Of the eighty or so cars displayed for the first time at the Paris Show, at least thirty of them have been developed with lower fuel consumption and emissions in mind. From city cars, to futuristic concepts and useful family cars to sports saloons, hybrid luxury cars and even supercars, the industry's need to drastically reduce CO2 was tangible. Now that the media days are over and the doors are open to the public it's time to round-up what's what in green terms in Paris. Small is beautiful Regardless of fancy new technology, if you want to save money on fuel and reduce your car's effect on the environment then the most effective step you can take is to downsize. That word was being bandied around with Aplomb in the Paris show halls with the launch of a raft of all-new superminis making the trade-in less of a painful experience. Honda's new Jazz for instance actually compares very well to cars from the class above in terms of space and practicality, while Mitsubishi's facelifted Colt and the compact Suzuki Alto/Nissan Pixo twins are also worthy small cars. It's the cute new Ford Ka and Toyota's absolutely tiny iQ that stole the headlines though, and for good reason. These are clever new city cars that appeal on an emotional level too. Hybrid power Hybrids are huge news in the USA right now, with nearly 350,000 sold in the last 12 months and even more on the cards for this year. European sales of hybrid vehicles are more modest, but wit ...

Given that the term anti-semite is thrown around with Aplomb on this site, would it be possible if some of our more frequent abusers of the term provide a definition for it? As I recall when the term racist is used precisely it refers solely to those who believe in the biological inferiority of certain races (and how that sits in with science based explanations that predict that Africans might be genetically predisposed to turn out running champions is glossed over) or support... ...

My favorite living portrait artist Drew Friedman painted this incredible piece for a New York Observer article on the "Weirdest Presidential Race of the 21st Century." From The Observer: Leonard Nimoy approves of Barack Obama’s emotional detachment and logical approach to campaigning. “He is measured and stable,” said Mr. Nimoy, who played Mr. Spock on Star Trek, and who has supported Mr. Obama since they first met about a year and a half ago at a small Los Angeles fund-raiser. “It’s true that he has an intellect that works for him, he handles difficult problems with Aplomb. Reliability and stability are very important assets in this race, in these particularly volatile times.” Mr. Obama, as far as anybody knows, does not greet strangers with a cloven V salute, practice debilitating neck pinches, bleed green or have a constitutional incapacity to fib. But his methodical, unflappable style and otherworldly resistance to overt displays of emotion—not to mention his temperamental inability, or refusal, to connect on a visceral level with working-class voters—makes him, by contemporary candidate standards, downright alien. That’s usually not a good thing. Yet, with less than a month until Election Day 2008, the Vulcan is winning. "Be Logical, Captain!" Previously on BB: • Drew Friedman: George W. Bush as The Joker • Drew Friedman: Barack Obama portrait • Drew Friedman's Old Jewish Comedians • Drew Friedman, comic artist: Get Illumina ...

Brothers Sisters brings a bucket of awesome to the table when someone finally – finally! – calls the family on their tendency to, shall we say, overshare at the most inconvenient times. Okay, we don't want to get our hopes up....but this Tim Burton-directed Alice in Wonderland which will combine live action with performance-capture "technology" (meep!) is beginning to sound kinda awesome. In addition to Mia Wasikowska (from HBO's In Treatment) being cast as Alice, and Johnny Depp signing on as the Mad Hatter, The Hollywood Reporter reports today that Anne Hathaway, fresh off all her good reviews for Rachel Getting Married, has signed on to play the White Queen while Helena Bonham Carter will play the Red Queen. Good for Anne Hathaway! Not only has she handled a difficult time in her personal life with grace and Aplomb in interviews, but she's doing the smartest thing possible: making good movies for people to talk about instead (it worked for Nicole Kidman, too). As for Mr. Burton's new production, we eagerly await casting news on who will play the Cheshire Cat. Is Jack Nicholson available? ...

"Cold in Hand" by John Harvey; Harcourt ($26) A decade ago, British author John Harvey ended his popular and critically acclaimed series about police detective Charlie Resnik with the evocative "Last Rites" (1998). Except for a couple of supporting appearances in Harvey's other novels and several short stories, the Nottingham detective has been quiet, enjoying his jazz collection and a new life with colleague Lynn Kellogg. An older, but no less active Resnik makes a most welcomed return in the outstanding "Cold in Hand." On the surface, it is a comprehensive police procedural with several investigations juggled with Aplomb. For all its suspense, "Cold in Hand" is equally an emotionally laden novel that delves into life changes, grief and revenge. ...

Highland thing Dog Soldiers, showing Thursday October 16th on five at 10:00pm This 2001 British horror thriller with comic overtones is pretty full-on all the way and a high-class act. Written and directed with Aplomb by Neil Marshall , a British squad - with limited ammunition - is sent on a training mission in the Scottish Highlands against a Special Operations squad. To their shock, the British squad come across the bloody remains of their colleagues, and there are fierce howls in the night sky. As the soldiers beat a hasty retreat to a farmhouse, it's clear that vicious werewolves are on the prowl. Can the soldiers survive until dawn? Highly recommended. Did you know? Although the film is set in Scotland, it was actually filmed in Luxembourg. View the full review Get a reminder when Dog Soldiers starts... View a trailer of this programme ...

Stanford has been wondering whether Alex Loukas would ever live up to his incredible potential. The junior finally did it against Arizona when the Cardinal were down to their third quarterback and their last chance. Toby Gerhart dived across the goal line for a 1-yard score with 25 seconds left, capping an improbable last-minute drive led by Loukas in Stanford's 24-23 victory over the Wildcats on Saturday. Aaron Zagory's extra point provided the decisive margin for the Cardinal (4-3, 3-1 Pac-10), who got their third victory in four games with a comeback led by Loukas, a remarkable athlete who ran and passed with equal Aplomb during his high school career in Illinois. He struggled to earn playing time as a quarterback at Stanford, going 1-for-7 this year in brief action, and the Cardinal even lined him up as a receiver several times. ...
