La Anorexia es un trastorno alimentario que representa una pérdida de peso provocada por la persona enferma y lleva a un estado de inanición. La Anorexia se caracteriza por el temor a aumentar de peso, y por una percepción distorsionada y delirante del propio cuerpo que hace que el enfermo se vea gordo aun cuando su peso se encuentra por debajo de lo recomendado. Por ello inicia una disminución progresiva del peso mediante ayunos y la reducción de la ingesta de alimentos, según comentó la Dra. María Fernanda Dillón, médico psiquiatra. A estas medidas drásticas se le pueden sumar otras conductas asociadas como la utilización de diuréticos, laxantes, purgas, vómitos provocados o exceso de ejercicio físico. La Dra. Dillón comentó que hay muchos factores socioculturales que pueden desencadenar la Anorexia y que uno de ellos –según lo comentan las chicas en consulta- es la presión que ejercen ciertas madres que limitan el consumo de comida a sus hijas, por estar muy interesadas en la figura. Los principales síntomas que determinan la aparición de la enfermedad son los siguientes: Rechazo a mantener el peso corporal por encima del mínimo adecuado para la edad y talla del enfermo. Miedo al aumento de peso o a la obesidad incluso cuando el peso se encuentra por debajo de lo recomendable. Percepción distorsionada del cuerpo, su peso y proporciones.
