Related Articles Targeting QseC signaling and virulence for Antibiotic development. Science. 2008 Aug 22;321(5892):1078-80 Authors: Rasko DA, Moreira CG, Li de R, Reading NC, Ritchie JM, Waldor MK, Williams N, Taussig R, Wei S, Roth M, Hughes DT, Huntley JF, Fina MW, Falck JR, Sperandio V Many bacterial pathogens rely on a conserved membrane histidine sensor kinase, QseC, to respond to host adrenergic signaling molecules and bacterial signals in order to promote the expression of virulence factors. Using a high-throughput screen, we identified a small molecule, LED209, that inhibits the binding of signals to QseC, preventing its autophosphorylation and consequently inhibiting QseC-mediated activation of virulence gene expression. LED209 is not toxic and does not inhibit pathogen growth; however, this compound markedly inhibits the virulence of several pathogens in vitro and in vivo in animals. Inhibition of signaling offers a strategy for the development of broad-spectrum antimicrobial drugs. PMID: 18719281 [PubMed - indexed for MEDLINE] ... Source: online.wsj.com --- 1 day ago

Some two million people acquire bacterial infections in U.S. hospitals each year, and 90,000 of those patients die as a result. Hospitals are now turning to a new breed of Antibiotic SWAT team to win the war against these "super bugs" -- bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics, says the Wall Street Journal. These efforts, known as antimicrobial stewardship programs, team top pharmacists, infectious-disease specialists and microbiologists together to monitor the use of a hospital's antibiotics and restrict prescriptions of specific drugs when they become less effective at fighting infections. The heightened vigilance comes as the federal Medicare program plans to begin refusing to pay hospitals to treat preventable infections that patients contract while under the facilities' care, says the Journal. Fortunately, hospitals are already producing tangible results, says the Journal: At Hunterdon Medical Center in Flemington, New Jersey, a 2007 test found that 51 percent of cultures of Klebsiella pneumonia -- which causes pneumonia, urinary tract and wound infections -- were susceptible to ciprofloxacin, up from 27 percent a year earlier. At Maine Medical Center in Portland, a trend of rising bacterial resistance was reversed, bacterial susceptibility to certain antibiotics improved by between 20 percent and 47 percent and the hospital has been able to maintain those trends since that time. Studies at the University of Pennsylvania hav ... Source: 03530.com --- 21 hours ago

A recent paper examined if use of the Antibiotic cotrimoxazole was correlated with resistance in three different bacterial pathogens, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae , and Moraxella catarrhalis . To quickly summarize, in one species, S. pneumoniae , resistance was correlated with use, whereas it was not for the other two species. While the study is fine for what it is, it inadvertently highlights a problem most surveillance systems have: Read the rest of this post... | Read the comments on this post... ... Gustav and the current hurricane season in the states are reminders that we all need to plan ahead for our pets in case of an emergency. Later, I'll share footage released today by the Humane Society of the United States showing one of their mega shelters in Louisiana and the animals that are holding out there now. But first, here's Department of Homeland Security advice on what to include in a pet emergency supply kit: Food & Water- Keep at least three days of food and water on hand for each pet. Medicines & Medical Records- Store an extra supply of medicine for your pet in a waterproof container. First Aid Kit- This could be tailored to your pet and its particular needs, but a basic pet first aid kit contains cotton bandage rolls, bandage tape, scissors, Antibiotic ointment, latex gloves, isopropyl alcohol and saline solution. Include a first aid instructional book too. Collar ID & Records- Store medical records, vaccination documents, registration information, adoption papers and other important records in a plastic bag or waterproof container. Pets, especially dogs, should wear a collar with the rabies tag and ID in clear view. Carry a back-up leash, collar and ID tag. Crate/Carrier- Have a safe, comfortable crate or other pet carrier on hand. Important- it should be roomy enough for your pet to stand in, turn around and lie down, since you don't know how long your pet might have to be in there. Sanitation- Don't forget to pack pe ... Students at two Jessamine County schools will carry home letters Thursday, notifying parents about two cases of MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ) infections, a type of staph infection that has become resistant to commonly used Antibiotic treatments. Both cases have been confirmed by physicians, according to the letter sent to parents. The letter, which was written by Superintendent Lu S. Young, was sent "as a precaution and to aid in the prevention of the spread of MRSA." School officials said they learned about the cases late Wednesday, and it was too late to notify students and parents. School officials said one of the cases involved an East Jessamine High School student, and the other involved an East Jessamine Middle School student. One of the students has since returned to class, Assistant Superintendent Owens Saylor said. He did not know which student. ... Source: www.raredis.org --- 19 hours ago
PubMed , the Internet portal of biomedical and life sciences literature, indexed an interesting article, entitled Pharyngitis of infectious mononucleosis: computed tomography findings (Radiat Med. 2008 May;26(4):248-51). Authors are Kutuya N Kurosaki Y Suzuki K et al. , from the Department of Radiology, Juntendo University School of Medicine, 2-1-1 Hongo, Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo, Japan. Two women presented with sore throat and fever. Their symptoms were not alleviated by antibiotics. Cervical computed tomography (CT) with contrast enhancement demonstrated enlargement of predominant posterior cervical lymph nodes and streaky heterogeneous tonsils with interspersed low attenuation. They were diagnosed as having infectious mononucleosis by their laboratory data. Thus, when radiologists encounter these CT findings of pharyngitis that is not alleviated by Antibiotic therapy, infectious mononucleosis should be considered in the differential diagnosis.
