METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with generalized Anxiety were randomly assigned to two groups equally, the medication group treated with anti-Anxiety drugs and the acupuncture group with "Jin's three-needling". The treatment course was 6 weeks. The clinical effects were evaluated with Hamilton Anxiety scale (HAMA), clinical global impression (CGI), and treatment emergent symptom scale (TESS) before treatment and at the end of 2nd, 4th, 6th week of the treatment course. The concentration of 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) in platelet, and plasma levels of corticosterone (CS) and adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) were measured with high performance liquid chromatography-electrochemical detection (HPLC-ED) method before and after treatment. RESULTS: The clinical effects in the two groups were equivalent, while the adverse reaction found in the acupuncture group was less than that in the medication group (P < 0.05). The platelet concentration of 5-HT and plasma ACTH level decreased significantly in both groups after treatment with insignificant difference between the group (P < 0.05). The plasma ... Nothing in recent memory changed federal politics more than the vanquishing of deficits a decade ago. The age of multi-billion-dollar surpluses, ushered in by Jean Chrétien's Liberals, gave Canadian politicians new options at home and bragging rights abroad, said an article at Macleans.ca on May 8. Canada morphed from fiscal basket case to bastion of balanced books. Given how central that boast has become to selling Canada, you'd think the prospect of a return to red ink would prompt alarm. Yet as a slumping economy makes a deficit look possible again, the experts are surprisingly blasé. "I must confess," shrugs Jeff Rubin, chief economist at CIBC World Markets, "I don't see this as the great calamity some economists do." Actually, it's hard to find one who sees it that way. "If Canada slipped into a deficit," says Douglas Porter, BMO Capital Markets' deputy chief economist, "it would be much more a political issue than an economic issue."Presiding over a dip back into deficit could rob (Prime Minister) Harper of this traditional Tory brand advantage. So he has to be hoping the Canadian economy weathers the current U.S. downturn well enough that Ottawa's balance sheets don't take a beating. The numbers suggest it will be a close call either way. In his February budget, Finance Minister Jim Flaherty predicted a slim $2.3-billion surplus for the 2008-'09 fiscal year, based on a planning assumption that Canada's gross domestic pro ... Q. When I was in high school, I had very few friends. At age 13 I hung out with a group of people who often left me out - I didn’t have a lot of self-esteem in the first place, and this lead me to believe that people at school didn’t want me around. by Matthew Hay Brown House Republicans unveiled a new slogan today to go with their long-anticipated rebranding effort for the 2008 elections. And as several bloggers now have pointed out, it turns out it's already being used - to market an antidepressant. "The Change You Deserve" is a trademark used by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals to promote its serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor Effexor XR. As of today, Republican leaders say, it's also the "mantra" under which they will be unveiling "common sense solutions focused on the issues American families and small businesses care about most." The GOP rollout comes a week after former House Speaker Newt Gingrich warned fellow Republicans to "chart a bold course of real change" or face catastrophe this fall. House Minority Whip Roy Blunt agrees. "I think Newt is absolutely right in the idea that real change requires real change," the Missouri Republican told Wolf Blitzer Sunday on CNN's Late Edition. "We're going to be talking in the next few weeks about the things we want to do to bring to the country." Rep. Chris Van Hollen, also appearing on the program, scoffed at the idea. "The Republican Party has become the party of no, veto and the status quo," said the Maryland Democrat, who chairs his party's House campaign operation. "And now they're going to try to run as a party of change." Use only as directed. ... Source: www.sciencecentric.com --- 12 hours ago

Montreal's transit authority is replacing its paper tickets with a CharlieCard-like system. Chris DeWolfe, a reporter at the Montreal Gazette, is writing a story about the new Opus Card (OK, I really have no clue if it'll feature a penguin): Part of my story will look at how the names of smart cards in other cities have been derived from or have become part of the local pop culture. Naturally, I'm very interested by the CharlieCard. So, what do you think about the T naming its pass after a character in a song protesting the T's predecessor? I told him the song is such a part of local character, the question is almost more how could the T even think of naming it anything else, but what do I know? You can e-mail Chris with your thoughts on the name or post them here. ... Source: www.fwicki.com --- 6 hours ago
