vendors Symantec, McAfee, Trend Micro, Secure Computing, CA and Sophos made no fewer than 11 significa... ... Source: weblog.infoworld.com --- 54 days ago

The streaming technology of AppStream, now part of Symantec, reduces administrative overhead, costs, maintenance, and security concerns associated with managing applications and software on multiple endpoints. Its pull-based, on-demand software distribution platform combines the benefits of server-based computing (self-service access and centralized management and control) and distributed PC computing (disconnected application use and distributed processing), providing a "best of both worlds" solution. Software deployment and management via streaming is perfect for remote delivery because it only provides the application functions that an end-user needs, when those functions are needed, rather than delivering the entire application unnecessarily in advance. Applications become highly portable between machines and do not conflict with each other or with pre-existing, conventionally-installed software. read more ... Looking to "redefine endpoint virtualzation," yesterday Symantec announced that they bought connection broker software vendor nSuite Technologies. Known mostly in the medical field, nSuite's Desktop Connection Broker product manages ICA or RDP connections to virtual desktops and to Terminal Server / Citrix sessions. They also have a single sign-on solution and a rudinmentary desktop shell management product with Proximity Printing. Symantec bought Altiris way back in January 2007, adding a whole slew of capabilities to their bag including Altiris' application virtualization product called SVS. In April 2008, Symantec bought AppStream, adding a streaming capability to their SVS product. Since then, we learned at BriForum that Symantec has created a new group within the company called "Endpoint Virtualization." (Watch a video of Symantec's Brian Duckering talking to Brian Madden about this at BriForum 2008.) When writing about VDI over the past six months... ... Source: www.it-analysis.com --- 3 days ago
By: Michael Warrilow , Director , Hydrasight Posted: 9th October 2008 Copyright Hydrasight © 2008 Advertisement: Symantec has been a very busy vendor of late. Some recent examples: Definitive agreement to acquire MessageLabs —a trusted provider of managed email security services to many organisations. In fact, MessageLabs, which is based in the UK, claims to have 19,000 customers in 86 countries. Symantec will, of course, help extend MessageLab's reach into USA. More on that in upcoming research. Acquisition of multiple niche virtualisation vendors —including AppStream and nSuite. As mentioned in a recent Hydrasight report, we believe Symantec is becoming increasingly positioned as a frontrunner in the ability to provide secure and operationally-efficient heterogeneous administration of enterprise endpoints—be they ‘thick’ or ‘thin’ client, mobile and/or virtualised. This is in addition to acquisitions such as Vontu, Altiris and Veritas among many others. To put it simply, and humourously, this is not your grandparent's Symantec. It is also why, for quite some time, I've referred to them as Symantec Corp. In 2006 Hydrasight was critical of Symantec Corp’s lack of focus on integration . At the time we noted the importance, and potential value to the ITO, of greater attention by software vendors to integrating IT management functions from three critical yet distinct perspectives . Namely, (1) user interface, (2) management data and ... Source: www.brianmadden.com --- 31 days ago
An industry colleague, Sven Huisman, from VirtualFuture.info and his comrade, Matthijs Haverink, have posted up version 2.0 of their Application Virtualization comparison chart After reviewing the contents it seems that Sven and Matthijs have put together a pretty comprehensive chart on the top appvirt vendors and their products in this space. Sven does say that the Symantec AppStream and SVS products are bundled together as this is the most commonly used combination. If you all have some other products that you don't see make sure you check the products that didn't make the cut. I'm sure Sven and Matthijs would appreciate your feedback as well for the next version. Great job and thanks guys for putting this together.Cheers ... Source: www.chip.co.id --- 57 days ago

The application virtualization and streaming startup Endeavors Technologies problems seem never ending. From May 2006 to October 2007 , when it was still called Stream Theory, the company was involved in patent lawsuits with Microsoft (after the Softricity acquisition), Citrix, AppStream and Exent. In May 2008 , it mistakenly announced the advent of a new Microsoft licensing (SPLA) which allows 3rd parties to stream Office. And last Friday the company suspended its share from the London Stock Exchange detailing a difficult financial situation: The Company announced on 14th February 2008 that it had anticipated completing a major funding round during the first quarter of 2008 and a Prospectus proposing a placing and open offer was in final draft form. However, financial market conditions at that time were not favourable and the Company had not received commitments from potential placees to the level that the Directors considered necessary to maintain existing operations and finance the planned growth, although the process was still ongoing. The Company subsequently, having reviewed the alternatives, proposed a new funding initiative based on attracting private and institutional investors using a combination of convertible loan notes and ordinary shares. The first two stages of a three stage process were successfully executed and the Company held a general meeting at which shareholders approved the changes necessary to meet the requireme ... When Symantec made its first acquisition in the virtualization space, buying Altiris in 2007 , the strategy of the company wasn’t exactly clear. Altiris was mostly known for its management suite so the Software Virtualization Suite (SVS) product could easily be put in end of life. But when Symantec also acquired the application streaming startup AppStream in 2008, an already tested and appreciated addition to Altiris SVS, it was clear the company focus on the virtualization market. While the customers were waiting for an application virtualization and streaming solution resulting from the merge of two above, Symantec surprises buying a third firm, nSuite, for an undisclosed sum. nSuite offers several products including a VDI connection broker called DBC . With its acquisition Symantec clarifies that it doesn’t just want to deliver the applications but also the virtual desktops. The approach is interesting but seems still incomplete. If the company really wants to dynamically provision the whole computing stack it still misses the control of the virtual machines. It wouldn’t surprise too much if Symantec would announce the acquisition of a hypervisor (and there are not many still available on the market at this point). ... Source: 4sysops.com --- 95 days ago
Two weeks ago I reviewed Symantec’s application virtualization solution Altiris Software Virtualization Solution (SVS) . In that review I described how virtualized apps can be created, I explained the layer concept, and I outlined how layers can be activated locally or remotely via the command line. Symantec offers a more professional way to deploy such virtualized apps: the Altiris Streaming System. Streaming means that only those parts of an application that are actually required to run the functions accessed by the user are transmitted to the client. Symantec purchased AppStream some month ago and renamed their streaming solution. It is a bit strange that the new name contains “Altiris,” because this is another company recently acquired by Symantec. It seems Symantec wants to keep the well-known Altiris brand alive. Like AppStream, Altiris Streaming System 5.2.2 allows you to stream not only virtualized Altiris applications (SVS apps), but also “ conventional applications .” The corresponding packages have to be created with the Streaming Composer (a tool that comes with the Streaming System). There are three ways to package conventional apps, i.e. programs that are not virtualized. You can import an MSI file, track the application’s installation procedure, or create snapshots before and after the installation of the application. I won’t discuss streaming of conventional apps in this article because I want to focus on application vi ... Source: infraops.wordpress.com --- 54 days ago
With Symantec’s purchase of AppStream, the application virtualization story is starting to get more complicated. If you’re a long time SoftGrid/App-V fan, you should read this story. It sounds a lot like the old days. As Microsoft’s product begins to retreat back to the machine-centric model, Symantec’s AppStream duplicates some of classic SoftGrid’s best (IMO) [...] ...
