A Norte Vista High School teacher was charged with mistreating animals at the school's Future Farmers of America program. Tracy Michele Putnam pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Superior Court to three felony counts of Animal Cruelty, Riverside County district attorney's spokesman Michael Jeandron said Wednesday. According to the county's Animal Services department, officials responded to complaints about an injured lamb in May 2006, a steer in September 2006 and a sick goat in January 2007. The agency alleges Putnam instructed a student teacher to euthanize a lamb in a cruel manner. Putnam could not be immediately located for comment. Craig Wells, assistant superintendent of personnel services for the Alvord Unified School District, said Putnam was out of town at a conference for agricultural teachers. Wells said Putnam is in good standing and the district has full confidence in her. The district investigated when the allegations were first made and found them to be unwarranted, Wells said. Putnam is fully trained in the requirements of her assignment and has bachelor's and master's degrees, he said. She has worked for the district since July 1, 2004, and worked elsewhere in the same field for 10 years prior to that, he said. "We think she is doing a good job," Wells said. ...
