There are many factors that could be seen as impediments to the adoption of "cloud computing" architectures. One of them is the assumption by some suppliers that organizations are going to leap with both feet into running important applications offsite somewhere in the cloud. These folks haven't learned from what has come before -- service bureaus and application service providers to name a couple. Being able to manage these remote resources clearly is another issue. Hyperic started down the path to offering a solution back in July (see the post Hyperic CloudStatus for more information). Well, the good folks at Hyperic are at it again. This time, they're expanding the scope of CloudStatus to include Google's App Engine. Here's a... ...

I have just uploaded a new ActionScript 3 reference / online documentation API to Google App Engine. Basically, the service takes an ActionScript 3 class name (or a fragment of a class name) and returns the URL for the online documentation for the specified class. For example: http://as3reference.appspot.com/getapi?version=flex3&api=String returns: {"items": [ {"path": "String.html", "name": "String"}, {"path": "mx\/utils\/StringUtil.html", "name": "StringUtil"}, {"path": "mx\/validators\/StringValidator.html", "name": [...] ...

In order to allow parties positioned outside the Googleplex to contribute knowledge to a single source, Google assembled the framework for Knol . It’s had a mixed response . Now the company is offering the Google Cookbook built specially for App Engine developers. With the Cookbook, users can add “recipes” to the mix in a series of 11 categories that anyone can access, learn from, use, comment on and provide a 1- to 5-star rating for. And if they manage to construct a piece of code they find valuable in one application or another, they can offer it up to the masses in kind. The old give-take model enacted once more, in short. At the moment the Cookbook is comprised of just several brief notes and lessons. Some categories are yet to show one entry. And a few have been published by Google’s own Marzia Niccolai, the member of the App Engine Team. (Niccolai writes on the App Engline Blog that a Google engineer by the name of Amaltas Bohra created the Cookbook.) But it will presumably grow soon enough, what with the increasing attention and interest given to the App Engine since it debuted earlier this year. And as it does expand with time, the option to give feedback will help organize the database and ensure that a decent level of quality is maintained. The better the submissions, the greater the praise. And vice versa. The “busiest” segment at present is the label sitting atop the list, Datastore. Nearly a half-dozen contributors h ...

Data checks in... but it won't check out! No, not really; data management is just more of a pain than you might expect. To use Google App Engine today, you need to use a Python API to export from its proprietary data store. But soon, Google says, the situation will get a lot easier. ...
