Strange doings regularly take place out in the chicken coop in our barnyard, but none have been more instructive than this year. It all began when we received a call and a new batch of rescue chickens. Somebody has to do it or the world will be the poorer. That’s what gets Pam and Alex Campbell out of bed every morning of the year regardless of the weather or personal hardship. Somebody has to breed and care for the rare Farm animals that the couple do on Gilmerton Farm because if no one else does, the animals will die out altogether. For about eight years now, the Campbells have raised rare Suffolk Punch horses, pygmy goats, sheep, and a variety of chicken that isn’t bred very much in this era of mass-produced food. For instance, Pam said large herds of Merino sheep are bred just for their wool; other varieties are bred for meat. But at Gilmerton Farm, the small sheep are good for milk and the Chevre cheese that she makes, and for shearing, but on a limited scale. And, most important, so that the species will continue. “We are preserving this breed because very few others do and we want to keep the gene lines alive,” she said as she walked around her 37-acre Farm in rubber boots and shorts. A Suffolk Punch foal was born in her barn five weeks ago. The mare and grandmother horse are on the Farm too, which is how the Campbells prefer it. They spend time touching and petting the horses so they are accustomed to humans. The young horse is named Molly. “She dropped into my arms, which is what I wanted,” said Pam. “Her mother, Maggie, started labor at 9:30 p.m. and Molly arrived at 10:15.” Molly stood up by 11 p.m. Pam said she slep ...
