We've been hearing noises that Aol has re-worked its hiring process to be more like Google's. You know -- more and longer interviews, skills tests, bizarre questions, etc -- "Basically creating a grueling process," says one gossiper. Anyway, we haven't been able to confirm all that ("We don't comment on internal policies like hiring practices," say our friends at Aol PR), but what we have learned is pretty interesting. A well-placed source tells us that these days, Aol CEO Tim Armstrong approves every single new Aol hire. Tim learned this habit from Google cofounders Larry Page and Sergey Brin, who insisted on OKing every new Googler through the first 10,000. Tim's got a lot of approving to do! According to internal documents we obtained not so long ago, Aol plans to spend $50 million on opening "hundreds" of new local news blogs before the end of this year. As we profiled in our Never Mind the Valley series last month, New York is increasing its stronghold on the east coast startup scene. The city's rich media and international business ecosystems make it the perfect launch pad for startups looking to leverage these markets. One other reason the city has seen successful growth of entrepreneurship is the holding company Betaworks , which shows no signs of slowing after raising $20 million from Intel, Aol, RRE Ventures and several others. Sponsor It is a little harder to place a label on Betaworks compared to other similar entities that some would call incubators. The important thing to know is that Betaworks considers itself a holding company and will not only invest in companies but will hold and operate some of them as well. Having previously raised $8 million in 2008, the company has put their money to good use; Betaworks' history includes helping start companies like Bit.ly and Chartbeat , while investing in other real-time Web apps like Tweetdeck , and helping in the sale of others like Summize, which was acquired by Twitter in 2008. Needless to say, the company seems to know which horses to bet on, which is likely the reason why several corporations and investors teamed up to refresh their capital. Along with Intel, Aol and RRE, investors Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Softbank and The New York Times Company all contributed to help Betaworks keep moving forward. The real-time Web is a t ...

What is Aol going to do with Bebo? The web portal acquired the UK social network a couple of years ago, looking to make a huge dive into the media-sharing trends that were gaining at the time. While social media sites and services are still looked upon as having a great deal of potential for generating revenue, the actual execution of monetizing a networking hub is sometimes a far more difficult task. This looks to be the case with Bebo, but that wouldn’t be the first time for Aol or a social networking site to face the dire struggles of quickly-moving trends. TechCrunch speculates that Aol may be better off abandoning Bebo all together, instead of selling it, as the cost of purchasing and running the site may be more than Aol bargained for. With an acquisition price of $850 million, the merge came at a heightened time of interest in social networking as big business. MySpace had already been acquired by NewsCorp, Facebook had received interest and investment from Microsoft, and Google had made its own moves into the social networking realm–YouTube, for one. The desire to get a slice of the social networking pie was something all the major players had given way to, with a growing interest in its advertising potential. With Bebo having a hefty stronghold in the UK and a growing presence in the US and other countries, it seemed clear as to why Aol chose Bebo as an acquisition target. The social network was third behind MySpace and Fac ...

Editor’s Note : This guest post was written and reported by Steven Rosenbaum, the CEO of Magnify.net . Today, the world of music, film, and the internet converges on Austin, Texas for what is fast becoming one of the key the places to launch new software products. For the folks at Aol, South By Southwest—know also as SXSW—will be a debutant party for Aol’s new Seed form of journalism . Aol has it’s hopes pinned on that fact that SXSW will be the perfect place to both introduce the new Seed content machine to a large audience and test the concept of mixing freelance and pro-journalists to create a huge amount of original content. Seed has been operational for a few months now, but SXSW will be it coming out party, according to former New York Times writer Saul Hansell who is now the Program Director of Seed. How’s this all going to work? Well, fielding an army of freelancers to cover SXSW’s 2000 bands is certainly a baptism by fire. Aol solicited freelance writers on its music site Spinner. Those interested in contributing were redirected to Seed, where they signed up. Hansell asked for work experience, music tastes, and clips. He says: “I can tell you now that we didn’t read the clips. We looked at these things to see if people can follow directions and if they didn’t write us 1,000 words when we asked for 100. And that was the criteria.” Next, each of the more than two thousand bands that will play at SXSW were assigned to a Seedst ...
