If North Carolina is going to catch Virginia Tech in the Coastal Division, the Tar Heels are going to have to do it without Brandon Tate. The senior playmaker will miss the rest of the season with a torn ACL in his right knee, UNC announced Monday. "This is certainly tough for our football team," UNC coach Butch Davis said. "It's tough on him, he's such a great kid, and valuable, integral part of this football team. "We don't have another Brandon Tate to pull off the shelf and plug in the game." Tate injured his knee when he was tackled on a punt return in the first quarter of UNC's 29-24 win over Notre Dame on Saturday. Mike Anello's tackle, a head-on collision with Tate's right knee, tore the ACL and MCL in Tate's knee, according to statement released by UNC. Tate led the ACC, and ranked third in the NCAA, in all-purpose yardage (163.7 yards per game) heading into Saturday's game. He finishes the season with 376 receiving yards, 305 kickoff return yards, 158 punt return yards, 143 rushing yards and five total touchdowns. For his career, Tate is the NCAA's all-time leader in combined kick return yards with 3,523. This is the second major loss to Injury for the 18th-ranked Tar Heels. Quarterback T.J. Chris Payne knew he was seriously injured when his leg began to roll under him. The Columbia High senior was running down the sideline in the Capitals’ Sept. 16 game against Brookland-Cayce when he broke his Ankle while being pushed out of bounds. “I knew it wasn’t a sprained Ankle right away,” he said. Payne, a linebacker who was playing running back to fill in for an injured teammate, had plenty of experience with sprained ankles in his junior year. Immediately he knew this was different. He had played on a sprained Ankle several times. This time, he could not move his Ankle at all. “I knew my season was over. I thought my scholarship was gone,” said Payne, who committed to play at USC early this year. His commitment helped friend and teammate Damario Jeffery decide to attend South Carolina as well. Golden State Warriors president Robert Rowell laid the smackdown on Ellis Saturday after the star guard lied about an Ankle Injury sustained in an offseason moped accident. Ellis, who signed a six-year, $66 million dollar deal with the Warriors in July, severely sprained the Ankle during a crash in late August. The biggest personnel news emanating from Tyrone Willingham's press luncheon today is that guard Casey Bulyca will have knee surgery in the next week or two and could be done for the season. Willingham said Bulyca had been struggling with a knee problem for a while and it was finally decided he should have surgery. He said Bulyca could return this year but also left open the possibility that he is done for the year. Ryan Tolar , a starter at guard last year, will return to the starting lineup to play guard alongside Jordan White-Frisbee. Willingham said the No. 3 guard behind those two is uncertain but one option is Matt Sedillo , who has been getting reps at both center and guard.
