Livonia city officials and Annexation supporters staged a fund-raiser and gathering Thursday in support of the ballot proposal for the Aug. 5 primary election. They also distributed signs calling for a yes vote on the Annexation of the 414 acres of the former Northville State Psychiatric Hospital, touting an estimated 8,000 jobs the development would create. Mayor Jack Kirksey, State Rep. John Pastor, council members Terry Godfroid-Marecki, James McCann, Brian Meakin and Tom Robinson, and Treasurer Dennis Wright met with supporters at Greenmead to bring people together and "get the facts out to the public" on the Annexation. The new campaign signs tout 8,000 jobs that will be brought to the region with the new development. Kirksey said that number was derived from a market study by the developer REIS. The study was based on a mix of properties at the site, including a four- or five-story medical building, four or five restaurants and some retail businesses. "This will be a nice mix," Kirksey said. McCann echoed Kirksey on how important the development was to the region. "It's for our children's future and our future," McCann said. Godfroid-Marecki said: "There's been so much confusion and so much emotion, just talking to people one on one, you'd be amazed at how many minds are changed, As elected officials, we have to do what is best for this city." ...

Livonia Mayor Jack Kirksey has certainly gone above and beyond in his support of the Annexation of the former Northville Psychiatric Hospital property to his community. He has written in support of it. Last week he called a press conference to refute what he called a misleading propaganda piece. In that conference, he said the city would investigate whether election or postal laws were broken. It’s a bit of a turnaround for him, since he initially declared he would stay out of the issue, hoping it would be resolved without going on the ballot. When I talked to him about it on Wednesday, he said he supported it now because he thought it was the best thing for the City of Livonia. He said he didn’t see a downside for Livonia residents. Well, I do. I see a downside for people in Livonia, Northville, Plymouth, Canton—wherever people look with suspicion at government and cynicism at the way it operates, where people question the connection between political contributions and legislative efforts, where people are scornful of the good old boy network and pessimistic about the prospect of good government. I suppose I am now among their rank. First, lets look at the things that Kirksey has said about the issue. He’s said it won’t cost Livonia taxpayers anything. He’s said it won’t impact their services. He’s said it will ultimately bring in millions in tax revenue to the city, and additional jobs. He’s also said that he hasn’t sat down an ...

To the editor, Has Michigan become so economically and ethically bankrupt that the residents of Livonia might actually take their mayor’s lead and vote in favor of the Annexation of the Northville Township property? I guess we’ll find out Aug. 5. I find it incredible to believe that the good people of Livonia would use the misfortune of their neighbor, Northville Township, as an opportunity to line their own pockets. This may be a case of be careful what you wish for. The Northville Psychiatric Hospital property was owned by the State of Michigan. As state property, Northville was not given one thin dime of tax support from this 400-acre parcel. The state left it a mess (don’t forget – we the people are the state); filled with toxic and hazardous waste, empty rotting buildings and dangerous tunnels. Northville Township has had the burden of policing this property for years, with no remuneration; they have had their approved planning and zoning ordinances defied, and now are facing the very real threat of having these 400 acres removed from their jurisdiction and the sovereignty of their municipality overthrown by this archaic Annexation law, and have no vote to protect themselves. Does anyone have a carton of tea available? Let’s not forget about the $100 million lawsuit they are facing as well. Does Livonia want a developer that when denied variances from the planning and zoning laws of Northville seeks to punish them by forcibl ...
