Of all the cosmopolitan locales for an art scandal to occur, one would've thought of Prague or Berlin, maybe even Washington, D.C. before arriving to Denver. And yet, the city's own Denver Art Museum has came under fire by the American Association of Museum Directors for a suspect dealing with a local billionaire. The deal entails the museum yielding a half interest of a Charles Deas painting in its collection to said billionaire Philip Anschutz. The trade-off was Anschutz's purchase of the similarly majestic "Cowboy Singing" by Thomas Eakins, and ceding a half-share of that piece to the museum. ... Source: www.boxxet.com --- 13 days ago

The consolidation sweeping Hollywood smaller movie operations continues ... Fox Walden, the 2-year-old marketing partnership between 20th Century Fox and billionaire Phil Anschutz's Walden Media, is downsizing after a string of disappointing releases, including "The Seeker," "Mr. Magorium's Emporium" and "Nim's Island." As many as 12 people will lose their jobs as a result of the belt-tightening, according to a person close to the company. Fox and Walden decided that it wasn't cost effective to operate a separate marketing unit for their joint-venture films. About three Fox Walden employees will be absorbed into Walden. Jeffrey Godsick, who is head of the unit, will rejoin Fox as executive vice president of marketing and digital content and continue to oversee Fox Walden, which will now handle fewer releases a year than orginally planned. --Claudia Eller ... Travis County, Texas, Judge Charlie Baird orders a woman who neglected to protect her daughter from an abusive father, or get her appropriate medical care after the beating, to bear no more children. (The dad's in jail, the daughter's in foster care.) From the Austin-American Statesman report : Baird said Texas law gives judges the discretion to set any conditions of probation deemed reasonable. He also said that neither Salazar nor her lawyer, Kent Anschutz, objected. "When you look her background, the circumstances of this case," he said, "a reasonable condition of her probation was that she not conceive or bear any children." Anschutz said he is considering his options on behalf of Salazar. He described her as concerned about Baird's order. "Although I fully understand the sentiment and perspective of the judge in this matter, I question the enforceability of that particular condition," he said. I swear to heck I remember reporting a similar story for reason 's "Citings" section back in the 20th century about a wicked man ordered to father no more children, but I can't seem to find it. And the story says all the lawyers the reporter talked to "say they are not familiar with any similar orders." Tip thanks to faithful reader Marissa Stewart. ...
