With a scant four days left before the scheduled execution of Troy Anthony Davis, Jimmy Carter & Bob Barr have called on Georgia’s Board of Pardons and Parole to reverse its decision to deny clemency: The Carter Center released a letter Friday urging the state Board of Pardons and Parole to reverse its decision to deny clemency. The letter said flaws in Davis’ conviction and appeals warrant a closer look. Barr wrote the board Wednesday saying he is “a strong believer in the death penalty as an appropriate and just punishment” but said the proper level of fairness and accuracy required for the ultimate punishment has not been met in Davis’ case. Meanwhile, AlterNet headlines, Anatomy of a Frame-up: The Shocking Case of Troy Davis . AMHERST, Mass. – I took a trip to UMass yesterday afternoon, caught practice and then took in the Celtics exhibition opener against the Philadelphia 76ers. If Sean Carter was eligible this season, UMass would have a legitimate chance at contending for the A-10 title. However, the Oregon State transfer will sit out and have three years left. That means the Minutemen, as they did a year ago under former coach Travis Ford, will rely on perimeter players. Chris Lowe is a senior who has run the team for the better part of his first three years in Amherst. Ricky Harris had a break-through season last year, averaging 18.2 points per game. Anthony Gurley, a local kid who transferred in from Wake Forest, should slide into the role vacated by last year’s leading scorer, Gary Forbes (19.4), who also averaged 7.5 boards per game. ``We’re going to have to fill that,” Harris said. ``We’re all going to have to rebound better.” That’s not going to be easy with three guards that probably stand 6-3 (Gurley), 6-1 (Harris) and 6-foot (Lowe.). Tony Gaffney, a role guy a year ago, has already impressed new coach Derek Kellogg with his length and athleticism. Look for him to start along with the three guards. Now the question is who will step up in the middle. The candidates are Luke Bonner, a senior who averaged 3.5 points and 2.5 rebounds last season, and Tyrell Lynch, a 6-foot-9 freshman who needs to get into better shape. ``Luke’s got to give us mo ...

News sites should have a designated "wacky news" section, that I and others can go to when we want non-serious stories. And then keep the ridiculous out of the regular news. For example, and I see this all the time, in this article there's this paragraph: Rep. Anthony Weiner said President Bush's "idea of an energy policy is holding hands with the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, embracing him with a big smooch." Dear journalists <choke>, you don't need to include every far-out crazy thing that is said during some event. These are meant as throw-away lines by the crazies who utter them, anyways -- they don't really, actually mean that they think that, they're just frustrated and voicing that by being ridiculous. That frustration is felt is relevant to the story, but the absurd words themselves are not. They're not the point. Stop propagating insanity, it's not cute. Every time Jimmy Carter or Nelson Mandela or Pat Robertson et al. says something stupid is not a reason to go and quote it in print. Unless your aspirations for your medium include it being seen as a major crap conduit. We have pipelines that take crap away from our homes, to the sewers, and then we have you guys and the sewers that are your organizations, who pipe it *to* our homes. Thanks but no thanks, I already have enough crap to put up with in my life. Just keep the serious news serious. Really, that article was passable excepting for that unnecessary paragraph, that jus ...

The Charlotte City Council agreed Monday to increase the NASCAR Hall of Fame budget by $32 million to boost exhibits and pay for unexpected building costs. The 9-2 decision came after council members chastised city staff and other hall planners for not telling them sooner about the price hike. Council members complained of early, “lowball” estimates of the exhibit costs. They asked how the extra money would help attendance. And they said they felt trapped. “It would be helpful if we had a heads-up earlier than we did this time,” said Mayor Pro Tem Susan Burgess. But in the end Burgess voted for the increase, saying the hall should be “whiz-bang on day one.” She also pointed out that paying for it will not affect property taxes. She was joined by council members Warren Cooksey, Andy Dulin, Nancy Carter, Warren Turner, John Lassiter, Edwin Peacock and Anthony Foxx. Council members Patsy Kinsey and Michael Barnes opposed the increase. Kinsey said she could not support it while residents are worrying so much about the economy. “I just in good conscience can't vote for $32 million,” she said. The vote brings the project's total cost to $195 million – all of it paid for by a mix of hospitality taxes and money from land sales. Most of the project's funding comes from a hotel room tax that can not be used for anything else. Of the additional money, $17 million will be used to improve the range of exhibits in the building, which is schedu ...

Just saw the list of inactive players, and there are some interesting names.  Bruce Davis and Tony Hills are no surprise, and a bit less surprising, but still disappointing, is that Limas Sweed is also on the list.  3 of our top 4 picks aren't even good enough to be active on game day...not a good start for this year's draft class. The biggest surprise, however, is that Anthony Smith is also inactive today.  Guess that means we would use either Carter or Townsend to back up Clark.  Think Tomlin is sending Smith a message after his over-aggressiveness during training camp?  Could this mean that Smith's days in Pittsburgh are numbered?  (I don't think we would get rid of him during the season, but maybe after?) ...

An Ardmore man who last month told Carter County deputies he used a number of high tech items and OU memorabilia stolen from a Springer business as gifts for his wife’s birthday is now facing charges in connection with three more area burglaries. Undersheriff Milton Anthony said Deputies Matt Dunn and Gary Williamson have presented reports to the district attorney’s office that allegedly link Larry Staggs to the burglary of a rural Dickson residence and thefts at a Dickson business and a Prairie Valley Road firm. “We have recovered some, but not all, of the items stolen from all of the burglaries,” Anthony said Wednesday afternoon. Anthony commended Dunn and Williamson for an “exceptional” job in the ongoing investigation, adding, “It is possible there could be even more pending charges by the time this investigation is completed.” Deputies arrested Staggs Aug. 15 when a search of his Davis Street residence yielded property stolen a month earlier from VE Enterprises. Recovered in the search was a large screen computer monitor, two computers, a camera and an autographed OU football. Staggs, who was a former employee at the Springer firm, told deputies at the time he used the stolen property as presents for his wife’s birthday and gifts for other family members. He was formally charged with possession of stolen property as a result of that arrest. Since his arrest and the filing of charges in connection with the Springer burglary, Staggs ...

The Carter County Sheriff’s Department defused a potential tragedy peacefully at a Sandy Creek Road residence Monday morning. Sheriff Ken Grace said Undersheriff Milton Anthony, Capt. Gregg Johnson and Deputy James Van Zant responded to the residence in rural Ardmore after dispatchers received a 10:30 a.m. call reporting an armed man barricaded inside a mobile home. “The suspect and his wife had been involved in a domestic disturbance. The suspect, who had a pistol, fired one shot into the floor of the house and threatened to take his own life,” Grace said. “His wife managed to get out of the house and run to a (nearby) store and call us.” Grace said the woman was not injured in the initial altercation with her husband. Early efforts to “talk” the suspect out of the house were unsuccessful. Grace said the Carter County Emergency Response Team was activated, but was not used. “The suspect ran out a back door and into the woods. Capt. Johnson was able to talk him out. He came out on his own and the tact team was put on stand-down status,” Grace said. No injuries were reported. “He admitted he needed help and voluntarily agreed to seek treatment. He was transported to a facility by deputies,” Grace said. “This was one of those situations where we were able to resolve a situation that could have been tragic without injury to anyone and turn it into something positive. It was a win-win situation.” Marsha Miller 221-6529 marsha.miller@ardmor ...
